Ladies and gentlemen and everyone in between, I want to ask you a question.
Who wins in an argument about music? A
person who has spent years in school learning how to sing and compose music at a professional level, had a full-on career in the past as an actual professional opera singer, built up an
audience of 461,000 subscribers on YouTube with over 1,900 videos under his belt. That guy versus a random Twitter account that slanders his
name. Which one wins? If you answered
name. Which one wins? If you answered the professional guy, you're wrong. This
is Twitter. The bigger you lie, the bigger the slander, the more effective the engagement. Common sense is not that
the engagement. Common sense is not that common. In fact, I don't think it ever
common. In fact, I don't think it ever exists in this platform. Proven,
especially as of late. What am I talking about, though, you may ask? Well, I'm
talking about the drama recently or around a week ago surrounding the content creator called Marco Meatball.
Why Meatball? Well, I don't know. Maybe
it's his favorite food. Or perhaps it is because he is bald. Marco is a person with over 461,000 subscribers in his YouTube channel. He
has been doing this for a long time too, explaining and analyzing why video game music works the way it does. Unlike a
lot of YouTuber reactor nowadays, he actually goes in depth with his music reactions. He doesn't just say a song
reactions. He doesn't just say a song cooks and labels it the best of all time for no reason. He tells you in detail why the notes and the instruments make you feel a certain way. But who cares
about your resume and background when you don't pair with the popular opinion?
So all of that professional expertise was ignored and then he got dogpiled on Twitter because he dared speak his mind.
But before we get into the rage baits and the slander, if you find these kinds of videos entertaining or educational in some way, feel free to like the video and subscribe. A surprising amount of
and subscribe. A surprising amount of people watch my videos without subscribing, even though they watch most of my videos. And now without wasting more of your time, let's put some sense into the nonsense. So where did this
actually start? You would be surprised
actually start? You would be surprised to hear the answer because it didn't start with some hot takes that in reality are just stupid or even rage bait of any degree. It actually started with a celebration or well it's supposed
to be a celebration. We got a post from Popbase, an account that basically tracks everything happening in pop culture or you know so they say. They
posted the stats for the most streamed China based artists in the US for the year 2025. It shows right there that
year 2025. It shows right there that Hoyo Mix completely framemog the competition. Sorry for using Gen Z
competition. Sorry for using Gen Z slang. I meant it completely destroyed
slang. I meant it completely destroyed the competition. The gap between the
the competition. The gap between the first and the second place was over 24 million streams. I mean don't even talk about the gap between the third on the list. It is absolutely brutal. I mean as
list. It is absolutely brutal. I mean as a fandom logically they would just celebrate it, right? Like god damn. At
least something from our game is worth being happy about, right? W got impact strikes again. But for some reason,
strikes again. But for some reason, someone decided to quote tweet that happy news, saying, "But Marco Cockball says that Natland music is shallow sobbing emoji and attached a screenshot
about it, too." Obviously cropped, obviously taken out of context, but we'll get into it later. Right. The
cropped screenshot is from an old apology post Marco made back in 2025.
Imagine that, a year ago, and somebody is salty enough to bring it back a year later because someone dared to criticize Genshin Impact. It is the legendary
Genshin Impact. It is the legendary status boss of unemployment. I don't
think this guy even qualifies to flip burgers. So, I guess this is what he's
burgers. So, I guess this is what he's doing in his free time. Like, look at the people he had to deal with, right?
This is one of the most liked comments from the drama post that started it all.
His opinion for music has became somewhat very subjective and biased.
Like, read that again. And like, does this make sense to you? Doesn't it sound like absurd? Calling an opinion
like absurd? Calling an opinion subjective is like saying water is wet.
Oh, fork found in kitchen. What? Now,
obviously because the poster refuses to elaborate or give any sort of factual context, I searched up the video and watched it myself and surprise surprise, his reaction to the not cry symphony.
The numbers tell a very different reality than the narrative they are spinning on Twitter. The video had 11,000 likes and only 183 dislikes. Very
tiny fraction. Looks like the people who actually sat down and watched the video didn't have a problem with it.
manufactured overblown outrage from Hoyo Twitter once again. Are we surprised? I
hope not. This is a reoccurring theme. I
mean, look at the post. Classic rage
bait. They took a small piece of a story and cutting out everything else to change the meaning and make someone look bad. And now people are calling him
bad. And now people are calling him racist because he said a Genshin song is shallow. Isn't that absurd? They just
shallow. Isn't that absurd? They just
selectively labboize the fact about his 91 videos of straight up praise for Genshin Impact. Oh, but it doesn't fit
Genshin Impact. Oh, but it doesn't fit the story they want to tell right now.
