Facebook Marketplace - Buy & Sell Secondhand (How To)
By TechGoesHome
Summary
## Key takeaways - **Facebook Marketplace is an Eco-Friendly & Wallet-Friendly Tool**: Facebook Marketplace offers an eco-friendly way to acquire items while also saving money, as demonstrated by the facilitator who bought most of their living room furniture, including a sofa, dining table, and coffee table, from the platform. [01:46] - **Beware of Misleading Descriptions and Unrealistic Prices**: When buying on Facebook Marketplace, it's crucial to read descriptions carefully and be wary of prices that seem too good to be true, as sellers might intentionally mislead buyers with inaccurate information or offer deals that are suspicious. [03:04], [13:39] - **Verify Seller Legitimacy with Profile Details**: To gauge a seller's reliability, check their Facebook profile details, such as their join date and any available reviews or ratings, as this can indicate whether they are a long-time user or a potentially new account created for fraudulent purposes. [07:46], [14:34] - **Purchase Protection Offers a Safety Net**: Facebook provides purchase protection for items bought through mail. If you don't receive your item, it's damaged, or not as described, Facebook will attempt to offer protection and potentially a refund. [09:35] - **Selling Fees Apply to Shipped Items**: When selling items that are shipped, Facebook charges a selling fee, typically around 5%, which is deducted from your payout. This fee helps cover the costs associated with the transaction and purchase protection. [30:37] - **Payouts for Shipped Items Take Time**: If you sell an item and ship it, your payout will be initiated after a delay, either 15 days after marking the item as shipped or five days after delivery confirmation, so immediate payment is not expected. so welcome everyone
you have come to the facebook
marketplace buying and selling overnight
ago we have danny lean who will be
facilitating this webinar uh gaming room
has been actively using facebook
marketplace for several years
buying and selling items from teddy
bears to apartments
uh danny is currently a senior product
manager at rx advance i'm going to turn
it over to danny go ahead
hello everybody hello hi it's great to
be here welcome
and i'm really excited about this
because i've been a
happy user of facebook marketplace
myself for quite a long time all right
so um yeah i've been a
happy user of uh facebook marketplace
i've sold i've sold tvs i bought
monitors i bought um new speakers for
myself and i've even sold um
gave away this wonderful
bear to a family that just moved to
boston
and um they were really happy about it
the little child was like screaming and
hugging
so
and also even sold my apartment for
thousand two hundred dollars i mean if
something can help me sell my apartment
that i don't want
i think it has a potential to be such a
great tool
it's such a great tool that it helps you
buy stuff that um
might be a little over my price range
yeah you can buy small things like the
small air tags for 80 or even like a
nice massage gun on there and plus
pretty much everything in my living room
i bought it from facebook marketplace my
sofa my tv tv sand dining table coffee
table dining chairs the list just goes
on
and i constantly see myself going back
and buying small things that i know that
um i may not really need a brand new
so
it's a really eco-friendly way to
[Music]
get new items and be able to
and be able to
save some money as well so not only
eco-friendly but all very wallet
friendly for myself but there's a big
catch here
when used well
this because this is a second-hand
marketplace we have to be really careful
of how we're going to use it
one example of that i was looking for a
new watch band for my um apple watch and
those kind of the leather ones kind of
go for like 100
even if you buy it from the apple store
but i saw this one thing that says it's
14
14 for a hundred dollar item i was
reading the descriptions
if you take a look it says um apple
watch fits this size
it's an original blade bracelet ships
within 24 hours but it's only 14 hours i
mean 14
so
i had my doubts and i actually messaged
a seller
hi is this an original from apple and
the seller said no it's not an original
despite of him um saying that it's an
original item from apple
sometimes you really have to take your
chances or
vet out
red flags when you buy stuff on
facebook marketplace and that's what
we're gonna really focus on today we're
gonna go through different steps but
we're gonna help i'm gonna help you
identify these red flags that you should
absolutely avoid
so first we'll cover buying and the red
flags that you should avoid in buying
we'll also go over how to sell stuffs
you can
ship it to people you can meet people to
sell it to them get cash
and then at the end we'll all shop
together we'll get a list of items that
people might be want to take a look at
we'll go into facebook marketplace and
we'll try to look at together and
maybe we'll find some red flags together
but before we move on to the buying um
any questions so far
have a quick question
yeah hi everybody
yes hi everybody everybody's doing well
um
and i tuned in a little bit late i've
been trying to fix a little tech thing
so i might have missed a little bit but
i'm wondering um
are the items
that you
sell on
facebook marketplace so that you have
experience with
um like pre mostly pre-used
or
um
yeah pre-used or other new items
that can be sold can be suitable for
artists or designers etc
that's a great question
um short answer
