1300 mile road-trip in a 1970 Rolls Royce, what could possibly go wrong? Let the breakdowns begin..

By Harry's garage

Summary

## Key takeaways - **Silver Shadow aced Arctic trip**: I just couldn't believe how good it was on that trip to the Arctic Circle in 2018 with northern lights, amount of snow, Beast from the East, crazy temperatures, snowstorms, really cold up there, minus 25 perhaps lower, with wind chill seriously cold. [00:37], [00:52] - **Pre-trip fixes: starter, belts, joints**: Changed original starter motor for high torque Japanese one because it didn't spin the engine, replaced all belts, engine mount, suspension joints on back axle, steering joint, coolant pipe to gearbox. [02:28], [03:26] - **Wiper park switch fails in rain**: Wipers won't turn off due to broken micro switch for park position; had to pull fuse, now rely on Rain-X, but it struggles in heavy sticky snow. [12:28], [13:26] - **Wheel bearing fails dramatically**: Front wheel bearing failed with almighty nasty noise near Loire Valley; tire place confirmed casing breaking up, but heavy engineering held for 177 miles to ferry at gentle speeds. [41:48], [43:37] - **13.6 MPG average, burns 5L oil**: 1300 miles averaged 14.6 MPG overall, dropping to 13.76 in hills; consumed nearly 5L oil despite big capacity, no blue smoke but constant dipstick checks needed. [26:41], [47:11] - **Unmatched comfort, rebuild planned**: Seats are sprung armchairs, ride quality out of this world with Bilstein shocks, comfiest on long journey; plans engine rebuild costing £8k to fix oil burn versus £3k donor. Well, welcome to a new Harry's Garage video. And this video, we're off on a

video. And this video, we're off on a road trip. And we're taking the

road trip. And we're taking the Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow. And I haven't taken the Shadow out on a road trip since doing that crazy trip to the

Arctic Circle. That was 2018. And this

Arctic Circle. That was 2018. And this

car arrived in November 2017. So I have owned it for 8 years. And that trip to the Arctic Circle just bonded me with

this car. I the I just couldn't believe

this car. I the I just couldn't believe how good it was on that trip. I couldn't

believe Norway northern lights the amount of snow and how cold it was. It

was actually beast from the east. If

you're in UK, that was the time we were in Norway. So, we had those crazy

in Norway. So, we had those crazy temperatures over there, those snowstorms. Really cold up there. Minus

25, perhaps a little bit lower. But god,

I couldn't believe it with the wind chill. Seriously cold as far as I was

chill. Seriously cold as far as I was concerned. But this trip is not going to

concerned. But this trip is not going to be up to Norway. We're just going to France in it. I say just into France. We

did in the project 8, we did something called the Bojlet run because Bole Nuvo is a thing in France which is the release of the first wines of 2025 and

there's this rush to get it into shops and it's a special type of wine that matures earlier and while growing up my

birthday is this week as well and all the time you know as an adult ble if I was going out on my birthday it tended to be around. So, it's just a personal

thing. I just enjoy the release of the

thing. I just enjoy the release of the wines and the party spirit that gets going. It sort of kicks off Christmas

going. It sort of kicks off Christmas almost with that. So, that's where we're going in this car. And because I hadn't really done much with it in 2021, we

redid the body work on it. We replaced

some of the metal things. And since

then, I've just done local runs with it, but I thought it deserved something a bit more. This is going to be about

bit more. This is going to be about a,000 miles in all. And I've had a full service done on it with with a local Rolls-Royce specialist DW and they know

this car well and they've gone right through it. Obviously service oil change

through it. Obviously service oil change and that sort of things, but a few other little tweaks. So if you Yeah, you'll

little tweaks. So if you Yeah, you'll see there's a starter motor down there.

This I think it probably could even be the original starter motor. We ended up changing it for one of these modern sort of high torque Japanese starter motors because you'd go to start it and it then

it's a very common thing with older cars. It doesn't cut into the

cars. It doesn't cut into the flywheeling the starter motor goes but it doesn't actually spin the engine. And

it's fine when you're in the but if you're going on a road trip I thought it was about time to change that. And there

was just a a few other things we did. Um

let's have a little look what we got in this box. Yeah, we changed all the

this box. Yeah, we changed all the belts.

There was an engine mount that looks have got a bit of oil on it. Um there

was some suspension sort of joints and the back axle. You can sort of see their sort of part in a bit past their best.

Uh what else? Um a steering joint there was. Yeah, that also about time we

was. Yeah, that also about time we changed that. So we put a new one of

changed that. So we put a new one of those on. It won't ever have precise

those on. It won't ever have precise steering on it. What else? Pipe. I

didn't realize this is a coolant pipe going to the gearbox and the gearbox has a coolant on it. You can see Yeah, that's that is about time we change that

pipe as well. So, sort of minor stuff really, but I feel very much happier that's all done. You also have to grease up all the joints on it. Has UJ joints

on this earlier version. Um, so that's all being done as well. And then, yeah, we're heading off in the morning. One

thing I must do actually, and I'm going to do it while I remember. Obviously, if

you're in France in a right-hand drive car, it is very useful to have the tag for the motorway. And I always, well,

no, I always I have left it behind in the last car we took to France. But

basically, you have this little tag here, and it just means when you get to the barriers in France, you can just go for the alter thing. this bleeps at you and you're on go. You don't have to pick

a ticket up. You don't and it all gets charged to your credit card. They're

just so convenient to have one of these tags in France. It just makes it so much simpler. Um yes, the one thing I've

simpler. Um yes, the one thing I've noticed since setting this uh week aside to do this trip, the weather is changing

and we have a blast from the north and really cold temperatures coming. I think

it's sort of minus 2 in the morning, minus 3. I see where we're going and

minus 3. I see where we're going and there's a possibility of snow and I just can't believe it. This poor car, every time I take it out, it's in snow and cold weather. The good thing is I have

cold weather. The good thing is I have still got the winter tires on from the Arctic trip. So, we have at least have