So, I'm just going to completely ignore it and push my own agenda here. Your
history doesn't matter, brothers and sisters and siblings. You are only as good as your last opinion. And if that opinion isn't a glowing review, the community will make you a villain one
way or another to invalidate your criticism. Earlier, I said that I
criticism. Earlier, I said that I watched the video for myself. And what
did I find? Well, we got to start with my statement that I think the whole shallow criticism was widely misinterpreted. The reality is that
misinterpreted. The reality is that Marco isn't just some random guy with a microphone. He is a random guy with a
microphone. He is a random guy with a microphone and a classically trained opera singer studying vocal performance and music theory. I mean, all you got to do is watch any of his videos. When he
is reacting to a video game music, he is deconstructing the piece, breaking it down bit by bit, and the videos are actually pretty easy to consume, even if you're not a massive music fanatic as he
is. for the video in question. He was
is. for the video in question. He was
actually incredibly impressed with the orchestra. I got to learn a new stuff
orchestra. I got to learn a new stuff from it, too. Like, he broke down the techniques used in the piece. He called
it entrancing and even mentioned getting a full body goosebumps from the angelic quality of the vocals. He pointed out the Celtic orchestration, meaning music that uses styles or instruments from
places like Scotland or Ireland, the places that I didn't know exist before.
Like, he really broke it down for me.
So, what part of it was shallow, right?
like it seems like a lot of glazing for me. Well, in the video he said that he
me. Well, in the video he said that he really likes this particular style of Ginchin music. It feels like it's a
Ginchin music. It feels like it's a return to a style that he likes a lot. A
style that I assume didn't exist in Natlin. He states that they were good,
Natlin. He states that they were good, but he didn't feel like it moved him to a deeper feeling of emotion and thoughts. It's really nice to revisit
thoughts. It's really nice to revisit Genchin's music. I really like this
Genchin's music. I really like this particular style of Genchin music. Um,
this feels Yeah, this feels really good. This feels
like a like a return to something that I like a lot. Uh it's not to say I didn't enjoy the Notlam pieces I listened to. I
did, but they felt um they felt a little I don't know shallow to me when I listened to them. Like they were good, but they weren't I I did I didn't feel like they were seismic or that they like
moved me to like a like a deeper feeling of emotion and thought. So from my understanding, compared to the other pieces Genshin has put out like the pieces made by Yupang Chen or the Notcry
Orchestra, Natland music felt shallow.
And I think that's the elaboration he's trying to say but didn't make Can you just imagine just someone saying
no no why no don't do this the way that with the the strings no please no don't no don't that's the the vibe I feel immediately so from that
point of view it was most certainly not an attack on the cultures the music represented he is literally just giving his opinion not every music Genshin makes is peak if Everything is peak,
then nothing is peak. If everyone is super, then no one will be. I mean,
that's just the truth. Unfortunately to
Marco, Natland music is just not the same level compared to the other musical pieces Genshin made. The best Genchin music could reach emotional depth so deep that when Natan music is compared to it, it feels shallow. And I think
that's a reasonable take. You don't have to agree with it, but music is all about subjectivity. Something good to me can
subjectivity. Something good to me can be bad to you and vice versa. But the
meta of the internet right now is to intentionally ignore the truth to make an argument look better because sticking to facts is boring and fire is hot and I love hot stuff. So the people took a
critique of a musical piece and turned it into a moral failing even going so far as to call him racist. A massive
leap in logic as always by the best fandom in the whole wide world. The
irony is that these people had to use selective hearing to stay mad or rather selective reading. They just ignored the
selective reading. They just ignored the 90% of the video where he was praising glazing the theme music and focused entirely on like 1 second out of a 20-minute video. It didn't matter that
20-minute video. It didn't matter that he spends most of the video completely geeking his mind out over technical terms that we have never heard of before. Probably you dare say a bad word
before. Probably you dare say a bad word towards my multi-billion dollar nuclear reactor owning company. I must kill you.
Like it's just crazy, isn't it? And the
people start calling him a shell. You
know, they love using this word to describe anyone who has a nice thing to say about a competitor, right? As if
Marco is secretly being paid to promote a product. If Marco is a shell for Wooa,
a product. If Marco is a shell for Wooa, well, he is doing a pretty bad job at it. Like, if you just look at his
it. Like, if you just look at his channel, Marco has over 90 videos dedicated to the music of Genshin Impact. And if you look into it, most if
Impact. And if you look into it, most if not all of his videos about it are wellreceived, breaking down the music for the laymen. and I haven't seen any that is like completely destroying
Genshin or something. Beyond that,
what's surprising is Marco is not even a gotacha YouTuber. He spent most of his
gotacha YouTuber. He spent most of his time analyzing the soundtracks for actual games like Final Fantasy, Balders Gate 3. My favorite were his Expedition
Gate 3. My favorite were his Expedition 33 videos, and he actually made a cover of it, too. And it shows like his interest is in the music itself, not the gacha tribalism we are constantly
having, right? And I don't doubt it if
having, right? And I don't doubt it if he ever were to say that Gacha is probably the most toxic fandom he has stepped into. Like bro is just doing
stepped into. Like bro is just doing what he likes and this is what he gets in return. His opinions have actually
in return. His opinions have actually been very consistent as well. He hasn't
stopped liking Ginshin music. He
recently called Colina's theme divine and he still ranks the Scaramoosh boss music as top tier. He isn't
anti-genshin. He is just someone who values complexity and emotional depth.