you can sell new stuffs and use stuffs
i've sold away my sofa that i've been
using for two years very nasty but
someone wanted to come and pick it up i
sold it for fifty dollars you i also
sold items that i never opened out of
the box and sold it for a good price
so yes i think if you're interested in
selling some of your creative work
you can definitely look into facebook
marketplace and people
find people who are interested in it
thank you
i hope that answered your question
um
[Music]
sorry
are we going to cover that
uh yes we're gonna go uh cover the
selling um it'll be on the second part
and we'll um explore different options
how you can sell on uh marketplace all
right thank you
all right um i'm gonna move on to buying
and in buying there are two major ways
you can buy stuffs on facebook
marketplace
you can either meet that person and pick
it up yourself or have it shipped to you
um when you go into facebook marketplace
and look at different items i search for
my watch band again um you're going to
see some items that are saying quincy
massachusetts jamaica plain it means the
person who posted there
lives there or you're going to see items
that are going to be shipped to you
you're also going to see sponsored items
which are
being advertised on facebook people with
companies paying facebook money to
advertise their products
if we look at closer on one of the items
um
it says it gives you relevant
information about the item
where
where the area is without the exact
location
and who the seller is bradford that
joined facebook in 2009
this shows that you know this is a real
person that joined that has been using
facebook since 2009 and lives in jamaica
plain and that is one of the
um strengths about facebook marketplace
because you're buying it off the real
facebook users
people who've been on facebook for quite
a long time
and if you look at items that are um
there for shipping you're gonna see the
price
and you're gonna see that it ships for
four dollars
in this case five dollar item that ships
for four dollars
i don't know if that's a really good
idea but estimated arrival um july 6
july 8th
um now that's a little taken out of
context but it usually takes about a
week for an item to get to you um
if you decide to get it mailed to you
that brings me back to the point that
you're buying items from real people on
so on one hand that kind of gives you
the trust that um
they're gonna be real people that sells
people to you not some
total random stranger on the internet
but on the other hand it means that
they're exactly amazon so if they're
they need to mail the item to you it may
take some time
there might be issues in the middle
there might be
issues with the item and you're going to
have problem getting a refund for it
so there are really two sides to this
that this is real people on facebook
um so for those of us those of me that
i'm really worried when i buy something
off the mail what if it never comes to
me what if the person just stops talking
to me there's purchase protection that
facebook provides
and
if you don't receive your item if it's
damaged or not as described or if you
didn't authorized it facebook will be
there to try to protect you
i hope no one has to use this uh but in
worst case scenario there are at least
these systems that gets you covered
so that you're not totally lost in the
dark
so let's look at this item again
together um jamaica plain the same
person that we were looking at 20
but when i look at the descriptions
closely
um this person is really selling three
items instead of just the 20 watch
um one band for twenty dollars one
charger for twenty dollars and another
band for fifty dollars
um so
the point is here um
outside that it made whatever the
information on the title is
we really always have to read the
description
and sometimes they're really
deceiving
because
um i'm gonna ask this person is this
available and that will be the next step
and we're gonna have conversations about
um
if when they bought it and asked him all
kinds of questions until i feel
comfortable
these conversations can go for a long
time sometimes i was trying to buy a
speaker off of this person
i had to one and the communication goes
like oh can i pick this up today
can i offer you this price or what's
your address what time should we meet up
so
it's not as easy again not like amazon
where you just click one button it just
comes to you you actually have to talk
to this person and try to figure things
out together
so there are a lot of important
questions we want to ask when we buy um
stuffs
on facebook market this
where did you get this from
i was trying to buy a dining table and
they were selling it for 85
and i found the exact same table on
amazon a new one for 92 dollars
so i asked him is this the new
is this the same item is this where you
got it from and are you selling it for
85
so
this this kind of things happen you
always have to ask for where did you get
it from can i see the original place or
even sometimes
receipts or any certificates if you're
buying something really valuable and
high price
can you measure it for me
i was trying to buy a coffee table and
then i had to ask this person do you
think it's going to fit into a small suv
and this is especially true for any
furnitures or anything you can ask the
person to actually take a ruler and
measure it for you because you don't
want to bring it all the way back to
your home and
be stuck with it because it doesn't fit
through your door or something
what's the model number this is
especially important if you're buying
electronics like tv
