Crawler Canyon Quick(re)view: 1.9" Injora Maverix RT (S5)

By Crawler Canyon

Summary

## Key takeaways - **Normal 44mm Width**: These are in the normal 44 to 49 millimeter width range, unlike the skinny Class 1 Baja MTZs or traditional Endura tires at 42 mm. This allows much greater fitment of a lot more foams. [01:16], [01:53] - **Extremely Tacky Compound**: These feel like fruit rollups, very tacky like mounting bubble gum, closer to RC4WD X2SS than other S5 tires like Klingon or XHX pin. Everything sticks to everything, stickier than typical X2SS. [03:52], [06:14] - **J-Concepts Quality Foam**: The included foam feels exactly like J Concepts medium, straight up if blind tested. It fits the tire precisely with right density, though jostling required due to stickiness. [02:22], [03:19] - **Unmatched Out-of-Bag Grip**: In class 2 testing, they deliver absurd precision and forward drive on single stage foam, using minimal throttle like 15-25%. Turn-in is sharp and abrupt, refusing to slip. [23:02], [20:52] - **98.4 Score Beats Majors**: Scored 98.4, tying 22 Roy Claw, beating 525 Tusk LP and Proline Hammer, just behind pricier 6ix KLR V2 at $130. Outperforms other S5 Enduras in 97s. [37:48], [38:07] - **Adhesive in Mud, Needs Cleaning**: Picks up mud due to adhesive nature, requires passes to clear and sling muck before traction returns. Not wet killers like exotics, deducts points in wet performance. [34:46], [37:01]

Welcome back everybody. A hail and hearty. Welcome back to the canyon.

hearty. Welcome back to the canyon.

Welcome back to another installment in the quick view series. It is in Jorah.

It is in Jorah on the bench again. And

uh because the current microphone is really good at its job, I feel like it's going to miss out on all of the little subtleties that it's just going to drown

out as background noise from this, which is the Endura Mavericks RT. That is

Maverick's with an X. Mavericks.

Um claiming to be S5 Compound. I have no reason to to uh not not to believe them.

No ribbing, no belting, nice proper beadlock lip in there. But here's the thing. I have tested, I think, all of

thing. I have tested, I think, all of the S5 1.9 offerings. The Swamp Claw,

uh, the Cllingon, the S5 XHX pin. This

feels like none of those. And why I was particularly uh looking forward to testing these is you see that right there? That's like the normal width,

there? That's like the normal width, what I call the normal width of a tire.

I consider normal to be anything in this sort of 44 to 49 millimeter width range.

Below that you have narrow. Above that

you have wide. Anything below 39 mm or narrower is skinny is what I call skinny. So when we recently tested the

skinny. So when we recently tested the Where are they? They should still be here on the end of the bench. When we

recently tested the class one there they are. When we tested the class one Baja

are. When we tested the class one Baja MTZs, uh, that's skinny. Uh, these look like they're in the normal range, like maybe

above 44. Traditionally, all the Endura

above 44. Traditionally, all the Endura tires have been 42 mm. The the XHX Pen, the Klingon, the Swamp Claw, etc. All of

the S5 stuff. Endora, what what happened with S4? S4. We've gotten in one flavor,

with S4? S4. We've gotten in one flavor, the S4 Comp pin, which is still in my mind one of the up there with the fake

Tusk, one of the leaders in price performance ratio. The included foam is

performance ratio. The included foam is a straight up, if you blind tested me and handed me two foams, I would think

this was a J Concepts foam. It feels

precisely what comes in all the Jconcepts foams. It's not because it's a little bit narrower and it looks a little bit shorter, but the foam itself

feels exactly like the J Concepts medium. Uh let me give one more mention.

medium. Uh let me give one more mention.

Honestly, when I pulled these out of the bag, uh they they they're kind of almost inoffensive in odor.

This feels like X2SS. This is the closest that I've felt to RC four-wheel drives X2SS, but with a proper foam, or at least one that feels proper.

T1925.

The Endura Mavericks RT. You got to you really have to jostle the foam into position because it sticks to the tire.

It's like uh it's it's a little bit like mounting bubble gum. Would I regard these as bubble juice mandatory?