Arctic trip. So, we have at least have those on. They're probably slightly past

those on. They're probably slightly past their best because yeah, that was some time ago, but um yeah, next time you see us, we hopefully we'll be in France.

Well, morning. We're in France and we stayed at this hotel last night, Shattered Deassi, and really nice place to stay. And it has this vista over this

to stay. And it has this vista over this is the champagne region of France.

There's the rooms in the distance. All

the vineyards. Every window you look out of at this hotel, you see these vines in the epicenter of Champagne. Yeah, it was a good trip down. Got the toora tunnel

in good time and they actually put us on a earlier crossing. So that was good. So

we we gained time there. France, the

weather was a bit like this, a bit gray, wet at times. And we made our way down here. Uh about 400 miles I think we've

here. Uh about 400 miles I think we've done. And we stopped. You can't help but

done. And we stopped. You can't help but come to this region and not stop by the old pits at the circus of re. We did

that and we actually got papped while we were there. There was a car spot 51 I

were there. There was a car spot 51 I think it is. I'll just flash it up. He

did some lovely photographs of the silver shadow outside the pits. So it's

something you have to do. This is that's about 5 minutes away from this hotel.

But uh I would recommend this place.

Really good meal last night. Um and

reasonable. I think it was €39 a sort of set menu. Really nice breakfast this

set menu. Really nice breakfast this morning and then we're headed out of here. So what we're going to do is it's

here. So what we're going to do is it's just a stop we're going to do. We're

going to shatter Devour we're going to next just to pick some supplies up for Christmas and then down to where the BJ Nuvo party is tonight. But we're just

trying we're going to go head out of here just down Epan that way just to have some of the better roads before we have to hit the auto route. But, um, all is good. I checked the oil this morning

is good. I checked the oil this morning cuz it does drink oil and it does seem to be down on the dipstick, but it's it was at quite an angle when I checked it.

So, I'm going to just let it warm up and then just check the oil again. But,

yeah, there we are. We better head out.

Comes with a wonderful handbook. the

Rolls-Royce.

And in here, there is actually a way of checking the oil on the instruments.

Turn the ignition on. And there is this check button here that lights up all the lights to check they're working. And

that should give an oil level there. You

can see min oil. It's saying it's full.

Min oil is down here. I'm suspicious of this cuz it just seems to be over that way. So, I'm actually going to check it

way. So, I'm actually going to check it manually, but let's have a little look what we're doing. Oh, it's not bad, actually. It's not bad. I keep a cloth

actually. It's not bad. I keep a cloth in the car for such occasions.

And you can see there, yeah, it's in between min and max. Oh, that's good.

Right, we're in a bit of a rush at the moment, so I won't put any more oil in.

That's good. Yeah, just joined the auto route. We did a little bit down to Epan,

route. We did a little bit down to Epan, but the weather wasn't great. Uh, now

we're charging on. Unfortunately, we're

on a very tight schedule today. I've got

to leave Shatter Devil by 12:00 and we've got an arrival time of 11:50. So,

we only got about 10 minutes there because we got to get down to where where the party is, the Bolay party.

We're meant we're meeting by contact down there at 3:00. So, all a bit tight.

If I take it above 80, if I actually try and do 130 km an hour, there's an increase in wind noise on this door and it's a bit annoying. So, it's good. It's

my speed limiter is my door seal just pulling out cuz I think we've got a strong crosswind. You can just about

strong crosswind. You can just about pick up on it. We're doing 80 now. You

don't know. You don't hear the engine.

was just a sort of gearbox wine or something and that wind noise there.

Anyway, we've got an hour of this. I

know we're a bit in the shadow.

Always an experience there. It seems to have a sort of tasting or something about to happen. But uh yeah, it's 100%

pon noir this champagne down here cuz it's grown on limestone.

And I don't know, some champagnes don't agree with me, but this one very definitely agrees with me. It's a bit wet. I'm going to dive in cuz I bought

wet. I'm going to dive in cuz I bought another case. Thank you so much. Thank

another case. Thank you so much. Thank

you so much. All right. See you again, I'm sure.

>> Bye.

Ah, dear me. The weather has not been kind. It's been very British.

kind. It's been very British.

There we go.

We're definitely not run out of space with this car. Right. Head on down.

Furry. Next is our next rendevous.

And it's auto route most of the way.

Well, that was fun. Shame the weather is really not on our side. It is raining quite hard outside and I've put our destination into ways and yeah, we're

not arriving till well4 3 and we're meant to be there at 3:00. So we're

going to have to crack on. 184 miles to go. It's quite fun this road just out of

go. It's quite fun this road just out of Bardisen where we just were. Chatau

Devul just picked that champagne up. But

yeah, twists and turns. Goes up the hill and then it's A5 south of Mac.