this is what exactly happened to me um
i like the price i like the item but i
wanted to get a picture of the model
number
so what's great about this model number
you can just
type it up and into google and you're
gonna see the exact model and you can
compare
and get what it's going to cost you if
you buy a new
so
after all asking all these questions
we hope to avoid red flags
red flags can include new profiles
really unrealistic prices
and misleading information
we're going to look at some examples
together on this
trying to buy in when you're trying to
buy an iphone the newest iphone which
the new one goes for around like 900
thousand dollars i don't know
and you yeah when you search for iphone
13 on facebook marketplace you'll easily
see items that cost about 350 500
175 for two iphones
these i picked them out because i felt
like these are red flags
let's look at the one on the left first
iphone 13 cheapest you will find for 350
dollars
the description says i work at apple i
can't help you guys without anything
join facebook in 2020
so pretty new profile i'm considering
that it's facebook
saying that he works at apple and
selling an iphone for three hundred
dollars i'd be very suspicious of it
let's move on to the next one
iphone 13 max pro for five hundred
dollars
but the description says
it's passcode lock they charge 60
dollars to unlock it it's not icloud log
it's blacklist clean it's in good
condition
join facebook in 2019
this clearly looks like a stolen phone
and um it's always a good idea to avoid
buying anything that seems to be stolen
secondhand
let's look at the last one two iphones
for
175 dollar well if you look at the
description 175 dollar per month
unlimited everything 2 13 is included
message for details if you're 55 plus
it's cheaper for you
um seller rating pretty high so someone
must have been having a very bad
experience with there
so the point is
some things are really there are a lot
of things that
really are too good to be true
and
then you have to compare your options
and figure out
what's good to be too good to be true
and what's realistic
i thought this was a pretty realistic
and helpful um
item
iphone 13 for 740
which is pretty realistic given that the
phone hasn't been out even for a year
picture of battery capacity very helpful
and stephen joined facebook in 2010
so i think compared to the three
very
red flags
three posts that are full of red flags
this 2010 post this post seems much more
reliable
so
um
it's
the possibility of being
picking a wrong item or making a mistake
can always be there but all we can do is
to develop
keep looking at items and be able to be
more comfortably say okay that's not
that's not right that's not right let me
find something
realistic
so before i move we move on to selling
any questions on the buying side
i have a question for you could you you
had that you had a slide up that said um
red flags
and i didn't i was trying to take notes
and and you took it down could you share
that with us again please sure
yeah i did go through it way too quick
did i
yes new profiles unrealistic prices
misleading information
and uh like in the description if they
if it feels like the item is being
stolen
um
what other red flags can be there um
yeah but really um there are people
who's trying to
go out their way of ways and try to scam
you um
and
it's um sometimes because you know you
can tell their intention is really to
make money um i think it's very possible
if you keep looking to be able to tell
if this is fake or not
how do you um
verify if somebody says they
have been in since 2010
how do you verify that they have
uh so that uh let's see
this state is provided from facebook
not uh by so this person can't really
enter
what date that is
um
so this is literally the year that the
account was created so mine would have
been created like
2002 i mean 2004. whatever
but
is it possible that somebody is trying
to scam you on a facebook account that
they've been using for 20 30 years
yes it's possible
but
is it more likely that someone who just
created the account last year and has
their old
personal account separately
and used this just for scamming purposes
much more likely so i think
this joined facebook in which year is a
strong indication whether
um if they're here for business purposes
or they're just like normal
everyday users like like us
okay
i have a couple of
questions whoops are we still on i lose
anything hello
i can hear you oh okay i'm sorry i get a
little my have a little chromebook and
it gets unstable sometimes
thank you um the first question is um
what are the um
seller what seller details are provided
um maybe you're going to cover that but
what kind of seller details
are provided beyond
you know when they joined
and is there um
a rating
[Music]
or is there a place where you can get
um
you get feedback from other people's
experience with that particular
and the other thing is in a previous um
about five minutes ago you mentioned
um you showed a little screen with
purchase
protection
um policies so i don't know if that
maybe you're going to come into that as
well and i'm wondering whether that's
free
or what that protection actually is
what is entails how you qualify for that
okay that's it thank you
so
for the first question first yes there
is a seller um rating
and
um
this person on the right has only six
reviews and ratings but you'll see some
people are
really popular here and they have a lot
of ratings and a lot of reviews
some people will write reviews after you
do it
and
um
other yeah here we go um
120 reviews and joined in 2015.