and he is just honest enough, true to himself that if a track doesn't have it, he's going to say so. Like, if you remember back then when Withering Waves first launched, Marco was actually one of the first people to call it out. He
said the music was disappointing and that it lacked depth. This game uh is sort of devoid of music or certainly music that is uh
inspiring. Uh it's not to say that it's
inspiring. Uh it's not to say that it's bad music, it's just sort of there. Um,
which is sort of a bummer because Punishing Grey Raven has one of the coolest soundtracks that I've listened to. Real shills don't usually start
to. Real shills don't usually start their relationship with a company by telling everyone the product is a letdown. And the explanation was
letdown. And the explanation was well-made and comprehensive that people mostly agree with him. And let's be honest, Marco doesn't even like the monetization in these games. Like these
gambling polls. Yay, spend $800 for a single character that will get power in three patches type of monetization. He
has been very clear that he hates those systems in both titles. But I guess people are just so incredibly parasocial that it only hurts when it's targeted towards their favorite game. Don't hurt
my billiondollar company. Jesus, that's
so cringe. Thankfully though, the internet hates no longer phases Marco.
He is like built different now. I guess
somebody called him Marco Cogball. And
instead of getting defensive or whatnot, Bro just called it hilarious. I mean, he is right. I mean, this looks like a
is right. I mean, this looks like a 12-year-old loser drama. Marco treated
this quite sternly, which I love from him. It is a healthy change from his
him. It is a healthy change from his older responses. He is no longer asking
older responses. He is no longer asking for permission to have an opinion. And
finally, to end off the drama, he touched on a very simple philosophy. You
can't have the sunshine without the rain. You can't have the good parts
rain. You can't have the good parts without the bad parts. That is just life. He says that he gets to live a
life. He says that he gets to live a wonderful life. He gets to talk about
wonderful life. He gets to talk about music and games for a living. Getting
called racist by someone random probably doesn't feel too good, but that's just life. It is what it is, and I'm proud of
life. It is what it is, and I'm proud of him, really. He's doing great and I'm
him, really. He's doing great and I'm rooting for the best for him. Watching
this play out like remember back then in 2025 people were calling him soft. He
spent a lot of time explaining himself and apologizing for something in my opinion he shouldn't have said sorry for. And now fast forward to 2026 he is
for. And now fast forward to 2026 he is firm. He has realized that for some
firm. He has realized that for some people the truth doesn't actually matter. They just want someone to throw
matter. They just want someone to throw stoves at. And if they're going to throw
stoves at. And if they're going to throw stones he might as well keep enjoying his luxury while they waste their time.
At the end of the day, the whole situation isn't really just about one guy who happens to be incredibly good at explaining music and people disagreeing with him. It is about how Gacha fandoms
with him. It is about how Gacha fandoms have developed this all or nothing demand. In these spaces, you are either
demand. In these spaces, you are either a total worshipper of a game without ever questioning it or you're a racist, misinformation, agenda pushing, lying, grifting shill, and there is no middle
ground anymore. There is no desire to
ground anymore. There is no desire to understand nuances like in this context where you can appreciate the hard work that went into a song while still thinking the final result is a bit
shallow. But for a certain type of fan,
shallow. But for a certain type of fan, if you're not 100% on their team, you must be executed. When these people hunt professional critics just because they didn't give a 10 out of 10 to every
single track, we lose the very thing that makes the music worth talking about. It's artistic death, the
about. It's artistic death, the complexity and the layers of meaning that make a piece of music more than just some background elevator music.
Marco is going to be fine, right? He's
going to keep living his life playing games and analyzing music for the people who actually want to learn something.
Meanwhile, the people who spent their time dragging his old post will just move on to the next target, stripping the nuance, remove the surrounding facts to make them look like a villain for a few hundred likes or a few thousand
views. Let me know what you think in the
views. Let me know what you think in the comments below. But that is all from me,
comments below. But that is all from me, Glaive Kio, and I will see you in the next one. Cheers.
next one. Cheers.
