China China China.
Now you know the biggest industry events we have in Australia in terms of renewables, smart energy, all energy.
But I walked [music] into SNEC and within about 30 seconds I realized those events are a corner shop. This year is a huge big supermarket. This was [music] a
city. Eight massive exhibition halls,
city. Eight massive exhibition halls, each one several times larger than anything we have back at home. I've been
warned it would be big. Nothing prepared
me for what I actually saw. And what
surprised me most wasn't just the size of it all, it was how well it was run.
500,000 people moving about, no queues, no chaos, no overcrowding, no waiting for food, no squeezing into the lift. The
whole thing operated like clockwork. And
that told me something straight away.
These are not small operations. These
are not backyard manufacturers. These
are some of the most sophisticated energy companies on the planet.
Presented by Your Energy Answers.
So in the past, like a lot of people in the West, I kept [music] China at arm's length. And then my son got involved.
length. And then my son got involved.
Too much TikTok, I say. He [music] says, "We need to be at SNEC. It's the biggest renewable energy event on Earth." So we packed our bags, my business partner Lena, Katie, and [music] my son Ethan.
So in two decades in this industry, I never once set foot [music] into China.
Not on business and not on holidays.
Never. Until now. And I wanted to see it with my own eyes, no fillers, no agenda.
Three days at SNEC, the largest solar and battery show on the planet. And what
I found, it just genuinely shocked me.
It's huge!
I'm overwhelmed, guys. I'm just coming into SNEC. The whole world is here. I
into SNEC. The whole world is here. I
mean, look at the numbers.
I'm going to get lost from my group. I
got to go. So what are you guys here for? Is it just to say hi to existing
for? Is it just to say hi to existing customers or is it actually winning new accounts?
No, it's to win new accounts as well.
So, the whole world meets here. So,
we've got people from our entire global team. We'll have customers from around
team. We'll have customers from around the world. So, there's all different
the world. So, there's all different problems for solar and storage no matter where the market is. Some of the markets are high altitude, some are low altitude. We've got products for both.
altitude. We've got products for both.
Now, do you actually go also to other stands to have a bit of a spy what others bringing out?
Oh, man. I couldn't comment on something like that.
[laughter] Sure, a few eyes get to thrown around.
Now, as I walk around, I see a lot of people taking photos of each other's product. And maybe those kind of
product. And maybe those kind of constant watching each other is really what forces innovation.
So, the industry was dominated by all Europeans in the early days. And now
look at it. There's our Aussie bloke, Steve Bloom. So, these are the people
Steve Bloom. So, these are the people who run the show, the big bosses.
They're all getting their little picture up. You look too young to be the boss.
up. You look too young to be the boss.
Obviously, you see an industry that is growing a lot. And especially with the batteries now coming through in Australia. In lots of other countries,
Australia. In lots of other countries, that's not the case yet.
Australia actually is a a good reference for other countries as well.
If there's one thing Australia is leading China in, is it Not only China, it's leading the world.
But, we don't know that because we don't go to all the world. I didn't know Australia is that far ahead.
Yeah. I'm a big fan of your videos.
seriously? You've seen them?
I've seen many of them.
Which country you're in?
Uh Yemen.
You're in Yemen and you're watching my Australian videos.
Absolutely, yeah.
All right.
Like I've seen all of your RV videos for going all through Australia, checking all the brands, how they work, what's their capacity. I like them so much.
their capacity. I like them so much.
This is not a setup, you know, us by the way.
[laughter] I'm coughing my heart out.
You know how America was always thought that they were then the number one in the world.
Yeah.
And China [music] is coming, and they got more engineers, they're building more high-speed rail, they're dominating the solar [music] industry.
Yeah.
Can they just become friends and You don't need to fight each other to be top one. Because wars are very
top one. Because wars are very expensive. I've seen it first hand in
expensive. I've seen it first hand in Yemen. It destroys [music] the whole
Yemen. It destroys [music] the whole economy and and nobody wins in in a war.
Nobody wins.
Get renewable to bridge the gaps, bring the countries [music] together, and for once I'm hearing Australia's leading.
Lot of countries look to Australia [music] as how we did it and then improve on that.
Yes.
Well, thank you.
And as soon as I walk in, there's two big brands and we know them both in Australia. One is Solax, but then
Australia. One is Solax, but then there's Huawei. I don't see a difference
there's Huawei. I don't see a difference between Huawei and many of the other Chinese brands, but somebody pissed somebody off. We never know what they
somebody off. We never know what they would have done in Australia. It's
interesting some of the people that seem to have worked in Huawei a lot ended up coming to Australia via Seek.