Yeah, there's no escape I'm afraid cuz the schedule is so tight today. These

bends are really quite fun. When I come out of here in the McLaren or the Tessterosa, the Rolls-Royce, you have this enormous wheel and it's just a joke

why they fitted such a big wheel cuz it's got incredible power steering. It's

completely effortless and you normally put a big wheel on for the to to make the steering easier when you haven't got power steering. This has incredible

power steering. This has incredible amount of power steering and it's still got a big wheel, but it makes for very relaxed progress on the way. It's just effortless. Yeah.

We got a slight issue with the wipers and we just pulled up to refuel and they wouldn't turn off and I thought like they're in the off position now and

they'll go um first and second speed.

That's all good, but they won't turn off. And it was been heavy rain. I've

off. And it was been heavy rain. I've

just checked with the guys who look after the car, Danny, and we think there's a bracket broken that it's weird

wipers, but when you turn it off, you cut the power, but there's another little bit of power that goes to them down a separate wire to reverse them to

park them. And there's a switch that

park them. And there's a switch that puts that into action, and it's and it's not happening. So they're just not

not happening. So they're just not turning off. So what we've had to do is

turning off. So what we've had to do is take a fuse out and now they stopped in a slightly strange position. Not in

fully parked. It's lovely and dry at the moment. But if I actually look at the

moment. But if I actually look at the radar and see what rain we have, you can see that's the dot. That is us. There is

the rain. And the rain is coming here.

So, I've So, I've got a horrible feeling this nice dry spell we've got at the moment is going to come to an end and I go have to put there's a peculiar fuse.

There you go. That's the fuse. Let's see

if that will I don't think it's No, it's not going to see it. But it has fuse wire on. It's typical Rolls-Royce. Just

wire on. It's typical Rolls-Royce. Just

means you can rewire should it blow.

What a ball.

Flurry. That's where we're heading.

Anything coming? Isn't it good? We're

very close though.

It just dominates the scenery around here. These vines absolutely everywhere.

here. These vines absolutely everywhere.

Sort of burgundy region feels the wrong sort of car to rush,

but uh doing our best. L at least it rides beautifully.

We go up here cornering shot bank corners. I can put it into lockout top actually for this

1.9 miles.

Taken 3 minutes off our arrival time.

There it is.

There's the church. I can see it. SP it

over there.

I get to see it as you go around this corner. You can see the church in the

corner. You can see the church in the distance there. That is the church we're

distance there. That is the church we're heading for.

We break all the rules as crossing the road.

Well, morning. We're at the next hotel now, Hotel Villa Alexandra. And we did quite a lot of miles yesterday. I think

the last time you saw us, we were racing up to Flurry. We're quite late where we're meeting Mike Stevens from private sellers and then going on to Laurens

Seavoy where the wine maker we've met about four years ago. We brought the Jagra Project 8 up here cuz it was Bojlet Nouvo release last night. Big

party few miles about 10 minutes from here. We didn't actually go because it

here. We didn't actually go because it was raining last night and I've got this issue with the wipers and I didn't really want to have that dilemma at driving at night. But um yeah, if I open

the boot. Yeah, there's all the wine.

the boot. Yeah, there's all the wine.

I've checked how much you can take back to the UK now. And I hope I'm right, but on the government website it says uh

still wine you can bring back 18 lers or in wine speak 24 bottles and sparkling wine 14 wine 9 liters or 12 bottles. So

that is what we've got in the back of here. got the the champagne and then

here. got the the champagne and then this is from well where we're doing a tasting last night, Lawrence of ours and I just love going to that smaller

producer. Um we we went there last time.

producer. Um we we went there last time.

It's just I'm staggered how he runs the business and is so passionate about wines and nine hectares I think he grows.

I was going through the numbers. I think

in normal harvest is about 50,000 lers of wine he gets to sell each year. 2025

all sorts of weather issues and I think production is down to about 35,000 liters as I understood him and yeah they had the red wine I love from him flurry

crew and that production of that is half what it was in a normal year and he had a hail storm come over he was saying it just wiped out a lot of the grapes in

the region so it's a good vintage apparently but there's less of it so anyway that is the wine. I'm going to redistribute all that in a moment, but let's have a look at a map to see what

we've done. We're about 730 mi from

we've done. We're about 730 mi from home. So, Cali Vu is there. That's where

home. So, Cali Vu is there. That's where

the party was last night. We're just in a This hotel is just about here. So,

quite a long way from home. This is the wiper motor here. And I now understand wipers better than I did before. So,

there's this supplementary power going to the wipers. And that is what's broken. The little micro switch is

broken. The little micro switch is saying, "No, I'm not parked. You better

carry on and and get in the park position." And it and it's basically

position." And it and it's basically snapped off. And I'm just working out if

snapped off. And I'm just working out if there's a way I can cut the feed to this sort of reserve power supply that goes

to the wiper motor when you turn it off cuz then I could park it the wipers just using the switch. So he's coming, Danny's coming back to me. See if I got to do that. But I think it means taking this apart. I've got to take the plastic

this apart. I've got to take the plastic cover off here and then this metal plate as well and everything will be exposed and I'm really not sure if I want to do

that or not. Whether I just survive with rain necks and keep sort of cleaning the windscreen. I don't know. To be