um i think if you click on seller
details you'll get um
some of what they have sold previously
and those kind of informations we can
kind of
kind of go back into that loop and see
exactly what we'll see
in there but yeah nothing too
personal it's just
um information related to selling on uh
facebook marketplace
address or your phone number or
something
thank you so this this person the person
over to the right that you now have on
the screen they have a one two three
four and a half stars
um the other folks i didn't see any
stars any ratings for them and wondering
what that means
and
um
with the stars do you get any other that
if i were to click on the stars
um would it show
the different kinds of um
[Music]
give information about
why people chose you know to give three
stars or five stars or six stars like a
dozen other sites
or does it just have the stars and you
have to guess why
you know
they got that rating
that's a question
yeah um
if you click on the stars i think well
as a person who's reviewing you get a
chance i mean you get a choice whether
to just give you stars or leave some
comments on it so if there are comments
left people will be able to view it
the other question was that
with
i'm sorry i forget totally forgot i'm
trying not to know what my question was
i was asking um you know what what
information
came with
the stars i think i had another question
i'm sorry
and that was pretty much it
oh these are you know um and this is
going to be a strong indication for
people who want to purchase it that this
is a reliable seller um i would
definitely not purchase
from a person who have like really low
stars
so that's just that'll be there to
um
give you
the people comfort
but i'm not sure if it goes if you're
asking like
if i have really good stars will i be
more favorable in terms of search
results
um i don't have a clear answer for that
but i don't i think getting good reviews
are always good
would you say that four and a half that
you're saying four and a half is not a
good um
review or
very good okay
may i ask one more thing i don't want to
take up all the time
but but i'm wondering it would it be
possible if you i don't know if you
haven't planned
to if you were you able to share
your screen in a way where you can maybe
click on something and do something live
is that part of the um
i think uh we want to keep that for the
third part
okay fine
yeah thank you okay
do you want to jump ahead
but that was great thank you i have a
question what forms of payment are
accepted
oh great question i can't believe i
didn't cover that yeah
um so in the pickup scenario um where
we're going to meet the person in
jamaica plain you can ask the person um
do you want to do it in cash do you want
to do it in venmo and everything
so it just depends on the person to
person because you're going gonna meet
that person and get the item right
but if you're ordering it through mail
let's say this five dollar sips for four
dollar you're going to pay to facebook
just like you pay on any other website
and
we're gonna cover this in the selling
part but facebook will take a small cut
out of it
so that'll be just and they will pay the
seller after the item arrived and
everything so it'll just be like another
um any kind of online marketing
do they accept paypal
uh
i think so we'd want to check that on
the third part too
okay
yeah i hope so paypal is great yeah i
use it for everything
i don't i hate putting all my card
number everywhere too so
exactly
okay
all right if there isn't any more
questions on the buying we can
definitely circle back at the end also
before we move on was one question in
the chat um we could have covered it i
was driving in from picking up my little
one so i could have missed it um but i
think the question do we have to pay
taxes for selling on facebook market
oh great question and where it will
cover it in the selling part although
tax information very specific i was
reading on
their support page
um
and i
they do
take the taxes off of you if you mail it
to them because that's going to be a
credit card transaction but if you're
just meeting somebody to hand them over
the sofa you're not going to pay taxes
for that
so we'll cover the how the price
breakdowns on the selling part but yes
great question
selling um multiple ways that you can
sell on uh facebook marketplace
item for sale creating multiple listings
if you're deciding to sell
all kinds of stuff all at once uh you
can sell vehicles or you can sell houses
or rents um like i did previously
and um once you go in um the
information that you have to type in
there pretty much mirrors what we saw on
the buying side you'll add photos you'll
put the title in you'll put a price in
let's say what kind of what kind of item
this is category could be electronics it
could be furniture it could be
blah condition what kind is it new is it
like new is it good
and descriptions
once we do that there are some
nice options that you can use
first
hide it from my facebook friends i found
this uniquely um helpful because when i
had to sell that teddy bear i didn't
want to want
everyone in the world
that i'm selling that so i use this
option and this will help um
this will tell facebook that
please do not show this posting to
accounts that are friends with me on