Now, just look at that. Look at the size of that Solax stand. You see, that's what I've come to China for. Kind of
sexy, but also a little bit scary, isn't it? Is there maybe one day no more room
it? Is there maybe one day no more room for the humans? I think in Australia a lot of people don't realize how big Solax is in China.
The first public listed company 2024 in this industry. We have been in this
this industry. We have been in this industry 14 years. You can see there. We
are one of the few who can offer a 10-year warranty and who can honor a 10-year warranty.
You speak English? Are you the balcony solar expert?
Yes, but I only responsible for the German market.
[clears throat] Ah, I've just been to Germany and I saw a lot of balcony solar.
People who renting, they're using it in the apartment, isn't it?
In Europe is balcony, garage, or the garden.
It's a good solution for renters, but it's illegal. So, usually we are ahead
it's illegal. So, usually we are ahead of Europe and in this case Europe has it all around the place and we're still asleep on that particular wheel.
Are you from Germany?
Yes.
Your German is very good. Did you just learn with a German boyfriend or the job?
[music] [laughter] [music] She kind of one day kind of on the social media picked up the German men are really strong and so she decided I'm going to learn German. I'll find a
company. I go to Germany. I work there
company. I go to Germany. I work there and I double check if this is true.
[laughter] So I'm running here into Fronius at the Solax stand. Are you seriously looking
Solax stand. Are you seriously looking at the large scale solutions? What do
you like about it?
It's easier to install. The inverters
are getting bigger. The integration is better. They're just making it simpler
better. They're just making it simpler from an install perspective.
Well, that's why they say, "Relax. It's
a Solax."
They do say relax. It's a Solax.
Come on. Get a shot. I cannot believe you. You couldn't buy your own socks.
you. You couldn't buy your own socks.
[laughter] Oh yeah, of course. This is what travelers need. A suitcase here. See,
travelers need. A suitcase here. See,
you can bring that back for your kids.
How good is that? I'm like a wife. I
only want one diamond ring. By the end it's five. You're You're stretching it.
it's five. You're You're stretching it.
[laughter] What is the market in Kenya for solar batteries?
The cost of electricity from the grid is is high.
How much in US dollar cents?
US dollar cents that will be 0.28.
So that's about 40 something cents. That
is expensive.
So solar in the right kind of area you would have maybe a three or four year payback. Is it? How many years?
payback. Is it? How many years?
Two years.
Oh my god, how easy is that to sell? You
know when I started to sell solar it was a 15 year payback.
And that was like 40 years ago.
[laughter] Solar was expensive then.
It was only 20. Don't make me that old, okay?
[laughter] Okay.
And now, is this your first time here?
No, this is like my third time in China.
So has it changed a lot in the many years?
Changes every time I come I see something new.
As you can see electricity bills aren't just stinging in Australia because of power prices. Supply charges have become
power prices. Supply charges have become a real problem lately, too. Some
households are now paying close to $3 a day just to stay connected to the grid, and it's worth checking if you're not overpaying. Check out Automize Energy.
overpaying. Check out Automize Energy.
Simply authorize access to your usage data, and they'll compare your actual electricity use against the plans available in your area to find one that will save you real money. They're
completely independent. They're not
getting paid a commission by some energy retailer. Better still, they monitor
retailer. Better still, they monitor your plans. So, if a better plan becomes
your plans. So, if a better plan becomes available in the future, they will let you know. So, Google Automize Energy, or
you know. So, Google Automize Energy, or just click in the link below. Now, back
to Snag.
I mean, we've got all these Chinese foods here, and then there's a KFC, and you know, I'm I'm just wondering if uh Westerners Westerners go in there and have the familiar food.
Ooh, look at all the food, Lena. So much
choice. I mean, it's always a bit of a lotto when you get out. Am I in the right place? Did you just notice that,
right place? Did you just notice that, guys? Having a good little snooze.
guys? Having a good little snooze.
He's gone.
[music] Gonski.
Solar panels. Solar panels. No idea what they do. Looks like some lamination
they do. Looks like some lamination machine. Look at everybody standing
machine. Look at everybody standing here.
[laughter] Looking where the different stands could be. 15% I know.
be. 15% I know.
Others I've never heard of. And then, of course, [music] the ones in Chinese characters.
No idea what they mean.
Stop standing on my stand.
I made it to China, mate.
How you doing?
We are very impressed with the country.
I'm trying to do an insurance claim on my stuff. I leave it behind. They look
my stuff. I leave it behind. They look
after me and give it back. But, is there a product here that we will not have in the Australia in the future, but we're not having it right now?
This one. I mean, the whole point of this show is generation four. Uh so,
we're basically revealing to you what's happening in 2027. Look at the power for that weight. So, it's got the best power
that weight. So, it's got the best power to weight ratio for a double glass. Uh
but that's really the hero number. So,
this number here, what it means is you can fit more on the roof. It means more charging for Australian families. So,
that's what it means.