I don't see any reason to mount these without bubble juice. It will make your It will make your job a lot easier.

Everything sticks to everything. These

are very tacky. So, is it a Is this a carcass thing? Did they thin the carcass

carcass thing? Did they thin the carcass down? They definitely feel thinner than

down? They definitely feel thinner than Klingons. Uh, is it just that with the

Klingons. Uh, is it just that with the carcass being that much thinner, it makes them feel that much tackier? I

don't know. I don't know. All four of these were uh were quite stuck to the bag that they came in. This, you know,

I've started to think that outside of Okay. J Concepts for sure. I would say

Okay. J Concepts for sure. I would say maybe also RC four-wheel drive. X2SS

largely feels like X2SS.

I have come to a a a we'll call it a theory, a theory in place of a conclusion that G8 is not a compound. G8

is a spectrum of compounds because we have felt with our fingies far too many

G8 tires that feel wildly different from other G8 tires. I can say somewhat

conclusively that what I would put in in uh air quotes G8 feels very very different from new G8. You

take an old flat iron XL and [snorts] compare that to a new Swamper, they feel they feel completely different. But then

you take some of the newer like the Toyo RT Trail and compare that even to say a Swamper and it feels different and they

perform differently. The thicknesses are

perform differently. The thicknesses are all over the place. Um

these if this is S5 it is. Can Can we do it here?

it is. Can Can we do it here?

They feel like fruit rollups. Um let's

see. So these have been in a stack.

Oh, I hope it doesn't drown that out.

I mean, I know stickiness stickiness doesn't tell us everything, but it it can tell us a lot. These are

maybe stickier than what I typically see in X2SS.

So [snorts] I am cautiously optimistic because 119

118 and a half perhaps which is right there under 4.75 and yes 44

and they say 165. Yeah truth and advertising these saying uh 4.75 by 1.65 65. I will absolutely I will I will

65. I will absolutely I will I will absolutely take that. That is certainly very close to what we're working with.

There's our guy. We're going to put some very clean tires. If I didn't emphasize it enough earlier, it's bubbles. It's

the stuff you blow bubbles with. It's

just very convenient to apply it with a dobber bottle. I spent many years uh

dobber bottle. I spent many years uh applying it with a paintbrush. And then

I was like, I wonder if they have some sort of a device where I can just allin-one this.

And I bought my bubble juice [snorts] so long ago that you all can tell me if you go out and procure your own, you can

tell me what does what is a quart size or a liter what's a liter of bubble juice cost nowadays? cuz I bought a

purple plastic 32oz bottle of bubbles from a local Walmart and much like an Arizona drinks can was emlazed on the

side of the plastic container 99.

I love when a manufacturer does that because it's like a stamp. It kind of locks in that price for a little while.

The retailer can't just be like, "Oh, that's a buck and a quarter." Uh guys, the label says 99 cents. So, we're going to pay 99 cents. I think nowadays, if I

were to go to a Dollar Tree, Dollar General, uh Family Dollar 99, we got a lot of stores around here that sell things for 99. Uh or used to. And

I'm just sad that we don't have the British one because Poundland makes me laugh every time I see it or hear it. I

would guess that this the 4 ounces the 118 ms this is probably about what 99 cents will get you today. But even at

that you will get [snorts] this. This is

the bottle that I use to remount tires.

My recommendation, fill two bottles because when you remount tires, the filth from those tires is transferred into the bubble juice. And uh like you notice there's no

like it can't even really make bubbles anymore. Whereas a this is the bottle

anymore. Whereas a this is the bottle that mounts new tires and it's a lot more it's a lot more translucent. So the

Maverick's RT I heard all four They are really sticky. They are 44 mm wide, which means what does that mean?

It means we have a a a much greater fitment of a lot more foams. That's good. These feel these feel pretty

good. These feel these feel pretty right. They fit the tire. The density

right. They fit the tire. The density

feels right. We might suffer a little side hilliness because we can can only pop them out. We're going to we're going to go out there into what is inarguably

predator weather. We're going to find

predator weather. We're going to find out how these do. I'm I'm looking forward to it because you know what I

love? We're having a a surge of $30 for

love? We're having a a surge of $30 for a set of tires. Uh the offerings from

MIA, the pin and the super bouncer from MIA, both in their MS6 compound. These,

of course, we've still got all of the S5 offerings like the Klingon and the XHX pin, the S4 pins.

