Apple won't like this.

Summary
## Key takeaways - **LG's Render Lies Exposed**: The product images showed pretty much no bezel and a super clean design, but the final product has very clear bezels that are nowhere near the render, which feels like LG is just lying to us. [00:39], [02:56] - **Matte Display Graininess Issue**: The matte texture makes the super sharp 6K text look a bit grainy with an overlay, unlike the glossy sharp magazine-like quality I prefer, though it's an in-between that reduces glare effectively. [02:18], [07:25] - **6K Workspace Revolution**: With 6K resolution scaling perfectly at half, you get massive real estate to edit full websites across desktop, tablet, and mobile views simultaneously or work on 4K video timelines with room for color grading and clips. [09:48], [11:03] - **Thunderbolt 5 Wasted Potential**: This is one of the only monitors with Thunderbolt 5, but it's pointless beyond daisy chaining since the IPS panel is limited to 60 Hz, and LG could have easily made a 6K 120 Hz version as they produce the panel themselves. [12:08], [12:43] - **Overpriced Design Over Specs**: At $2,000, it's less than half the Pro Display XDR's price but harder to recommend than the $1,299 Asus ProArt which offers better value with calibrated colors, while this uses plastic parts despite the nice minimal design. Okay, so this is the cover. Oh no. Okay,
so I've done quite a few videos now on high resolution displays. I've done the Koicon 5K, the Coyon 6K. I've done the Asus Pro Art 6K as well. This is LG's
one. Uh they actually announced this in
one. Uh they actually announced this in January of this year and the renders of it, well the product images they put together looked amazing. Pretty much no bezel, super clean design, just very minimalistic. The final product though,
minimalistic. The final product though, it'll be interesting to see if it actually matches those product images.
and I have a feeling it won't. So, yeah.
Uh, let's get into it and sort of go through what we're going to get in here.
Weirdly, the first thing I noticed is that it says U9 on it. And when I look at the product page and stuff like that, it doesn't mention U9 anywhere. So, this
must be the official name, the U9. Who
knows? Let's get into it. It says not to use a knife. The box is quite small, thankfully, even though it is
a 32 in monitor.
31 and 12 inch monitor. Inside we have got the stand which it actually feels very solid. This feels heavy. We have
very solid. This feels heavy. We have
got the sort of mount for the stand and for the monitor. The monitor mount itself.
the monitor. The monitor mount itself.
We have what looks like one of the biggest power bricks I've ever seen for a monitor. So clearly they have moved
a monitor. So clearly they have moved all the sort of power management for the monitor into this brick rather than in the monitor which will hopefully keep it thinner. We do have an array of cables.
thinner. We do have an array of cables.
We have the display port cable. We have
a USBC to USBC cable. We also have a separate Thunderbolt 5 cable, which is nice to see. And then we also have a HDMI cable. So, a lot of options there
HDMI cable. So, a lot of options there to connect all of our devices. Connect
to PC, games console, MacBook, just everything. Before we get the monitor
everything. Before we get the monitor out the box, I did actually want to look at the mount. And yeah, this side I really like it. It's silver, but this side it's like it's like a navy blue, a dark blue. I'm not too sure about that.
dark blue. I'm not too sure about that.
But thankfully, I guess that will be facing away from you. It'll be sort of against the [music] wall, so you won't see it as much. So, let's do this.
Like so.
We're in. And then we can put the monitor there like so. Okay. So,
this is the cover. Oh, no. Don't tell me it's a matte display.
It is. you know, there there is nothing wrong with the matte display, but I personally prefer glossy displays, and I know a lot of other people do as well.
This is sort of in between that LG like to use where it's not fully matte, but it's also not fully glossy. Uh, for some people though, I know glossy displays are what you really want. And the bezels
are nowhere near the render. They're not
even close to the render. There's very
clear bezels on this, which isn't an issue. I just think to myself like, hey,
issue. I just think to myself like, hey, if you're going to put a product images of something like this where you show bezels that are non-existent, come on.
Like, you're just lying to us, LG. Come
on. This is this isn't good enough.