You go over to the top con players, and they're going to show you why top con is better than back contact. And then you get here, and you show that the ABC technology is better than the top con. I
think one day in Australia, we should run a test and actually see what the real output data is.
Where did you learn the Chinese?
In Brisbane, yeah.
Yeah? You had a Chinese girlfriend or something?
No, we had a guy called Kevin Rudd in charge of education at the time.
Can you talk Chinese to me?
[laughter] So, let's see if you can copy that with me. Did you say xie xie?
me. Did you say xie xie?
Xie xie.
I think that's pretty good. I think
that's good. Second most important word is beer, pijiou.
Okay, okay. Hang on, give me I've got to build it up, the courage.
Pijiou.
Yes, that's very good.
Now, but I mean you know you should say ni hao.
Ni hao. What about ni hao ma? What does
that mean?
That means are you good? So, thank you very much, Max, for coming along. Xie
xie.
Xie xie.
What are you doing? Are you singing?
You see, I haven't got the nicest looking face, so I try to get the attention away from my face to the microphone.
It's working.
Yeah, yeah.
Where you from?
I'm French.
Vous parlez français?
français aussi.
I had a girlfriend once in Paris.
one.
Um she lived in Maisons-Laffitte.
Maisons-Laffitte, beautiful.
And you've got nice things to say about the Aiko panel?
The ratio, efficiency, price ratio is excellent with Aiko.
Our roofs in Europe are not that big, but we need as much output. The sun is not that bright, so you want the biggest bang for buck out of the roof. And
they're not double the price.
Yeah, what? 10%? 12%? It's worth it.
If the girl is 10% prettier and only 1% more in price, you're going for it, for sure.
[laughter] I don't know if we're allowed to do these jokes anymore. Our generation did those jokes.
We are what we are, right?
get censored now. Anyway, you're a Frenchman. You You live by, you know,
Frenchman. You You live by, you know, your love and your passion.
It's the only thing WE HAVE LEFT.
[laughter] HAVE A GREAT SHOW, GUYS.
THANK YOU. HELLO, I'M JUST LOOKING. I'm
not spying on anything. I'm just trying to work out what you guys selling. And I
have a lolly.
Okay. Okay.
Thank you.
Thank you. Ta-ta.
Pushing in. Pushing in.
You got to You can't be polite here. If you're
polite, you get stuffed.
A Perovskite tandem module, but you get 907 W according to Trina. Unbelievable
number.
Coming to a house or commercial install near you.
I just keep on bumping into Aussies. Got
Michael Wrighton with me from Excel Power. Is this your first time at SNEC?
Power. Is this your first time at SNEC?
No, I came with that probably 11 or 12 years ago.
What's your first impression of China as a whole?
I think the West has been given a totally different perception of what China is capable of and what they're doing now. I just can't believe the
doing now. I just can't believe the amount of electric cars here in Shanghai. I think it It's very hard to
Shanghai. I think it It's very hard to spot a car with a blue number plate. As
you know, in Shanghai, any any EV car is a green number plate, and that's all you seem to see. Visited quite a few of their factories. It was all automated.
their factories. It was all automated.
It was clean. It was organized. It was
efficient.
I mean, they do bring that bloody slavery issue up occasionally for the working. I can't see where the slavery
working. I can't see where the slavery comes in when that's all automated.
Yeah, you wonder where those sort of conversations are coming from, but How do you feel that our perception, how the media plays and presents China to what the real impression is?
I think if a war breaks out, I'm going to learn to speak Chinese, I think.
[laughter] And this is from an old Queenslander.
Where you from? Which country?
Originally, we are from Ukraine.
Well, there's a whole story to be told.
I came directly to this stand just to see new products of SEG because we're looking for storage systems. You know, war in Ukraine shows that greed is good,
but if it's available. If it's not available, everybody should do something to provide power to the houses, to the manufacturing.
It's interesting. I mean, the whole Ukraine conflict actually tells you that you've got to look after yourself a little bit more. You can't just expect it to come from far away. So, that's a good lesson to learn. Thank you so much.
So, we're kind of more in the supplier hall. You can see all that behind us,
hall. You can see all that behind us, all the various components that go into an inverter and all that. Some of these stands look like it's relatively cheap gear.
Maybe one that wouldn't even withstand up to Australian standards, but we've got to understand China supplies all around the world. And what we feel is a normal fair price point of 30 bucks for a safety switch. No, no, no, I might I
can buy this and that. So, there's a lot of haggling going on, different price points for different countries. And I
suppose Australia is very lucky that we can insist literally on the highest quality, because for some companies and countries especially, just that it works for a while is possibly good enough.
ran into my cell and he's from Germany, but he has been in China for how many years?