You love, and by you, I mean we, and by we, I mean us. We love to see 30 bucks.

Get your shoes on. You don't have to worry about what foam is going to fit.

You don't have to. You just buy them.

You take them out of the bag and you run them. So,

them. So, I'm hopeful S5 has done well here. These

feel far more X2SS than they do S5. Let's see

if that translates to the rocks. Come on

out with me. Class 2 tire test protocol.

Under the rocks.

They they they pick up everything. Uh

it's like driving glue rings. I honestly

I just want these to do. Okay, here you go. Here's a selfish thing. I want these

go. Here's a selfish thing. I want these to beat their stablemates. I want these to beat the XHX pin and the Klingon just because they're a more normal width. The

the tires keep getting thinner and I they're the advantage of that is is completely offset. It's much more

difficult to tune to a very narrow tire.

Oh yeah. Squeak it.

We're going to find out.

Okay.

Thought I thought we'd gotten a new one.

They're They are so sticky.

the to the point where it's starting to concern me a little.

We've got to wait for the foam to shift around inside the tire a little bit.

I'm using Jeez, we're in this like mid20s throttle percentage level. the static

bag on the tire. They're they're just squishing.

So long as these don't absolutely disintegrate performance-wise on the sidehill.

We have a very nondescript, nondirectional lug.

So, I genuinely had concerns about composition, compound, and carcass.

No complaints. That thickness feels correct. Probably double the sidewall

correct. Probably double the sidewall thickness of say something in Vanquish Red. So, much more correct there. But

Red. So, much more correct there. But

they the feel of the foam is straight up J Concepts. And the feel of the carcass

J Concepts. And the feel of the carcass is and the compound by extension is straight up RC four drive X2s.

These are like they're under 30. I want

to say they were $26 for the set on Amazon, not even having to order from Endora.

I want to I want to repeat that initial pass one more time.

I genuinely anticipated the the wallow. You go to that full lock and because the carcass is thin, because the compound is super soft and super

sticky, it will roll that sidewall and you feel that push in the front end, but it's so sticky that you don't they turn

raise a sharp getting up to about 30% throttle. We'll

just give it a little nudge.

Yikes.

for out of the bag performance.

These are well, we're going to see.

They're about to hit dirt right now. Uh

these are setting a bar. I feel like based on Slick Rock, these are going to score high uh higher than I had anticipated initially. These are

anticipated initially. These are probably in a quick view format going to score higher than

a number of let's call them proven entities right the these have every opportunity to get

into J concepts numbers zero hesitations.

Now, I want you to use your own personal powers of interpolation and extrapolation because we've got less than five minutes of wheel time on

these. They look exceptionally

these. They look exceptionally promising. I love the price point. I'm

promising. I love the price point. I'm

going to use them on something for testing for sure for additional for future running. But

future running. But you have to take into account things of those known quantities. Okay?

There's there's no such thing as a free lunch.

So even if we're talking about we uh in Jorah not having overhead operating overheads that others do to to explain why these cost

right around half as much as something quote unquote branded injura is not an off-brand. They they might have started

off-brand. They they might have started there. Hobbywing used to be the choice

there. Hobbywing used to be the choice that you bought when you couldn't afford a quote unquote real electronic system and now Hobbywing is the go-to for most

everything. Not a millisecond of

everything. Not a millisecond of hesitation.

That said, say these score higher than a Tusk, and there's every chance that these are going to score higher than a Tusk. I have rigs that have been fitted

Tusk. I have rigs that have been fitted with tusks for three plus years, four years, the same set. So, so that's

longterm stuff. That's what's not

longterm stuff. That's what's not included in a quick view. We know their sidewalls don't tear. We know their lugs don't fall off. We know they don't tend to dry rot out while sitting on a tire

rack. This doesn't answer those

rack. This doesn't answer those questions. This gives you out of the

questions. This gives you out of the bag. Now, from that out of the bag

bag. Now, from that out of the bag perspective, these are stupid.