[laughter] But the rest of the design I I will give them actually looks really really good.
It does look clean. It does look minimalist. I do like the front. There's
minimalist. I do like the front. There's
no logos or anything. Fair play to LG there not putting their logo on the front and having a very symmetrical design. The stand as well looks nice and
design. The stand as well looks nice and clean. It does look very similar to a
clean. It does look very similar to a Pro Display or a Studio Display. No
denying that, but that isn't a bad thing. Yeah, you can see the sort of
thing. Yeah, you can see the sort of matte texture here. You can see how [music] the light is reflecting off it and it's diffusing, which I think is
actually very similar to their 4K 480 Hz dual mode monitor, which I also have, which I like. I think it looks pretty good. Um, personally, you know, I still
good. Um, personally, you know, I still do prefer fully glossy displays, but if you're someone who doesn't like reflections and glare, this is a good in between. Let's look at the back of this
between. Let's look at the back of this thing. So, let's turn it around. It
thing. So, let's turn it around. It
isn't light. It is quite a heavy monitor, but let's look at the back. You
see, the back is really clean, apart from this blue. This is a really odd choice. I don't understand why
choice. I don't understand why not just leave it silver. Why add this blue groovy? I mean, it looks cool. The
groovy? I mean, it looks cool. The
design is cool. I actually quite like the art deco styling, but why blue? I
just don't understand that. That doesn't
make any sense to me. On the back, we do have the display port, the HDMI port, two Thunderbolt ports, and three USB ports. So, you basically get a full
ports. So, you basically get a full built-in hub with this, which is nice. I
think if you're someone who's connecting multiple devices uh and wants to have everything all all in one without having to have a hub. Yeah, this would actually work. The blocky design is nice. I do
work. The blocky design is nice. I do
like this blocky design. I think it looks nice. And you can see actually
looks nice. And you can see actually there is a grill for cooling and I assume speakers as well. So, it's not a solid block of sort of aluminium like there is on the Studio Display and the Pro Display XDR, which this is going to
be compared to the mice, the Pro Display XDR and the Studio Display. Primarily,
the Pro Display XDR because this is a 6K [music] resolution. There is also quite
[music] resolution. There is also quite a bit of adjustability. So, you can bring it down. Does it go down any further? Yep, it goes down quite a lot
further? Yep, it goes down quite a lot actually. But it's very very stiff. It
actually. But it's very very stiff. It
goes up as well. Um, it rotates as well and it doesn't sort of swivel uh because I guess the stand itself doesn't move.
But yeah, I think for most people the adjustability will be enough. It's
actually very similar to the Pro Display XDL, the Studio Display sort of stand where you can adjust it and stuff up and down. Yeah, I think for most people this
down. Yeah, I think for most people this would be good. Okay, time to connect it to my Mac. And one issue I can already see is that there is no hole in the back of the stand, which means there is no
cable management options, which means that this cable here that you guys can see is just dangling and there's no way to really hide it. So, they've gone for this clean design, clean aesthetic, but
they've missed out the the cutout in the stand to hide the cables, which is h yeah, it's one of those oversized I like that is a shame really, but it is what
it is. Okay, I've switched laptops so
it is. Okay, I've switched laptops so that I have my M4 Max MacBook Pro, which is a Thunderbolt [music] 5.
Um, it connects power. Maybe I've got it in the wrong port. I just realized maybe I got to change the port on the back.
change the port. Maybe we're going to put in the port above.
Yeah, I do.
So, you got to make sure you put in the right port, guys. Put it in the right hole, if you know what I mean. Um,
[laughter] amazing. Looks sick. Looks
amazing. This is an IPS panel, so it's not OLED. There's no mini LED, no local
not OLED. There's no mini LED, no local dimming zones or anything like that. And
I can already tell there is a difference. I don't know if you guys can
difference. I don't know if you guys can see that, but considering, you know, this is a miniLEDD display on my MacBook Pro. And then you have the IPS on this.
Pro. And then you have the IPS on this.