Nine years, but I don't think so. We
come from automotive industry, but we also have a sector for energy's market. And my field of
energy's market. And my field of application is automation.
Are you finding the attitude to getting things done is difference between German and and China?
Day night, day night. What I can realize in 10 weeks is a a quick test setup would take me in Europe or Germany way longer. In Germany, I'm German,
longer. In Germany, I'm German, we develop we develop till it's perfect.
Till it's perfect, but we maybe miss the moment to bring it on the market. And
here it's more like experience, even if it's not perfect, at least we are on something and you already start to promote. And I think here is the
promote. And I think here is the difference.
So, any regrets being in China and have you seen a lot of changes?
I've seen changes, but only to the better. Only to the better.
better. Only to the better.
But you know how they say, "Oh, in China you got all the CCTVs and you can't even throw a bin a rubbish into the bin and they're going to follow you home and all that." Is that true or is that all
that." Is that true or is that all I'm free. I'm free. I'm more free than
I'm free. I'm free. I'm more free than in Europe.
Oh, really?
I believe so. I believe so.
You're living it every day.
I have a easy life. I don't feel observed.
No, really. I don't mind. I don't mind.
Interesting perspective. Have a good day.
Thank you. Thank you very much. Cheers.
Wow, this is the your energy answers colors. Maybe we
can ask him to borrow the stand for another time. This is backing sheets for solar
time. This is backing sheets for solar panels. So, I mean, you're not just
panels. So, I mean, you're not just getting the manufacturers here. You get
the suppliers of all the products. So,
every piece of a solar panel, the framing, the glass, they're all manufacturers here offering that. S A J, let's say hooray.
[laughter] You're from which country?
From Brazil.
In the olden days, early 2016 would have been a lot of Europeans. They've been
pushed out a bit by the Chinese in Australia. What about Brazil? Same
Australia. What about Brazil? Same
thing?
No, Brazil we start already with the Chinese brands. So, probably Australia
Chinese brands. So, probably Australia started like 10 years before Brazil. We
take Australia as a as a reference in every discussion we have. What is Australia doing? You know, you are you know, 5 to
doing? You know, you are you know, 5 to 10 years ahead of what where we are.
Australia is very much in that kind of US corner of the world powers.
No, Brazil tries to be very neutral in that space and not to to fight against one or another. We are very large country and we have ties with you know,
both sides. So, we try to
both sides. So, we try to to keep that that stable as long as possible.
Maybe we can come to your country to learn something about that.
That would be a pleasure to host you.
[laughter] Ah, GCL. So, that's a big brand that
Ah, GCL. So, that's a big brand that came to Australia. Sold quite a few.
They gave a long warranty and then they disappeared. But, they're still
disappeared. But, they're still obviously going here well and they possibly pulled a lot of money out of Australia. Which country you're from?
Australia. Which country you're from?
We are from the Netherlands.
Yeah, I mean, you're obviously working maybe with European manufacturers and factories, too. If you would describe
factories, too. If you would describe China in a short description, how would you describe it?
Yeah, think it's quite extreme what's happening here and it's the quality is is is going up rapidly. With most of the projects we can we can more easily deliver when the production is in China than in Europe. And you see that it's
harder now for European manufacturers to to survive. It's going so quickly here.
to survive. It's going so quickly here.
So new newest technology, newest type of cells is developing extremely quickly.
So we don't have 15 minutes discussion before we decide what what exit we're using.
I think it's here maybe a few seconds or [laughter] I've got a feeling that maybe it's only a few seconds.
Now this looks like the most sophisticated robot that we have seen at this show. Very sophisticated robot.
this show. Very sophisticated robot.
Except this is a human pretending to be a robot.
I had to use a toilet and they're still got the old style what we call in Germany Plumpsklo. And the reason why
Germany Plumpsklo. And the reason why they call it Plumpsklo is because it makes plump. You know how you can tell
makes plump. You know how you can tell the Aussies?
At at 12:00 they got the Guinness in their hand.
It's all for customer relations, you know?
[laughter] First time at SNEC?
Yes, first time at SNEC.
Yeah, are you like me, like sensory overload?
It's just insane. The scale of it is just massive. Just trying to find
just massive. Just trying to find anything.
I think I could offer any of the Aussie guys $10,000 for the deal to go to every stand in 3 days and I'll never lose my money. No. Maybe in one of those really
money. No. Maybe in one of those really fast scooters.
Yeah, yeah.
I tell you you can talk with the best of them, can't you?
[laughter] But in the solar industry that actually makes you successful.
