let's talk about how to pass the Schroeder's first round interview [Music] what's up guys it's Mike from job read English here with another pasty
interview video today we're going to be talking about the asset management Giant schroders and how you can pass their first round interview as ever if you want as much help as possible with
passing your Schroeder's interview with an up-to-date research note for 2022 based on publicly available sources courses videos and worksheets as well as sample answers but make sure you check
the link to the Schroeders past the interview pack down in the description below if you've never watched a pastor video interview before then we split it up into three parts all based upon our research from publicly available sources
from candidates who've been through the process in 2022 we're going to talk about the recruitment process the most common questions which came up I.E that
were asked multiple times to different candidates and other questions we came up to which we found interesting and how we think about the best way to answer these questions so let's Jump Right In candidates reported that the Schroeder's
interview process from application all the way to offer lasted about 3 few months there's an online application and online tests for the interview details people had different responses based
upon the roles they were applying for which was either several rounds of interviews with colleagues a mix of technicals and Casual meetups and questions vary by role and location a mixture of motivation and behavioral
questions with a project manager and another analysts some candidates reported having to do an investment idea pitch where they had to submit a one-pager before the interview of the
main points of the investment thesis and also interviews of other project managers and then the head of that division so generally actually when we're talking about investment Banks and
asset management funds the interview style that we tend to notice is first of all you'll have a behavioral interview which will be a mixture of motivational competency questions which is screener
either with a member of HR or a junior analyst on the team you then meet with a manager and then with the director and that of course always depends on the size of the team for the assessment day
it depended on the role maybe the whole day is based at Schroeder's office where a number of potential candidates will come together to complete exercises and to be interviewed for a final time so that was the Schroeder's recruitment
process let's talk about the most common questions that candidates reported being asking and there were six of them number one describe a time when you realize you were deficient in a specific skill and
took action to improve your capabilities in that area so the first thought that comes to mind is why am I even being asked this question and the main reason is we really want to think about what
we'd need to do for the role so working as an analyst at an investment or asset management firm like Schroeder's you need to consume a large quantity of information generally you're going to specialize in a particular vertical so
for example you may specialize in Commodities so you might just specialize in gold for example but you'd need to be consuming a lot of information you need to be doing a lot of reading and
constantly learning so that you can give the right reports to other analysts so managers and to people who are going to be giving that advice either to their clients or who are managing money on
behalf of their clients so talking about learning a new skill is really about saying well I realized through my time at University that I wasn't particularly good at writing essays so I bought a
couple of books about writing essays I watched the course and I implemented the lessons in a 30-day plan that's a fairly systematic way of looking at the thing and also reflecting why do you think you
were deficient in that skill well I noticed that when I went to my first year of University I would score lower and when I looked at my other friends
their essays I noticed that my information and my sources were good but what wasn't so good was the way that I had structured or formatted that information question two describe a time
when you had to perform a task that required keeping attention to detail and maintaining quality now when you're producing reports for people in a really busy environment the purpose of
producing those reports is to summarize a lot of information and then to give it to somebody else and say hey I've just read all of these things and this is what's really important this is what you
need to know to enable you to make a decision about whatever you need to make a decision about this is generally a really important skill in most areas of Finance which is attention to detail and
quality so perhaps above and beyond being bright ambitious intelligent and having the skills is really just trying not to make mistakes because if you make a mistake that kind of has a Cascade
effect so somebody has presented information you make a mistake they present that information to somebody else and they make a decision and someone and so forth right particularly
when it comes to making Investments so thinking about that could be you relating something from your work experience because ideally when you're presenting the experiences that you're
going to talk about for a competency-based question should be relay it to work it doesn't have to be the same job but it should demonstrate the same skills that you have learned if
not something outside of academics so this could be extracurriculars it could just be your hobbies engage with other people and if you don't have that then just something to do with school work what I would say is a word of caution
particularly if you're watching this and you're really just kind of thinking about applying to Schroeders you're not going through that process and you're reflecting why I don't really have any experience outside of academic and this
is something that I've really push you to do because of course academics is something that you have to do because you're at University whereas extracurriculars work and all that other stuff is things that you choose to do so