windscreen. I don't know. To be

continued. But I also need to put some oil in this cuz this this car does burn a bit of oil. Yeah, you can see we're just below minimum now. Has a big oil capacity. So, I'm not panic. I should

capacity. So, I'm not panic. I should

have put some in yesterday, but um it's not a disaster. That's 700 and something in 720 mi. So, it does burn a bit of oil, which I know about. And I have this

dilemma. Do I rebuild the engine to

dilemma. Do I rebuild the engine to reduce the oil consumption, right? Let's

have a little go at this. I did this little conversion with a little water bottle for my Porsche 930, I think, out in Spain. Just makes life a little bit

in Spain. Just makes life a little bit easier. But a very kind gentleman has

easier. But a very kind gentleman has sent me a 3D printed special um funnel for the Porsche 930, which I'm extremely grateful. I haven't had a chance to show

grateful. I haven't had a chance to show it on camera, but I will. But yeah, here we go. It does make life a lot easier

we go. It does make life a lot easier when you got a full can. This This car likes 2050 oil ideally. I've got 1540,

which is about as close as I can get.

And yeah, I think it's at least 2 L going into here. This is 4 L.

But it's funny, you don't notice any blue smoke with this car. It doesn't You don't know it's burning oil. You just

You keep having to check the dipstick.

Just check where it is. Now, where we got there? I've already put I've put a

got there? I've already put I've put a bit more in than I thought. Actually,

two two and a bit liter gone in there.

Right, let's have a go. We've waited 5 minutes. Let's just see what this looks

minutes. Let's just see what this looks like.

[sighs] Does seem to be taking a while. Well, on

that side, I'm just on right side of Matt. That side gives a confusing

Matt. That side gives a confusing picture. It's It's odd. I've looked in

picture. It's It's odd. I've looked in the hammer. It does take a while to

the hammer. It does take a while to drain through, but I know I've added 2 and 12 lers, so I think that's good. So,

I think we'll run it with that and then check it once the engine has got hot and then sat for 5 minutes. Right, let's

quickly put that. I love this sort of layout in here. It's such a peculiar engine. It's all on show. Put new belts

engine. It's all on show. Put new belts on. Every now and then I hear the power

on. Every now and then I hear the power steering squeaks. I might have to

steering squeaks. I might have to tighten those up or something. But yeah,

not the prettiest of engine compartments, but uh works very well.

Right. And it's just starting to little flakes of snow coming down, which is a bit too exciting. Anyway, going to pack this up and then we're going to head into town to where the party was last

night and just see what's going on.

We just had some cheese and some bojlet nuvo down in a sort of dungeon over there. And then yeah, we got a fun thing

there. And then yeah, we got a fun thing we're going to do in a few minutes time.

But I just want to I just want to check the oil [clears throat] while this has been sat for an hour and see what the level is.

Right.

Where are we? Yeah, there we are. That's

all right. Just under max. I could add a bit more actually, but uh that's good. I like that. So

yeah. Anything else to look at? I can

just see a sort of stain on the rad there. Don't know if you can see that.

there. Don't know if you can see that.

If I just grab it, just a bit suspicious. If you look at the rad

suspicious. If you look at the rad that show up, there's a sort of tent.

Yeah, that slightly darker stain and whether that's a water leak. I'm just

going to check the water on it, which you take this cap off, but it has a funny thing you need to be able to get that off. Yeah, you put this thing in

that off. Yeah, you put this thing in here. I think the the theory is it means

here. I think the the theory is it means you can tighten the radiator, this header tank tighter for whatever reason. You do that and Oh.

Oh, that's all right. There's nothing

wrong with that at all. If I just grab that. There you go. There's the water

that. There you go. There's the water level right at the top. So, that's good.

So, I don't know. I don't know why I've got a stain there. Shouldn't really be doing this in a car park and everybody's celebrating boiler nuvo, but there we

are. Right,

are. Right, that's that.

Okay, and what we're doing next are these guys. There's two duchch here.

And I've just paid €5 to go in a dur.

And I don't know quite where we go around here. Beiju, but I used to own

around here. Beiju, but I used to own one of these. God, how old was it? I was

18, I think. And I had a really early scruffy one about it was a 1959 or 1960.

So, it had the doors that went that way.

And I had a red posher one after that.

But [snorts] I haven't been in the Durville for decades. And for €5, I'm going to have a go in one.

Why you modify you have this?

>> Yes.

>> Yes.

>> Oh, just do a little bit.

>> Yeah. I have to show the little speedo.

This is This is So for 82 they they did this again. A classic look. And this

this again. A classic look. And this

still works. This come up.

>> Yes.

>> Yeah. That's how you That's the fresh air like on a a defender. You have that >> the door you just if you want to open the window, you just release that and

fold that up on a dirt.

Oh dear. Oh dear. That was that was quite bonkers. We had the ride in the

quite bonkers. We had the ride in the 2CV, which I thought was just going to be a lap around Bulu, but no. But then

we went off and we ended up at another uh small producer 10 hectares this time and uh it was all very jolly and then he suddenly just disappears very [music]

French and we're in this cave and he disappears off and then we suddenly think what's he playing? He's got a musical strange box that like a

miniature organ and he starts wiring a handle and suddenly starts singing and uh we had not only did we have a ride in

the dust which was very nice to revisit and sort of flat out up the hills and things but then yeah we were serenated while we tasted all his wines and it was

very special utterly bonkers. The other

thing I was quite impressed with with the Duro, I've been saying how good the Rolls-Royce is on these speed bumps where you get to the 30 kilometer limits

and it's pretty damn good this car, but a Divo gives you a good run for the money. It might even be better.

money. It might even be better.