Correct.
Correct. [laughter]
That's why that's why I mate with this guy, RIGHT HERE.
DO you know where SEG and GoodWe are or not?
There's a little thing in the middle everybody walks over it and you got to push the Chinese people out of the way and then finally you can find the stand where you're looking for.
He races.
[laughter] On first impression I thought you were a bit of a but now I like you.
[laughter] Oh, thank you.
Oh, there's a flower store.
How in Australia would you leave your stand alone and just walk away and all this stuff is sitting there? The honesty
factor, and I'm not sure if that's because people have better character or because they know they're going to be in deep trouble if they do anything bad.
But they just leave all the things here.
Unbelievable. Oh, yeah, look. Now I know why it's all here. Have a look what's right up behind. [laughter]
It'd be the Great Wall of China. We
can't get back. Used to be open. We're
here with Huey. Huey installs in Brazil.
What's the price of electricity in Brazil per kilowatt hour?
One real.
Right.
For a watt kilowatt hour.
All right, so it's about 20 cents. Okay,
we worked it all out. How would I tell you that in Australia in peak time we now charge 60 cents more than two real.
More than two real?
Oh, it's so so so expensive.
Have you been to China many times before?
No, this is our first time.
What's your first impression about China?
I'm impressed. China is
many years in front of us in Brazil.
And Huey really enjoyed this trip because he was able to bring his wife along. We can't
see her. She's on the other side of the camera. So you're you're the boss in
camera. So you're you're the boss in your family with your wife's permission.
[laughter] Yes. So
Yes. So Oh, the dreaded electricity prices.
Remember Automise Energy, they give you a comparison so you can find the cheapest plan, especially now that supply charges have really gone up. Go
and check it out. What have you got to lose? Automise Energy, Google it, click
lose? Automise Energy, Google it, click in the link below, or alternatively, just leave it as is and pay a higher electricity bill. Back to snake.
electricity bill. Back to snake.
I meet so many Brazilians.
Yes.
And they're all good-looking.
Yeah, and you're a GOOD LIAR.
YEAH.
[laughter] FIRST TIME IN CHINA OR MANY TIMES?
Second time in China.
What's your first impression?
China is 50 years in front of us.
In Brazil, sometimes we hear some like, "No, you're not going to be uh something like that. You're going to be afraid of
like that. You're going to be afraid of the food and you're going to to be afraid of every time that you walk in the street."
the street." the cameras?
But I mean, it's okay because we are we're feeling safe. In Brazil, sometimes we cannot walk in the street because you feel like you're going to be mugged all the time and you are.
You You wish you had a few more cameras, is it?
Yeah.
[laughter] Oh, there is a famous Australian person.
Let me give him a surprise.
Because you're in China, nobody will rob you. Because if they rob you, they know
you. Because if they rob you, they know it's through CCTV where they're going.
So, you are absolutely safe. You're
running so many Aussies here. You can't
avoid them. Are you following me? Are
you?
Yeah, I'm nice.
[laughter] You can't get away from me.
No, actually I followed you. What are
you here for in Snake?
So, there's two things. One is to really support the members of the Smart Energy Council. I'm the international envoy of
Council. I'm the international envoy of the Smart Energy Council these days. So,
if we can give them a boost, that's a good thing. And secondly, we're looking
good thing. And secondly, we're looking to accelerate the deployment in the Asia Pacific region. So, linking with
Pacific region. So, linking with companies to really deploy faster.
Interesting, I spoke to a guy from uh Nigeria. I spoke guy from Yemen, uh
Nigeria. I spoke guy from Yemen, uh Ukraine, all sorts of different countries. And the one thing was is
countries. And the one thing was is we're looking at Australia because you guys are ahead of the curve.
So, not only is Australia the number one market for batteries in the world, we're we're about 10 times bigger than the next market, which is Germany. So, as a global player, we're put punching way above our weight. Means we're learning
things in the Australian market people haven't even thought of in the rest of the world, which actually means for our business as an innovators, that's a great market opportunity to take their expertise and actually export it to other countries.
The other thing is what I'm finding about China, you know, I looked at the air quality, all the stuff we hear in Australia. The common saying from people
Australia. The common saying from people is extremely friendly, helpful, very efficient. You know, not only that, but
efficient. You know, not only that, but young Chinese people are super proud of their country. [music]
their country. [music] What they've done in terms of their systems has been really impressive. You
can You can catch a high-speed train from here to Suzhou. You know, it's 150 km. It'll take you about 20 minutes on
km. It'll take you about 20 minutes on the high-speed train, and it'll cost you about $4. The distance between policy
about $4. The distance between policy intent [music] and implementation is easy in the Chinese system. It's not
easy in our system, but there's certainly a lot that we can learn from what China does.