facebook list in more places if you're
in any of the local community groups you
can list the listing in there as well
and some additional listing options
once we do that um again
for selling you can either pick it up
from the other person
the other person can pick it up from you
or you can mail it to that person
so after you enter all that information
before this would be the screen where
you land up in um shipping and local
pickup you can
change the method you can either say
okay i only want to ship this or i only
want to pick this up
but when you click shipping
you're gonna
enter more details like the weight
and um
what kind of label you want to get this
will help facebook um give you a
shipping label and um this price will be
taken off of your price
um from the payout that you're getting
so
the
label is i find the very convenient
because after i enter in this
information facebook will email me a
label i just need to print that out
bring it to the post office and they'll
ship it for me right there
so
from that 30 dollar item
if i click if i wanted to ship it this
is the breakdown that i'm going to get
the buyer is going to pay 575
extra for shipping
the total will be 35 dollars out of that
facebook charges me
5.5
or 40 cents minimum of the selling fee
also i'll be paying some of the shipping
costs
so even though i list this item for 30
i'm only going to get 28
and 28
so this selling fee facebook is taking a
cut off of it and this is why facebook
only applies uh the purchase protection
on mailed items
they're covering their costs and using
it as
ways that they'll cover for incidents
and get this
running
so after you list it
sometimes you'll be very popular
when i posted um the tv
i had 20 30 people messaging me all the
sudden and when i was trying to rent out
my apartment it was like a week-long
process of
finding people to
that are interested answering questions
and scheduling visits
so this whole process
sometimes can get out of hand and
consume a lot of time
but once um once we do
and there are all kinds of people that
you're going to encounter
i've had people who never showed up
after they said they're gonna show up to
pick up the item
i had people who showed up at my door
and started asking for discounts
i had people
who wanted um who wanted me to ship the
item like
as soon as
uh they placed the order
so
there will be a lot of different
situations
so if you want to pick it up um i
it's going to be
a more
i say um less hassle way what when you
say you just want to have a local pickup
at a location and then you can set
different options if you want to meet
somewhere in public
if you can
if they want to come to your address
store drop off and pick up
and
how do i get paid if i
uh send something over the mail so this
is another side on the facebook
marketplace after you send it your
payout will be initiated after 15 days
after you mark the item a shipped or
five days after the item is delivered
upon the confirmation
so
when i'm if i'm selling something really
in a hurry
i can't really expect to get paid like
as soon as possible this process does
take time so
this is something we should really keep
in mind
all right so before we move on to the um
interactive section if um any question
i'm expecting questions on the selling
side too
one question is the united states postal
service the only shipping that they do
or can you use ups fedex or whoever
you can use gps as well we'll definitely
go through that together as well
and could you please click back to that
payout screen again for about half a
minute so i could just finish reading it
to pay at the um
the payout um steps
yeah and
um i'm surprised the tax information is
not on here um i think either it might
be
calculated all the way at the end or um
they'll let you know
at the payout
okay okay the one that showed
how the payout is initiated
it's the last few sentences i didn't
read
um yes thank you
20 days okay
okay
thank you
well all right
um so i guess we had half of the group
very interested in buying and also half
of the group interested in selling so i
think we're going to try to do both on
the third part um we'll try to look for
items and we'll also try to um post
uh something together and explore
different options um definitely
comment or
come in with any questions if you have
in the middle here because we're going
to try to get this interactive as
possible on the buying side
um can i get any recommendations on what
we should shop for
anyone has a good idea
can give me on the chat or you can um
speak up
[Music]
are you looking for
ideas for what
uh we're gonna try to go uh buy
something together so i'm thinking about
what we should shop for
oh
what
a motorcycle motorcycle
maybe something a little smaller
yeah i don't know what about a coffee
maker
coffee maker sounds good
laptop i see a laptop in the chat too
i think
we can try a coffee maker um i
definitely need some coffee right now so
um
all right so this is the facebook
marketplace um
they
already see some items that are that
facebook things that i'm going to be
interested in some rc cars
interesting
yeah there's
a lot of very interesting items i
sometimes just spend hours and hours on
here
browsing through random items but for
now we'll look for
uh coffee
all right
so
we're seeing
definitely
a lot of items i see sponsored items