Yeah, the Rolls-Royce has a little book, Rolls-Royce to the Arctic fuel log. And

so I've been recording what we're doing.

So it's 724.2 miles so far. 539 equals. This is 185

miles we've done since the last fill up.

45 equals. Oh dear, that's not very good. 13.76

good. 13.76 MPG.

Yeah. So far is yeah 15.5 MPG first fill up then yeah 14.9 then 14 and then 13.7 I think it's what happens going in the

hills but that is what this car does if I look 14.88 16.4 four. That was the record. 14.714.

16.4 four. That was the record. 14.714.

Yeah, I'm afraid that is something that Rolls-Royce Silver Shadows do. They

consume petrol as well as a bit of oil.

14 15 MPG is about your lot. And it's

weird because you don't notice it when you're traveling cuz it's got a great big tank. So, I'm going quite a long

big tank. So, I'm going quite a long way. And then you do the calculation and

way. And then you do the calculation and it's not quite as good as you expected.

Anyway, what we're going to do, we're heading back to the hotel. We're

basically having a bit of a rest day, but tomorrow we've got quite a journey to do. We're just going up to the L

to do. We're just going up to the L Valley and it's meant to be better weather and things and uh so I think you'll rejoin us in the morning as we head off to L. Beautiful place we're

staying.

Well, morning. I've had a update on the wipers and whether I can get this wire out. I've had this little drawing here

out. I've had this little drawing here and there's this wiring block that goes into the wiper which you can sort of see here and I've got to look for the brown

with a green trace on a wire that's 55 years old and doesn't really look shiny and new. And if I remove this one wire,

and new. And if I remove this one wire, [snorts] the theory is that's the wire that takes the power to this wiper motor. When you turn the switch off, it

motor. When you turn the switch off, it goes, it still has power going to it to get to the park position and then turns off. But the micro switch controlling

off. But the micro switch controlling that is broken somewhere in here. And I

don't really want to take the the motor apart. But I just thought, can I if I un

apart. But I just thought, can I if I un have a look at this. I've just got to get this block. You probably won't see you. You'll see it in a moment if this

you. You'll see it in a moment if this pulls out. There we are. There we go. So

pulls out. There we are. There we go. So

that is the block. Now, rather

annoyingly, can you see any color? I can't see any color on that. Rather annoyingly,

the position that it shows, it's position two. So, you got one sort of

position two. So, you got one sort of that angle, one connection, that angle, it's this connection number two, I meant to remove. And guess what? In

that position, in this block, there isn't there isn't a wire going to it.

So, that's rather annoying. [sighs]

Oh flip.

So then I've got to do it on color.

There's two going to that one as you can see.

I don't think that's possible to do cuz I can't I don't really want to start removing WS and see what happens.

I'm going to go back to my Rolls-Royce specialist and say it's not like that.

Yeah, you can see there's no wire there.

Yeah, don't I don't think that's right.

Fortunately, the weather is on our side [snorts] and it's a lovely bright day.

You also notice the ice. It's quite cold here and you can see a bit of snow on the back window as well. Uh so quite chilly, right, put that back in the tool

kit at the back. Here is a map of what where we are. There we are. Beiju.

That's basically where we're staying here. Just between Macon and Leyon we

here. Just between Macon and Leyon we are and we are heading into the Lir Valley a beautiful place Shamboard the chat the Shambold is the second most

visited place after Versailles it's a wonderful wonderful chateau and we're staying right by it if you put it into Google ways or something it will take you on the auto route majority of the

distance further don't want to do that we're going to basically head into the hills follow up here and then just hook on to the

auto route just for the last bit. And

it's about 5 hours, 220 mi, and the sun is shining. Let's hope it stays that way

is shining. Let's hope it stays that way with no wipers.

I didn't mention the hotel where we were staying. It was Hotel Villa Alexander.

staying. It was Hotel Villa Alexander.

Lovely approach. When we arrived that first evening, it was beautifully lit and it had a real nice feel to it and it was good with the the positives was

really good food there and very reasonable. We had the Bolay Nuvo menu

reasonable. We had the Bolay Nuvo menu at about €40 for three courses. Rooms

are very nice. They had a slight issue with the heating while we were there.

It's got under floor heating and we had this sudden cold snap and under floor heating doesn't get going straight away when you have a sudden temperature change and they were slightly stopping

with that but I don't know a really nice position I in the summer or spring it looked great at an outdoor pool and things we're heading away now it's right

in the epicenter of Bojlet wine region a good place to stay and the way we're going there's me saying it's all blue sky and lovely where we're heading.

Rather than using the auto route, we're going a more direct route. And there's a slightly lumpy bit to get over before we get down to getting towards the L Valley. See all that cloud, that bank of

Valley. See all that cloud, that bank of cloud gripping the top of the mountain.

And there is obvious snow up there as well. That is the bit we have to get

well. That is the bit we have to get over first before we then drop down to a lower altitude.

Yes, but at least we're in the Arctic rolls which can handle such things.