China places a team but national interests [music] and perhaps an Australian team, right?
Yeah, but Australia we we seem to cut our politics now into even more single little slices. It's very hard to find a
little slices. It's very hard to find a team right at the moment. Without
getting it too far into politics, [music] but you know what I'm talking about.
a shame, mate. That's a shame.
I'm just walking into the clinic she stand. I look up and bloody who is that
stand. I look up and bloody who is that ugly bloke? And he's even got the same
ugly bloke? And he's even got the same shirt. I mean, it just shows I don't
shirt. I mean, it just shows I don't have many shirts. I made it for Sneak.
How good is that? Now, obviously, many people have heard about this brand in Australia. Wow, it is a big stand. It is
Australia. Wow, it is a big stand. It is
popular. Sneak, I done the calculation in the last 12 months would have pulled about $1 billion out of the Australian market through the rebate. So, of
course, you can put a big stand up when you make good money in our little country. Which country you from?
country. Which country you from?
From the UK.
You got the cold weather. Does it help the battery with the technology? Because
some of the batteries in the cold weather they die in the backside.
Mot seg energy, you know, we have a heating parts inside of the battery pack. This is helping with the cold
pack. This is helping with the cold weather. It's IP66, so it can be
weather. It's IP66, so it can be installed outside. No problem.
installed outside. No problem.
Now, I can hear a little bit of an accent. So, where did you live before
accent. So, where did you live before the UK?
I am born and raised in Bulgaria, but moved and living in the UK now.
And selling Sneak.
Yes.
And in Australia the Sneak started slow and then suddenly, woo! What about in the UK?
Same story. We started very slow, but now we are basically, you know, overtaking.
Was Tesla very popular in the UK?
Yeah, Tesla was very popular in the UK, but now, you know, not anymore.
[laughter] Do you know where number seven is? Whole
seven?
Whole seven?
Seven, uh, I'm not sure.
You're not sure either, yeah. No, it's
it's big. It's very big.
Uh, we we're filming with who's my friend.
Are you a celebrity?
You know, my wife still hit me all the time.
Oh.
Yeah.
You see, I'm just learning Chinese a little bit. Zaijian.
little bit. Zaijian.
Nah.
Jiajian.
Zaijian.
Jiajian.
Yes, yes.
I don't know what's happening here, but I think all the people who help here, they have to stand to attention and they have a bit of a meeting.
Interesting.
We're getting here to Sungrow. It's
obviously a big brand we know in Australia. Now, let's have a look what
Australia. Now, let's have a look what they actually if they got anything new.
There's the product that we all know in Australia, the single and three-phase hybrids, the batteries stack underneath, but I cannot see
the smart-looking all-in-one solution.
It's not there. I have no idea why all the World Cup is sitting here in the middle of it, but they're supplying cables, different thickness, different things, all copper cables. I mean, it
makes perfect sense because in an inverter there's cabling around the solar panels, a lot of cabling, so it makes sense that the cable manufacturer would be here, and it is a Chinese one. This is about
the sophistication where Australia stops when it comes to batteries in a lot of cases. We did have a battery manufacturer trying to get off the ground, but he's blaming the
Australian bureaucracy for having killed the company. Where do you come from?
the company. Where do you come from?
I'm from, uh, Austria.
What type of business you do in Austria?
Uh, I do, uh, solar investments.
In the past, it was all dominated by SMA and the big German manufacturers and all that, and it's changed a lot now, hasn't it?
It's the past.
It's the past, isn't it?
This is uh present.
[laughter] Yeah.
Even the Europeans accept that, is it?
mean, nobody can compete with China anymore.
Have you been here the first time or many times?
Many times. You know, uh you cannot follow it.
It's so quick.
It's out of the control.
[laughter] These are all brands we've never heard of in Australia.
So, we in Australia are actually percentage of the companies that offer these products in the whole wider world.
I'm just blown away how many inverters, how many batteries I've seen now. Now,
this is interesting. That's a panel cleaning machine for commercial solar.
It looks like it's got solar panels on the solar panel cleaning machine. Well,
I mean, this is definitely not for homes, but it is still commercial large solar farm. This baby possibly pays for
solar farm. This baby possibly pays for itself in a couple of months. I mean, if I be a distributor here, I'd be absolutely lost. I mean, how the heck do
absolutely lost. I mean, how the heck do I pick Wanjou or Winsu? Which one is going to supply the batteries to me? And then
your company depends on that company's reliability and warranty.
That's a tricky one. And here we have a nice little robot doing the panel cleaning. Behind me, there's a
cleaning. Behind me, there's a negotiation going on. The guy keeps on asking for price. She wants to talk about the functionality. It's only one question. Price? Price? Price? And she
question. Price? Price? Price? And she
goes, "Does this? Does this? Does this?"