That front is folding way over under the softness of that foam. The compound is so it's it's not even sticky. We're

gonna we're going to reject that word.

The compound is adhesive.

There was nothing holding that except Oh, I got I got to try to position this.

Look at the sidewall from the roll out like like a couple of glue discs.

The positionability because they're so gluey.

I've mentioned in the past the transition at the end of the sidehill here is the combination of grip and

slip. These won't slip. They refuse

slip. These won't slip. They refuse

in terms of pure forward drive. And any

insert you choose that is not a single stage open cell foam is what I like to call moving the sliders. Any dual stage

insert is going to reduce compliance.

Reduction in compliance is generally not always but certainly as a as a general statement is going to reduce forward drive. Any 3D printed insert is

forward drive. Any 3D printed insert is going to reduce forward drive. There's a

reason crawler innovations and others of that sort are remain in business because that is that is where where you get it.

This is maximized forward drive. This is

a tire that I'm going to say a thing about that I have only said about a few other tires in the past, which is there is so much forward drive here.

You could very easily move those sliders and sacrifice that forward drive for some other performance

aspect. It's too much. This pulls too

aspect. It's too much. This pulls too hard.

Now again, baseline is the tire test vehicle right at that 5 and a half lb that like in that 2500 g range.

The the forward drive is on par with the hieroglyphic tires of yore. It's not some exotic foam. It's

yore. It's not some exotic foam. It's

just a medium. The compound feels very much like X2SS. The question should is not a question at this junction. Did

they get the three C's right? Did they

properly combine compound carcass and lug composition?

Ye. Yes. Um this is of the let's call them non- majors. So,

we're discarding six, Proline, J Concepts, Vanquish of all of those and asterisk.

Is this the best that I have experienced of of those $30 for a set tires?

Not not ju not just by a little. The

turnin is so sharp. Well, like watch. We'll get

We're'll get edge of frame over here. We

right here.

The turn in is so sharp. It's almost

abrupt.

They don't load.

And we got we got there's a little morning do on the ground. They don't

load like I thought they would. Real

slow.

Clear them off.

Want to give them a little grind.

Little deposition there.

I thought for sure I thought I I had an anticipation of just just an effortless dead pull right there.

They are so adhesive.

It almost gets you into trouble.

It feels like one end.

Did anyone else see the flatness of that? It's almost like

that? It's almost like we've taken a roll of tape and we've wound it inside out.

I thought they would load more, but the lugs seem fairly willing to kick it off.

Little bit of hop there.

I thought the lugs would be too tight.

Oh, there's a I talk about tires that are imprecise. Like they feel

are imprecise. Like they feel they feel like this. They feel like like they feel like this.

These don't feel like that when I Okay, I'm going to steer right.

[snorts] I'm going go passenger very gently and I want to reposition driver front up onto the edge of the L right here. I want to go

here. I want to go look at the [clears throat] amount of throttle input that we are using here.

Little more outside on that edge. Need

to position a little out. And then I'm gonna turn back.

And I don't want to catch my slider.

I just want to pivot. Little swingy

pivot. Using about 15% throttle right here. Going to have to grab that

here. Going to have to grab that little catch right across there. Pull and over.

The better a tire is doing, the better the collaboration of the seas, the lower the amount of throttle you can use to do everything because the tire

and the compound are doing the work.

We're kind of the tire test protocol came to be the way it is through basically testing tires and learning

what do we need to do to structure a test such that we're seeing what the tire can do and not what the rig slash geometry sllayout sltuning slall of that

is doing. This is why the protocol

is doing. This is why the protocol doesn't include a ramp because a ramp is pretty good at testing your suspension geometry.

There's a ramp right over there. It's

about 25 ft away from me. It's great at testing geometry. Virtually every tire

testing geometry. Virtually every tire makes it to the same point. And how did I test this to confirm it to myself?

Take any six tires of your choosing and put it on your 6x6 should you have one.

Then take four of those six and uh put them on like say this or anything else.

Whatever degree of vehicle you want to put it on. And the 6x6 is going to get higher on the ramp every time because it has 50% more tires.

I've taken the stickiest things and the non-stickiest things and they basically make it to the same point on the ramp.