We are uh how far we got to go? uh 151

kilometers and if you look outside of the windcreen yeah you'll see that yeah our lovely blue skies have gone

and we've got snow showers but fortunately we I have put rains on the windscreen and it's getting us out of jail at the moment and beam snow it's not actually hitting the windscreen

thank goodness but doesn't bode well we we'll carry on and hope the trouble RainX. The

positives is it does keep your windscreen clear. The negatives you

windscreen clear. The negatives you can't stop. It only does it if you're

can't stop. It only does it if you're carrying on at a reasonable speed. But

uh what are we doing? We're doing Yeah.

70 80 90 km an hour. So 50 m an hour behind a truck. Yeah. So we're not doing much filming on road. I think we'll just get straight to the hotel. Perhaps call

in at the shadow before we get there cuz I'm told it is very beautiful. But

fingers crossed doesn't get any worse than this.

[snorts] Yes, it's suddenly got a little bit worse. I'm tempted just to put the fuse

worse. I'm tempted just to put the fuse back, but this is supposedly a shower and I think it will stay clear enough

for us to drive. But yeah, look at it outside. That's not nice, is it? This is

outside. That's not nice, is it? This is

quite heavy, sticky snow, but the windscreen doesn't clear. Yeah, we'll

stop and put the fuse back in cuz RainX is struggling. Yeah.

is struggling. Yeah.

Oh dear.

Here's don't know if you can see this.

This is the map. This is We're just in this blob of blue and we're heading to Borg. So, we will be through it shortly.

Borg. So, we will be through it shortly.

Well, warning for a very frosty relay to Shamboo. This is where we stayed last

Shamboo. This is where we stayed last night. There was a beautiful, stunning

night. There was a beautiful, stunning shadow. Hardly there's a palace really

shadow. Hardly there's a palace really down there. Unfortunately, this morning

down there. Unfortunately, this morning it was minus 4 overnight and it was clear first light and then the fog has descended. But yeah, the poor old shad

descended. But yeah, the poor old shad has ice all over the windscreen. So, I

might just start it up, try and warm it up a bit while we get going. But just

just one thing I wanted to check is last night just when we arrived outside the hotel there's a strange creaking coming from the front wheel.

And I just want to check the wheel nuts.

I can't work it out. It might just be a stone or something in the trapped in the brakes as you get cuz it doesn't actually do it in reverse. I was

going around in reverse last night around this car park. Let's just see if I can get this out. There we are.

They look all right.

Right. Let's put that in there. Put this

in here. Just check that. Yeah, that's

tight.

I can't work out what it is.

Yeah, I don't know. They look dreadful, aren't they, about the hub caps, the Rolls-Royce, the black wheel. Yeah, this

is not There's nothing to say there's anything wrong there. A bit rusty, aren't they? Yeah. I don't know. I don't

aren't they? Yeah. I don't know. I don't

know what the noise is.

I don't think it's terminal. And it

doesn't make a noise in reverse. I

suppose we can just go home in backwards.

Right. I just put a last bit of oil in.

How many miles we done? 994 miles. We

are so close to 1,000 miles. [snorts]

It's got an automatic choke and it's a piece of metal that uh when it's cold it sort of shuts the choke down and we've adjusted it. We've

adjusted it so it doesn't come on quite as hard and that's why it's slightly reluctant to start in the morning, but

it always starts. You just pump the get the petrol through and pump it up. Um,

yeah. I don't know if you can hear that.

That's all the ventilation valves doing crazy things in there. There we are. to

set it to hot does make a peculiar noise. Really does.

It's perfectly normal, sir. They all do that. Well, I don't know if they all do

that. Well, I don't know if they all do that. Mine does it and it's done it ever

that. Mine does it and it's done it ever since I've owned it.

Plan for today, we have about 4 hours to do to get to the ferry. We have to be there about 3:00. We're going K to Portsmouth on this trip. And yeah, we're just going to do some shopping and

things as well. Just a couple of things I was thinking about last night. Wipers.

I have three, well I did have three four-seater sort of 70s cars. All three

have suffered wiper issues. We had the XJ Cooper went off to Ireland and they ceased to function as soon as it rain started really heavy rain. That was a complete pain. The Espada, they had this

complete pain. The Espada, they had this sort of kiss in the middle job and they used to have a little fight every now and then and snap off. Rain next to the rescue. And now Rolls-Royce Silver

rescue. And now Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow has a problem. That's so

frustrating cuz this little switch in here that's causing the issue, it's probably a 50 repair, but uh there you go. I don't know why. Always check your

go. I don't know why. Always check your wipers on your 70s cars if you're touring this time of year. Another

little thing I I haven't mentioned the badge on this. this automobile um club of Monaco. So I have been a member of

of Monaco. So I have been a member of for a number of years and they've always had this beautiful badge. I quite like badge and grew up you used to see badges on cars like this and I thought you know

what I'm going to put it on the silver shadow. What's great about this badge

shadow. What's great about this badge and this club is start line in Monaco when they hold the Grand Prix in the grid. That is where the club is

grid. That is where the club is positioned. And if you are a member, you

positioned. And if you are a member, you can actually turn up at other times of year and just park outside the club. And

one day I'm going to take my £4,100 eBay purchase Rolls-Royce and park outside the Monaco Club on the pit straight. So that's a bit of fun. That's

straight. So that's a bit of fun. That's

the only reason that's there. I think it looks it um adds a bit of class to the Rolls-Royce. But I I just love what

Rolls-Royce. But I I just love what something you got to mention. Even

though it's this crazy price, look at the shut lines on the Rolls-Royce. Look

at this door.