And he goes, "Price? Price? Price?" It
is amazing. This baby can hop from string to string and clean it.
Yeah, it's pretty cool, right?
Which country you're from? India. India.
Now, you guys look like kind of a little bit entrepreneurial, but you also look very young. Is this
whole renewable industry really an industry for the young people to create opportunities?
Well, let's about it this way. The younger
generation will bring in a different mindset.
we make are going to affect our children, our grandchildren, our great-grandchildren. So, it's our
great-grandchildren. So, it's our responsibility as citizens of this earth to leave it a better place than the one we found it.
Love to see your faces.
Oh, yeah, for sure.
[laughter] We'll give you a quick laugh.
You You're QUITE HANDSOME, ACTUALLY.
[laughter] YOU'RE POSSIBLY THE MOST IMPORTANT GUYS I MET IN THE whole show. Do you know why? Because if India goes renewable,
why? Because if India goes renewable, the impact on the world is going to be so much bigger. It's not [music] an impact.
It's an impact.
It's the goal that we're trying to hit from our Prime Minister, 500 gigawatts by 2030. We're more than halfway there.
by 2030. We're more than halfway there.
[music] We aim to help complete the rest.
Well, guys, I'm sorry I couldn't answer [music] your price your answer about the price. Good
old GoodWe. Now, you see GoodWe here, like everybody else, again has these little displays.
Now, what is That's about a 400 W panel.
Well, wouldn't it be amazing if this would really be 400 W? So, I mean, they're all now moving also into the heat pump. So, it's interesting. Not too
heat pump. So, it's interesting. Not too
much heat, just good heat. Oh, look at this here. Building-integrated panels.
this here. Building-integrated panels.
They have not taken off in Australia because we got existing roofs. It's much
easier to bolt on the top. The only
issue is, of course, what happens if this gets smashed in a hail. You then
get straight away the water in. But, it
looks like a really great solution. But,
sometimes it does have practical issues.
There's like 500,000 people. I'm I'm
just getting in and I'm straight away running back into you. This is like the Crocodile Dundee scene, you know, that's not a knife. That's a knife.
[laughter] Exactly what it is.
Now, are you looking for something specific or you're just going with the wave?
Nah, just walking around blindly, looking like an idiot. Building
materials is where it's going to go, you know, the integrated building materials that we saw yesterday. So,
other than that, yeah.
We've got a group of four German people here, which very interesting because you could buy a 10 kW solar system in Australia with a bit of government
support for about euro 4,000 euros.
[laughter] In Germany, no chance.
I think 4,000 euros only buying the the AC side.
But no installation, no DC side. In
Germany at the moment, I think a 10 kW hour system between 12,000, very very cheap, 12,000 and 22,000.
But that's euro, isn't it? It's euro,
yes.
China is impressive, isn't it?
Absolutely. I like to be here and it's really impressive, but they have their own issues.
Nobody seems to want to talk about those but Exactly. There are some reasons for
Exactly. There are some reasons for this.
[laughter] Is there anything about China that you guys didn't like?
24/7 WORKING STYLE.
[laughter] YEAH, I DON'T THINK THEY'VE GOT a Chinese word for holiday.
Yeah, there is, but they they work much probably because they are more hungry.
And they developed a lot and this is because they are hungry.
So, I mean, we got the space station and it's the Chinese space station. We don't
hear in our media a lot about the Chinese space station, but there is one.
So, they're using the fact that their product was used in the spaceship as a way to promote themselves. I'm possibly
not allowed to touch it.
The irony is they even look like real solar panels. They have actually put the
solar panels. They have actually put the bus bars and everything in it. It's not
just a dummy.
Impressive.
Horn and Bird up in the Townsville area, big name and beyond. So, you must be like a Snake veteran, are you?
This is only the second time I've been to Snake, but we do it on a Master Electricians Presidents Tour.
These people from international, they come up to us when they hear from Australia, they say, "Oh, [snorts] we can learn from you. You guys are actually right up the front."
Yeah, if you hear that, it's amazing, isn't it? And we're very respected. Like
isn't it? And we're very respected. Like
we go to all these and into the factories. We've been to SunGrow
factories. We've been to SunGrow factories [music] in Longi and very, very respected. They really love what
very respected. They really love what we're doing.
Well, they possibly made a lot of money out of us, too.
Oh, that's for sure.
