A gunman in the US state of Louisiana has shot and killed eight children in what police have described as a domestic violence incident. Officers say the

violence incident. Officers say the attacks took place in three homes in the city of Shreveport. The children who died were between the age of 1 and 14

years old. Police say some of them were

years old. Police say some of them were related to the gunman who was killed by police after he tried to flee by stealing a car.

The BBC's Tom Simmons has more.

This is the worst mass shooting for 2 years in the United States. Deeply

disturbing for this community because those who lost their lives were all children and highly unusual because this appears to be a domestic incident.

Police trying to make sense of it focused on two houses close to each other in the south of Shreveport where shots were fired. Seven children were located inside that were deceased. There

was an additional deceased child that looked like he had a tried to escape the residence out the back on the roof. This

is a large operation. We have three crime scenes just here in Shreveport.

One of them is is incredibly gruesome in nature and it's going to take several hours to to process.

They're examining the shooter's links to both houses but say they believe some of the victims were his children. Two

adults were also injured. He then

hijacked a car not far from here and fired at police who pursued him out of the city before shooting him dead.

There were gasps from local people as the news spread today.