It's an aluminium door, steel wing, that shut line. Look how precise that is.

shut line. Look how precise that is.

They are beautifully made. Look at the shut line on that rear door. I don't

know. There's just a sense of class about it. And the other lovely thing I

about it. And the other lovely thing I like about this this early model, see those lights? I'm quickly going to turn

those lights? I'm quickly going to turn the lights on.

Always think it's like a boat. It's like

little port and starboard lights. So you

have that light there and then this white light at the front and it's they then replace them with reflectors.

So this you have to buy a very early model to have these little outr rididers bulbs and they only come on with headlights. Just a lovely little thing.

headlights. Just a lovely little thing.

And they're they're little vents that put fresh air down by your feet. But uh

not so good when you go to the Arctic cuz they just throw a bit too much cold air into the cabin. What I'm going to do now, we've got to do we got a bit of a dash today. The weather is not great.

dash today. The weather is not great.

There is a beautiful shadow there, this palace, and you can't see it cuz it's foggy. I'll throw in some pictures of

foggy. I'll throw in some pictures of it. We got a beautiful picture of it at

it. We got a beautiful picture of it at night. We're just going off to do a

night. We're just going off to do a little bit of shopping and then we'll get to Khan ferry overnight. It's half 4 I think it leaves gets in at half 9 into

Portsmouth and I will do a roundup on the journey and some thoughts on the Rolls-Roy Silver Shadow on a road trip once I'm back home. So that's the next time you'll join us unless something

goes wrong on the way to the ferry.

Okay. Well, we left the hotel and this wheel started making very nasty noises and it got worse and worse and then there was almighty not nice noise

and I stopped by here tire place in France and they very kindly just took it in jacked it up and we have a failed wheel bearing here and that is a right

pain. You can't really see anything.

pain. You can't really see anything.

Drop it in now. The noise it's making.

>> Okay.

>> It's the wheel bearing, isn't it? Yeah.

>> It's not healthy.

>> And I don't like the metallic bit cuz it was obviously a bearing casing breaking up. We have three in a bit hours. I

up. We have three in a bit hours. I

don't know how far it is to the ferry from here, but uh there's a reasonable chance. Yeah.

177 miles. Be much easier to be rescued in the UK. So that's my ambition is to get to the UK and then get it picked up

on the ferry, but is whether we get the 177 miles to the ferry on time. Anyway,

one way to find out and that's to set off. If I was in the UK, I have to say I

off. If I was in the UK, I have to say I wouldn't be driving this car, but um yeah, the rescue from France, I have RAC cover Europeanwide. It just is quite a

cover Europeanwide. It just is quite a delay getting the car back. Let's see

what happens.

Well, this is all very weird. We are

continuing on. We we diagnosed wheelbearing and I thought, well, I won't go on the auto route. I'll go

cross country to Leong, which is on the way to KHN. And we're traveling along at 60 65 miles an hour. And there is no

sound. I know the bearing's gone,

sound. I know the bearing's gone, but it's all holding together. And I

spoke to my Rolls-Royce man, Danny, and he says, "I have had bearings gone beyond you wouldn't believe, and I have

customers driving in with cars that are still going." He says, "I would press on

still going." He says, "I would press on because it's Yeah, heavy engineering.

The whole thing of Rolls-Royce is heavy engineering. So, I know it's failed and

engineering. So, I know it's failed and I'm taking it very gently on roundabouts and curves, not to overload that wheel."

And we have 147 miles to go to the ferry.

Oh, let's just see what happens. And

we're back. I've never been so grateful to see that ferry terminal in KHN. As we

approached, it was becoming increasingly obvious we were going to make it. And it

was a actually a really nice trip. Those

roads around Lemon, big, empty, dead, straight, and the weather was sort of helpful as well. It was sunny and yeah got to the ferry sigh of relief knowing oh it was going

we're going to get home without all the hassle getting it picked up in Europe.

Um and then yeah the ferry itself just yeah mentioned Britany fairies again that was £185 KHN to Portsmouth but that included a

Commodore cabin which is just it's well you think you're on a cruise it was it was £55 extra don't almost want to mention it because it's I think it's such good value and we had it for the

crossing it was like half past 4 we left and we got get in at half past 9 so it's not an overnight ferry but you have this beautiful cabin which actually the one

we had had an outside area. November

wasn't the time to use that. Lovely

telling. We watched Strictly Come Dancing and Blackpool on the way back.

There's a stocked fridge and there's some treats and coffees and things. I

mean, amazing price and especially so when you think the Euro Tunnel that's getting increasingly expensive. It was

157 just for the halfhour trip out. I've

given up with Flexi Plus because that's um 315 330 pounds. I think that's for just one way. Anyway, Britany Fairies. I

really enjoy the trip. We rolled out of the ferry 9 and drove home. Uh so yeah, some trip that is the closest I've ever

felt that we were not going to get home.