I mean, this is now really a Chinese show because I cannot see I mean, there's not even a bother to have the translation in English. And again, look at this. This is the whole electronic
at this. This is the whole electronic infrastructure. They're trying to really
infrastructure. They're trying to really show the whole integration of society with renewables. So, every house has
with renewables. So, every house has solar. I mean, I know there's still a
solar. I mean, I know there's still a lot of coal-fired [music] power stations we've seen in China, but definitely the message is we've got to go renewable.
This is how people live. Oh my god, somebody's put the lights on. Now, it's
even more pretty.
China is obviously an export nation.
They even have the containers here [music] and the ships ready to go out for whatever was produced there. What are
you here for? Are you learning the latest bit about how to service a unit or is it just what you do every year?
Oh, man, I love coming over here and see the technology that's coming. This is
the place where you get to see the future before it comes to Australia. So,
always trying to lead the cutting edge of what's going on.
How long you've been coming to SNEC?
My first time at SNEC.
What's your first impression?
It's massive. It's huge. But, I've done InterSolar before, as well. So, it gives you a good impression of what's going on in the industry. It's just yeah, it's very big, though.
The one thing on service that uh really shocks me is that it's the big commercial system where they make the most bucks that they haven't bothered to spend that little bit of money.
Yeah, they could be losing thousands and thousands and thousands of dollars just by not looking after their system. It's
we see it all the time.
The lesson to learn is if you buy something, just like a pet, you got to feed it.
Yeah, you got to look after [laughter] it.
They love their little models. Look at
it. And there's [music] always something productive. Look, we had in the last
productive. Look, we had in the last one, we had the export ships. Here, we
got the the diggers. All these buttons do different things. I'm possibly going to blow it up in a minute. Very pretty.
I just ran into Mike Whisp. Now, you're
from New Zealand.
Yes.
How many times you have been to China?
First time. And I've been very impressed. I'd have to say this is the
impressed. I'd have to say this is the cleanest city I've ever been to. It's
crazy.
The way the West portrays it in our media, China, to your own impression, are they a little bit of a difference?
100%. We went out to the IKO factory, a lot of us for the first time as well, to take some of our clients out there out there. Really, really blown away.
there. Really, really blown away.
It's all automated, isn't it? So, what
about that slavery argument that they say? How can you have slavery when it's
say? How can you have slavery when it's all automated?
Well, I I [laughter] I just feel the West, I'm sorry to say this, guys, you lost the race in the manufacturing, and nobody's paying me to
say this, but it's not the way our media portrays. I'm testing my Chinese.
portrays. I'm testing my Chinese.
Ni hao.
Last time I spoke to robot, he spoke back.
I'm here with Pacey, and Pacey just told me that she studied in Australia, both on the Gold Coast and in where else?
Sydney.
Sydney.
Do you think Australia is very exciting or China is more exciting?
Australia has more beautiful scenery, beautiful view, mountain and sea, which is not here in China. But, of course, China is more convenient, the public
transportation and infrastructure, even people here, right? We are passionate.
That's why we have such a good bonds.
So, she's basically saying, I'm not one for the leisurely lifestyle, I like the action, and there's more happening in China.
Yeah, that's true, definitely.
Three days at Sneck, [music] here's what I actually found. I went in thinking I'd finally find a way to understand China. Instead, I actually
understand China. Instead, I actually came out understanding Australia [music] differently. I didn't see that one
differently. I didn't see that one coming. So, the first thing that hit me
coming. So, the first thing that hit me was the scale. Not the size of the vent, the size of the commitment. It's not
just the products, it's everything behind them, every cable, every component, every manufacturer, every supplier, all in one room, and all
pulling the [music] same way. Meanwhile,
back home, we burn half of our energy bickering about. Just look at
bickering about. Just look at Parliament. It's not Team Australia,
Parliament. It's not Team Australia, because we don't have a common vision.
And that [music] common vision, that's China's real superpower. And the
second surprise was [music] how the world sees us as Australian, because we've already lived what they're about to walk into. The rooftop solar boom, the battery rollout, the grid
headaches. [music]
headaches. [music] We did all of this first, and the world is taking notes on our wins and [clears throat] on our screw-ups.
[music] The third thing, that's the one I wasn't really ready for. And I asked what they pay for power, and their answer stopped
me dead cold. Relative to income, they're paying as much as we are, and often [music] more. So, people with far less paying the same or worse for something [music]
we often don't think about for half a second when we turn on the switch. So,
that's [music] why these countries are so keen to move to renewable energy, and the last US-Iran conflict only sped up
that desire. And meanwhile, China is
that desire. And meanwhile, China is running on power [music] 10 to 12 cents a kilowatt-hour. Cheap electricity from
a kilowatt-hour. Cheap electricity from coal, from nuclear, and from renewables.
And that cheap power is the foundation for the entire manufacturing machine to sit on and [music] have success. Till
next time.