The the level of control is absurd. [snorts]

absurd. [snorts] If this is S5, then I don't know what XHX pins and Klingons are.

I'll tell you right here and right now.

My stock insert, mind you, there's so much forward drive and yet right here squishing. Squishing.

Look at that driver front.

But they won't smudge. They got the carcass thickness just right for this compound.

If it's S5, excellent spinner there. If it's S5, great. If it's S5,

great. If it's S5, what happened with the other ones? When

we tested the S3s in Swampclaw, Kraken Claw etc. etc. Terrible. Terrible. I want to say that

Terrible. Terrible. I want to say that the S3 Kraken Claw is in like the mid80s or high 70s for score.

This is difficult to believe that it came from the same place.

This is difficult to believe that it's the same compound with the the act and the XHX pin and the

I'm I'm I've only got Mia in my head right now. The super bouncer and the and

right now. The super bouncer and the and the other pin. What is the X Klingon?

The XHX pin and the Klingon are good.

This is really the next level. When I had ordered up the first set of S5 tires to test

uh a couple of the dirty Trixie that uh participate in the uh dreadful activity of driving minis and micros and said that you know in the 1.0 and 1.3 S5

is like isn't adhesive. They're like

glue rings. And I got the ones and I mounted them up and I was like, "These are not bad." Like, this feels fairly typical.

This This is what I was anticipating when they said uh it's like driving on tape.

I didn't hit you with the numbers. I

didn't hit you with the numbers.

That is 51° which is like what what is that in Fahrenheit? Like 10 and a half something like that in in Celsius. I'm

trying to learn.

And uh humidity not so bad. It's

supposed to start bucketing rain less than 12 hours from the recording of this. And uh the humidity right now has

this. And uh the humidity right now has about 65%.

Like do we have a blast of dryness before we get the blast of wetness?

I think they'll probably actually even bump pretty well because the way that carcass is, I don't feel like we're going to get a ton of energy return out of them.

Also because of that adhesive nature clunk the need to bump is

it's like a it's like a 20% bump tire.

You barely give it. Yep.

Now, we can get I'm sure that foam, but take into account, let me get a little let me get a little

It's It's really quite well behaved for a tire with zero directionality. Left

side, right side, identical. Uh, and

they appear to the molds appear to be set up to where it says I think it says T1925 and then 180 degrees away from that it

says 475 4.75X 1.65X 1.9 and those are mirrored on both sides of the tire. So they keyed the

molds, ladies and gentlemen. They keyed

the molds.

Now we're gonna get them real.

I want to do a catch.

I didn't get a catch. They're so precise on a single stage foam. Look. Look at

that.

Oh yeah.

I'm waiting for them to be bad at something.

Ah, they are zippy.

Can Can I hit it again? Can we go two for two on that?

Oh, man. That's

That's really good on a self-righte for a single stage foam.

I can't I can't I can't get enough of the precision.

These are startlingly good. My expectations were,

startlingly good. My expectations were, well, now we have a slightly wider, slightly different layout format than what we've seen on, you know, the

Cllingon is like a junior baby rupture and the XHX pin is a, you know, it's a pin tire, right? This is going to do

better than both of those. it.

Unless it turns into circles of glass in wet, it's going to beat everything S5 we've tested so far.

I would go further to say that of the Endora offerings to date, these are the most scale in appearance.

Yeah, you can even in the chop. Even in

the chop and the mix, you can feel the the pull.

This is how we get them nice and loaded up. I want to pivot around.

up. I want to pivot around.

Oh man, this is not this is not just the best injury tire.

I don't know if there's a situation where I would ever have to get up to self to to to hand a got it to pick him up.

The precision is stupid. It makes no sense.

This level of control.

[snorts] I was seeing if you could flip that rock over and use it.

Get it. Get it. Grab it.

This is ridiculous.

out of the out of the bag.

Barring the mythical tires of yestery year in terms of a scale tire in size and appearance.

Let's just class two as it is broadly known.

This might be the best tire I've tested.

like these these are I I don't know maybe everything combined just perfectly.

These are perhaps unparalleled at their size.

There's really only two things standing between the mavericks with an X

and greatness, which is we drove through the real Dewey on the way back over here.