You can see the blacks aren't as black as they are on this display because the wallpaper I have on this display is an actual black background. Uh [music] and you can see around the bezels and stuff.
You can see there's a distinction there.
So looking at one of my own websites here where I'm looking at the colors and I'm looking at the text. The colors to
me don't look as good as they do or as accurate as they do on my MacBook or my Pro Display XDR. It's close though. The
text as well, the text is super super sharp. There's no doubt about it. But
sharp. There's no doubt about it. But
because it has that sort of matte texture on it, I can see it almost looks a bit grainy. Um, it doesn't look sort of glossy sharp like magazine sharp like it should, which isn't ideal because I
think to myself, if I'm paying this much for a monitor and I have pictures, [music] text, and other elements on the screen, I want it to look incredibly
sharp and not have this sort of grainy overlay. It's quite hard to go from a
overlay. It's quite hard to go from a glossy display to a matte display like this because of this sort of grainy overlay there is. But like I said, matte displays are not a bad thing. I could
see this being so so useful in a room where there are lots of lights, where maybe you have daylight coming in, you don't like glare, you don't like reflections. This is absolutely perfect
reflections. This is absolutely perfect because [music] it's not the full matte display that you will usually see on other displays. It
is sort of in between. Like I mentioned, LG do a good job. I think actually LG are one of the best in [music] the in the industry right now to do the sort of in between the glossy and the matte.
When I look at some of the pictures that I shot on my latest trip to Japan and Hong Kong, yeah, they do look incredible on this display. Just having that 6K
resolution is fantastic. Like the
pictures just look phenomenal.
Absolutely amazing. You get that tac sharpness, really, really beautiful vivid colors.
The resolution on this display specifically is 6144x 3456, which is actually a bit more than the Proisplay XDR. just a few more pixels. So, it's
not actually exactly the same panel that you would find in the Pro Display XDR, which is interesting because the panel that's in the Pro Display XDR, as far as I can tell, is made by LG. So, maybe
Apple just [music] own some sort of rights to that specific resolution. I'm
not sure. But 6K resolution, man, when you're looking at pictures and stuff, editing pictures, oh, it does look beautiful. Just beautiful. These
beautiful. Just beautiful. These
pictures are shot on my Fujifilm X1006 which can shoot up to 40 megapixels I think it is. And yeah, man, these pictures look good.
They do look really, really good.
Can zoom in further, I think. Look at
some of the people in this picture.
Yeah, for someone who does photo editing, video editing, I think if you calibrate the monitor, you can get some amazing results here. I've also been
working in framer on a website and yeah having all this real estate like look how much room there is man like to work on stuff um and to see like all of the
elements like I can click on element I can have the full I can have like yo I can have the desktop tablet and mobile version with all of the panels either side as well I can just edit the whole website and look at all three of the
designs all at once that's what you're getting with a 6K display that's why you pay for a 6K display you get this amazing sharpness because it's scaled perfectly. It's scaling at half the
perfectly. It's scaling at half the resolution. So, if I show you here very
resolution. So, if I show you here very quickly, the way Mac OS works is that it takes half the resolution of the display so that it scales it perfectly.
So, when you're actually looking at [music] everything on the screen, it's scaled absolutely perfectly. Pixel
perfection basically. However, you don't lose the clarity of the images. You
don't lo the clarity of the text. It's
Mac OS's own weird way of scaling sort [music] of the display. Here is another example of where 6K display is super powerful. This is a full 4K resolution
powerful. This is a full 4K resolution image right here. A full 4K resolution video. If we look at the scaling, look,
video. If we look at the scaling, look, we can see it's at 100%. So, it's
showing me the full resolution of the video. 4K video here. Look how much room
video. 4K video here. Look how much room we still have for the timeline, for the color grading, for the clips. We have
all of this room, but we still have our full 4K video. This is where it's super super powerful and why I love a 6K display so that I can see all of my video but also edit it at the same time.
