well hello there welcome to another video today's video is going to be all about pronunciation now I have got a bit of a cold so I'm hoping that it doesn't distract you too much so as you know on my channel I teach the modern received pronunciation British accent and this is the accent that I speak
with something that really characterizes the accent is that we often reduce or take away the vowels so if you don't know what a vowel is it's a e i o u and when we reduce or remove the
vowels we replace them with the magic sound so I call it the magic sound but other people call it schwa so you've probably heard this word being referred to but I call it the magic sound I just think it's a bit more fun and schwa is sometimes difficult to even pronounce so this magic sound
or schwa is just uh uh it doesn't sound very interesting or special does it when it's inside a word though or inside a sentence it really helps to soften the whole sound of the sentence and this
is what characterizes the British accent this is what gives it that soft smooth sound okay so today I'm going to show you four ways to use this magic sound in your speaking to give you the modern received pronunciation British accent that's such a mouthful um and if you decide to use these tips
the result will be your accent will be softer let's get started number one we don't generally pronounce the a so the article a in a sentence when we're speaking we tend to use the magic sound
so let me just say these two sentences and you can listen Okay I picked a rose and put it in a vars I picked a rose and put it in a vars can you hear that ah that helps the sentence flow and sound soft listen to it without the magic sound
I picked a rose and put it in a vars it's a lot more robotic it's a lot more jumpy okay so use the magic sound if you want it to flow here's another example I went to a cafe to have a coffee I went
to a cafe to have a coffee a coffee it also allows you to go to the next word really easily because it helps to blend the words together so the schwa or the magic sound is really clever sound
try not to say a in sentences and use uh instead number two we don't generally pronounce two in a sentence either okay and you guessed it we use the magic sound instead with of course the sound of ta
so an example I went to the market to buy some flowers I went to the market to buy some flowers can you hear that it's really nice and it just hints at that word it doesn't say to
okay listen to it with two I went to the market to buy some flowers that's quite different again it's much more robotic it doesn't flow so well okay so try not to say two and try to
say ta instead number three now I've told you about this before but in the modern received pronunciation British accent we don't really like the r we try to reduce it or completely remove it if we can and here is an example of that in practice so words ending with ER
generally well we use the magic sound so listen to these words teacher lavender easier together forever can you hear that uh uh that is the sound you want to make not together forever
easier okay so take away that R use the magic sound instead number four the last one words ending in i o n now there are a lot of them and these words have the magic sound inside okay
let me show you television decision onion Nation action can you hear that always coming again and again that is really going to help soften those vowels and give you that sort of smooth sound that
you're looking for now I'm going to show you all those sounds all together in one reading so I'm going to just speak and you can try try to listen to each sound you can hear it as it all comes together to create what we're what we're trying to achieve which is the modern receive pronunciation