Trying to clear those.

Oh, I thought you had I thought Oh, you almost had it.

Look at the Look at the the pile building up down at the base.

That adhesive does pick up a bit. They

they've got to clean the faces off a little bit, but based on what I saw with a muddy, I have a I have a reasonable explan

expectation of them when they're one wet.

Gets a little unshapely.

Mavericks, you cannot have come this far and done this well on the card only to cough up all those points in surface

transition and wet of things that look like a pure scale tire. We are we're already up there into

tire. We are we're already up there into competing with stuff that costs a whole lot more than these.

Might take a couple passes to clean them. Let's see.

them. Let's see.

Right across the most difficult part.

Almost. Almost. Almost. Clear it. Clear

it. Clear it.

Got a little belly involvement there.

Can we reposition?

Okay. Swinging around. See if we got him. Let's see if we got them cleaned

him. Let's see if we got them cleaned down. They're still They're still

down. They're still They're still moderately loaded.

Ooh, slinging the mud.

All right. They're not they're not wet.

They're not wet killers. You know, some of some of the exotic elites. Uh, it

makes no difference to them if it's wet or dry.

They loaded about as much as anticipated. There was a little moment

anticipated. There was a little moment there. I don't know if the camera

there. I don't know if the camera captured that gave it some beans and it was just slinging muck out and then I

could feel the traction come back.

So, they do need to clear out a little.

See right there? But right here.

Pushing out. Pushing out. Pushing out.

Grab it. Grab it.

It kills me because I'm going to have to hit it with deductions here.

like the wet is not the wet isn't as good as it is at everything else. So that said, with a

everything else. So that said, with a mandatory reduction, this lands the Endora Mavericks

in reportedly in S5 compound at a yes, believe it when you hear it, 98.4

98.4 for putting it in a tie with the old 22 roy claw

one/10enth of a point behind the upgrade RC Razor wire which is a 5 in and the only 465475

tire above that on the leaderboard is the 6 KLR V2 Compspec with halos. The

6ix KLR V2 CompSP spec with halos as the combo. Four tires, four inserts, $130.

combo. Four tires, four inserts, $130.

Now, they are a 98.6 210. Uh, the

highest scoring tire on the on the board is a 99 plus and it goes big tire, big

tire, 525, big tire, huge tire, halos, huge tire, huge tire, 525, rupture, some

front razor. It's all big stuff. So up

front razor. It's all big stuff. So up

there beating out the 22 Baja Claw, the 525 Tusk LP, the Proline Hammer.

Th this is It is weighted. It is weighted because this tire did flawlessly

at a couple of like there was a couple of 99s and a couple deductions. So,

am I going to run out and replace all of my Tusks with these? No.

Am I going to continue to test these and buy another set or two? 100% at at

whatever they cost on the day.

If these are still at $30 a set, this is crazy town.

As I said, KLRV2 is up there at $130 for the set with halos.

These are like I I can't even I can't make heads nor tails of it. I

There's got to be something. There's got to be some drop.

something. There's got to be some drop.

I mean, they load up because they're so adhesive. They take a little bit to get

adhesive. They take a little bit to get clean. You can see a little bit of the

clean. You can see a little bit of the mud there. Corner frame. Um they're not

mud there. Corner frame. Um they're not the they're not stunners on wet. They're

pretty good. You got to apply some beans to them on wet. They didn't feel like any previously tested S5. I think all

the other S5s are in somewhere in the 97s, right at 97 or a little above.

Absolutely surprised by these. The

Endura Mavericks supposedly S5 compound feeling like a bizarre hybrid. Like

these feel like an RC four-wheel drive Mickey Thompson Baja MTZ in X and X2SS,

but even sharper. And the MTZ has kind of grown to be my favorite RC four-wheel drive tire.

These will require um further testing and evaluation because there's got there's got to be a flaw, right? There has to be a flaw

flaw, right? There has to be a flaw there. Uh first test in the future will

there. Uh first test in the future will be we'll see them with different inserts. We'll see them with the Canyon

inserts. We'll see them with the Canyon Custom in there and see how that shakes out. Do they get better? Do they get

out. Do they get better? Do they get worse? Does it manipulate the handling?