you can go on and get better experience and get a little bit of a a greater grasp of what life has to offer instead of just being based around your study question number three describe a
specific situation where you had an opportunity to contribute to a team success really for me this is just a question about a mixture of team work and personal leadership so contributing
to team success could just be well doing your part of the job helping others communicating clearly clarifying what needs to get done just kind of going up above and beyond it could be innovating
on a new idea thinking about a new way of doing things there's lots of different ways to approach this and you probably have a really good example from your academics so really just to
simplify this question when you were were you a good team member working as part of a team and you carried out something which was successful question four describe a time when you accepted
responsibility for something that failed and what steps you took to correct the situation so this is kind of what I'd call a negative competency question so it's like well I'm having to reveal
something that I did that was bad rather than that was good um so a time that you failed we all fail every so often I'll speak to somebody and they'll go well I've never really
failed at anything but realistically if you have expectations you know that kind of mind that maybe you just didn't reach the level that you thought that you were going to reach you didn't do things as quickly as you thought that you were
going to do them so failure is really just the path to success and the path to success is paved by adequate reflection auditing I.E you know a self-examination
auditing I.E you know a self-examination and they're just thinking what is it that I need to do so for example you failed an essay or an exam or you failed to hit a deadline so what do we reflect
upon this well the first thing I'd say is well why do I think that I failed that did I lack information do they lack time what is the resource that I lacked that I need to improve on for next time
the next thing that I would say is okay so how did you go out and find that resource did you plan your time better did you ask somebody for help you go and get a one-to-one tutor for something
that you're struggling with did you buy a book or enlist a course online and then the result that you then give is well when I had to do this again I was more successful because I did ABC
question number 5. why do you want to work at schroders so for an in-depth explanation of how to answer this question plus a free worksheet make sure you click the card up above so when talking about why you want to work for
schroders the most important thing is picking out five or six key facts that are really specific about Schroeders and I'm going to read you one which is in our five fast facts and our research
note Schroeder's manages about 730 billion pound has that AUM assets under managed so there's a very specific fact about schroders and you do want to be
specific and if you end up sounding like a list then try and pick out some information about the company which you can relate to personally just so you know researching a company should only
take you about 15 minutes and you can do most of it on the website whether that be about us the history page insights blogs whenever I see people and they've just been a bit lazy and they're
presenting information that really could be said about any company I just think we just knew you're not really that bothered to do the job if you can't put in the time the 15 minutes to research the company question number six give me
a time when you've shown resilience so showing resilience is basically what are you going to do when things get tough when times get hard or when you fail maybe you had a tight deadline maybe you
have multiple things going on at the same time maybe you failed an exam what is it that you did after that event so life throws you a problem what is it
that you do to deal with that problem so say for example you had a difficult project to do you're having to balance a part-time job and also have some element of social life so you're thinking well
before actually I didn't do so good in that essay it could be that you you might turn around and say well I try to engage I realize I couldn't find more time so what I have actually tried to do
is be much more focused in my time and engage in some element of deep work to between the hours of 8 AM and 4 P.M you
can't actually get me on my phone because I'm busy doing one or two really important important things quite difficult things to make sure that when it gets to the evening I've got my work
done and I can enjoy my evening or go to my part-time job here's a couple of other questions just to answer in a rapid fire way what did you do before that would be a benefit to the company
pick out the job description make sure you know the skills that they're looking for and use a couple of those skills in your answer how do you stay up to date with best practices well this is really about business and Commercial awareness
and making ensure that you're aware of websites and Publications which relate to the vertical that you're applying to I.E the specific Niche that you want to
I.E the specific Niche that you want to do question number three tell us about the time you used an Innovative technology solution to use a problem so this has to be a little bit above and beyond the internet but you could have
found a new product you could have learned to code you could have found a useful web application which you've used to solve a difficult problem question number four why are you interested in
finance you can't give a little bit of a history lesson and a personal motivation but again the important thing is to relate this back to the job description because I have these skills because I have these things which are of interest
to me which are also the things outlined in the job description and that's what you want always remember with questions around you know why do you want to do this role you'll want to relate it back to the job description guys I hope that