Now, unfortunately, there are some downsides to this. [music] It goes for $2,000, which is much cheaper than the Pro Display XTR, no doubt about it. The
Pro Display XTR goes for $5,000 and that's without the stand. So, [music] it is less than half the price. But there
are some other 6K monitors out there like the Asus Pro Art monitor and the Quicon monitor that go for much much less. The Asus ProArt monitor goes for
less. The Asus ProArt monitor goes for $12.99, so you [music] can save $700.
You can get a Mac Mini and the Pro Art display, and you basically get most of the experience. There is no webcam, but
the experience. There is no webcam, but there are speakers. However, speakers in a monitor are rarely ever good. So, I
would always recommend dedicated speakers anyway. I'm not sure you're
speakers anyway. I'm not sure you're going to get a very good listening experience using the speakers in this.
There is Thunderbolt 5 which actually makes this one of the only monitors out there right now that has Thunderbolt 5.
However, the downside of that is there is no point of it other than daisy chaining. I don't understand why they've
chaining. I don't understand why they've included Thunderbolt 5 when the monitor [music] itself is limited to 60 Hz. Like
I understand with the other brands selling 6K displays, they don't actually make the panel. However, LG make the panel. They could have made a 6K 120 Hz
panel. They could have made a 6K 120 Hz display [music] and then had the Thunderbolt 5 and it would have worked because Thunderbolt 5 is capable [music] enough to handle all of that data, a 6K
120 Hz display. [music] It is really, really disappointing and I'm actually really surprised that LG have done this here where they've implemented Thunderbolt [music] 5 but not taken the
extra step of having 120 Hz because that is by far the number one requested feature of these high resolution monitors of 5K monitors or 6K monitors.
People want that high refresh rate of 120 Hz. Now, for me personally, I'm okay
120 Hz. Now, for me personally, I'm okay with 60 Hz for now because when I bought the Pro Display XDR three or four years ago, Thunderbolt 5 didn't exist yet.
There were no devices that supported it or anything like that. So, LG have done everything here [music] but implemented the 120 Hz, but made a panel which is 120 Hz. It I just don't get it, man.
120 Hz. It I just don't get it, man.
[music] Like, you make the panel, guys.
Like, you could easily put 120 Hz here.
Obviously, there are other things at play here. demand, how much money are
play here. demand, how much money are they going to make from it, how much does it cost, all these different things, but I'm just surprised that they haven't done it. For $2,000, I actually find it hard to recommend because you
can get the Asus Prime monitor, like I said, for $12.99. You can get the Quicon monitor, I think, for like $1,600, $1,700. The only reason you'd get
$1,700. The only reason you'd get [music] this and happily pay for the $2,000 is to have this really nice minimal design. I'm not going to deny
minimal design. I'm not going to deny this is a very, very goodlooking monitor. But as far as I [music] can
monitor. But as far as I [music] can tell, it's still plastic. It's not made from aluminium. This this part isn't
from aluminium. This this part isn't made from aluminium. The stand is though, it feels very solid. Apart from
this part, I think I think this part is still plastic. So, you're also not
still plastic. So, you're also not paying for premium [music] materials.
You're paying $2,000 just for a nice design. Like, yeah, it's really, really
design. Like, yeah, it's really, really hard to recommend this. I would [music] recommend the ASUS Pro Art monitor. I
think for $12.99, that is just a [music] better buy, better value for money. It's
not as nice looking as this, but it has all the color profiles. It's calibrated
out of the box, so it works perfectly with the Mac. The colors, the accuracy, and everything just looks amazing. It's
really, really well done. So, yeah, let me know what you guys think. I have a feeling that Apple will be announcing new monitors quite soon, maybe in the next few months or maybe early next year to replace the Studio Display and the
Proisplay XDR. And I'm hoping that they will have the 120 Hz. Maybe they'll even be OLED, tandem or something like that.
That would be really, really nice to see. But yeah, this is just the IPS 60
see. But yeah, this is just the IPS 60 Hz panel. At the end of the day, IPS 60
Hz panel. At the end of the day, IPS 60 Hz panel with that can do 6K resolution for $2,000. Yeah, let me know what you
for $2,000. Yeah, let me know what you guys think in the comments below.