I've done an awful lot of trips, but when that wheel bearing went, it was a horrific noise. I'm annoyed with myself

horrific noise. I'm annoyed with myself cuz I didn't actually record the really horrid noise. I just got the start of

horrid noise. I just got the start of it. But a wheel bearing when they fail,

it. But a wheel bearing when they fail, you normally get quite a lot of warning.

You get a sort of drone and you get play in the wheel and then you tighten it up and it continues to drone or need to change the wheel bearings. But this time it just made that horrible noise. And

even now, just do that. There's not a lot of wobble. has not got worse since I, you know, did that check on it with that tire guy down in France. Um, so

that will get repaired. Um, and yeah, I quickly washed it off because obviously there was salt on the roads and I'd sprayed it before we went. I put a wax

on it all around sort of the vulnerable areas and I use that ACF-50 spray on mechanical components underneath and then when I get home I'm strict wash it all off and here it is looking super

shiny.

So I've got a dilemma really. I did a a little check of the numbers for the trip. Yeah, 1300 miles in all. Um

trip. Yeah, 1300 miles in all. Um

average MPG was 14.6 six, but it did consume near enough 5 L of oil. And

yeah, that's too much. I'm going to have to do something about that. And I have been thinking, what do I do? Because of

I can just chuck another engine.

Rolls-Royce engines, 6 and 3/4 engines.

I could have one of those fitted unrebuilt just a donor engine about £3,000. If I rebuild this six and a

£3,000. If I rebuild this six and a quarter engine, each piston and liner is £500 and there's eight of those. So,

there's £4,000 gone. And then you're into bearings and you're going to put the oil pump on and so you're going to not have much change from £8,000.

But the car had a a new gearbox about 10,000 miles ago with the previous owner. They'd also replaced all the

owner. They'd also replaced all the braking system. I've done the body work

braking system. I've done the body work on it up to there.

And it's very presentable now. So it's

almost Oh, the suspension. I've rebuilt

suspension. The Billstein shockers on this transformed it. And the ride quality is just out of this world. So

it's almost the last thing to do is the engine. I think that might happen.

engine. I think that might happen.

Another little comment, the comfort level is just extraordinary. Those

seats, they I I've never been more comfortable on a long journey than in these seats. They are sprung themselves.

these seats. They are sprung themselves.

You've got this beautiful platform that rides really well as well. No effort

from anything on the dash. The and

another nice thing, we did actually fit a sort of modern radio that looks like an old one. So that's Bluetooth. So we

can play happily stream to it. And I

love there's a little knob here that does fade between the speakers. And you

think, oh, it's stereo. Actually, it's

just one speaker at the front there and then there's another one on the parcel shelf. But all these sort of knobs, all

shelf. But all these sort of knobs, all these lovely organ stops and the just the feel of these knobs and controls is just lovely. Really like that. And we

just lovely. Really like that. And we

have lamb's wool rugs in here as well.

So yeah, you you're not slumbing it in a Rolls-Royce Silver Shadow, especially not if you're in the back. That is the comfiest chair going. It's slightly more

reclined you normally find in the car.

Just the ambiance is amazing. in. And

then I look at the thickness of the front seats and it just shows you how much upholstery. Look at that armchairs

much upholstery. Look at that armchairs really. And the other details I like on

really. And the other details I like on this car is just on the door. All this

chrome work. Everyone was smokers apparently in the 60s7s. A great big astray cigarette light and this puddle light still working. 55 years later that's all working. Wood's pretty good

as well. So,

as well. So, what a trip that was. And I ought to just tell you another little backstory on this Silver Shadow. I decided I had

too many four-seater sort of 70s cars in the having the Jagler, this Sparta, and this. So, I had a sort of showdown which

this. So, I had a sort of showdown which one I was going to sell. And just from it's one of those tests with at EVO, you put the keys on the table, which keys

you're going to take. And after taking all three out, the key I most wanted was the Silver Shadow of the three. And I

have surprised myself. And then you put the value equation in. And maybe this is now worth about £10,000.

But the pleasure I get from this car is off the scale. It is unlike any other car in this garage. And the feelgood factor just floating around in this

thing. And then everybody's reaction to

thing. And then everybody's reaction to it. People love seeing this car out and

it. People love seeing this car out and about. It's just a sight you don't

about. It's just a sight you don't normally see. And I personally think

normally see. And I personally think it's incredibly elegant and I love it in white. You've probably heard the

white. You've probably heard the backstory. The first farm I ever worked

backstory. The first farm I ever worked on straight from school, first real job was a Mr. Tyson's farm, but he had this building company like Macau Pines in Liverpool, the dominant guy. He had a

white Rolls-Royce and that was my first sight of a Rolls-Royce on a regular basis. and he took me for a ride in it

basis. and he took me for a ride in it when we had a cow calf down the field and asked me to put the newly born calf in the boot of his Silver Shadow and then we came back from the fields and

put it in a pen. So, white Rolls-Royce, I absolutely love it. And I think because of all that, I will do the engine rebuild. So, watch out. In 2026,

engine rebuild. So, watch out. In 2026,

you'll see an engine rebuild on this.

So, there you are. Hope you enjoyed this video. A different sort of thing. You're

video. A different sort of thing. You're

just joining us as we float around France and the BJ Nuvo and seeing those small wine producers. Wonderful trip.

Abs loved every minute despite the issues with it which were all now easily sorted. And if you did enjoy this video,

sorted. And if you did enjoy this video, keep watching, keep subscribing. More