ships you again mr coffee ships to you
if we have some local items
let's see the tips
here
oh i'm in new york
[Music]
we can go in and set the range that we'd
like
so if i just want to stick to like
a a final radius from where i'm looking
at i can do that
now
[Music]
there we go we have an item from um 170
dollars from cambridge
let's go into one of that and see how
they look different
25
new machines
15 pounds open box retail 300 that's
very helpful
shifts for 21
i'd say a little expensive and you can
see the estimated arrival is on july
19th and 25 so they're saying it's gonna
take a little more than a week
so
uh
okay so seller information let's see the
seller details since we um
we're talking about that but what
happened
alert
okay it say johnny's facebook uh in 2004
yes
so i'd say that's a real person that's
been using this account for
18 years
and let's see what kind of um this is
the information that we're going to get
um
what kind of items that they've been
selling
ships to you
what they
then listing
and we could report or report this
person it looks like i can even look at
uh the person's
facebook profile
and see if this is a legit person or not
if they never had any pictures or
anything there's a chance that you know
this is just a fake profile right
so
this looks like a pretty
reasonable real person who enjoys
selling stuff on
facebook marketplace
and i think we were there were some
questions about ratings and stuff so
let's go and find something someone that
might have a rating
on the seller side
so use less than 10 times great
appliance and change my mind
okay that's reasonable
purchase for twenty two hundred dollars
you know open to offers
oh
170 dollars but open to offers
so
um since this is a pickup
we could message this person
um can i offer you 100
and we could offer it this way
but
when we're um trying to buy items um
through the mail
we do have a offer button which i don't
see here hold on
oh
so on this item we have this um
button called make an offer
if i click this
although this person says 125
i can offer a lower price and
they'll have 48 hours to accept or
decline it and
if accepted um
they'll try to ship it right away and
this is um gonna happen
because um
what is it
because on the seller's side they have
um
indicated they will try to they're open
to offers
so this is how
the checkout page is going to look and
looks like they do have paypal and i'm
already connected to it so that's great
i totally forgot about that and you can
see from the hundred dollar item
i'm gonna have to pay shipping and looks
like the buyer's the one that's paying
the tax
and um perhaps we can look at the items
that i've sold before but i guess the
seller is not
paying any tax
according to this
and there is me delivery information and
contact information
and so forth
so this is how
you would buy items on the mail
and you would you can make offers for
items as well
any questions here yes excuse me a
question how much do you need to pay to
facebook when you
uh selling stuff
right well uh definitely go to that but
i think it was about facebook will take
four percent of the total price
okay whatever kind of uh
item that you are selling
a big uh
b equals one doesn't matter
i believe so um and it they only charge
it if you send it over the mail
person to person um you're not gonna
give facebook
um
i have a quick question
it sounded like okay once you make an
offer you make an offer it sounds like
you're committed to it right is that
true you have to be committed and if the
and if the seller
um accepts the offer they have what is
it 48 hours was it to it's i think it
was 48 hours to to reject up the offer
once they make that um maybe unless i
missed something it seems like once they
make that then they ship it out to you
and then you're charged i didn't i
didn't i missed the part where they let
you know that they have accepted the
offer and then you could say yeah okay
when i it's it's i'm still okay with it
or i change my mind or whatever you're
committed once you make that offer
they accept it and then they ship it
[Music]
when you make the offer you're committed
okay you have to do it and then
at what point do you find out like the
additional um
i think we lost you for a second
i can't hear anything
how do you determine the shipping cost
uh-oh
oh
i think she's back i think i broke up
i'm gonna i'm gonna come in on my phone
i'm gonna disconnect this and come in on
my phone
but um can you hear me now
yeah
okay i'm going to i'll ask this question
then i'm going to
i'm going to come back in am i going to
cut off i'm going to shut down and come
back on another device the question was
um at what point do you get the other um
shipping
details
um like the
the cost with the actual costs or any
other details
um
once you make that offer they accept it
and it goes out and is it after that
that you find out what the shipping fee
is because what if you don't what if you
figure well you know what the shipping p
is not fee it's not going to be worth it
for me
do you not know that ahead of time um
maybe it was there i could see it
right so
um yeah once you make the offer you're
committed and at the time when you're
making the offer you're basically saying
okay if they accept it i'll pay 127
dollars here
and that is the shipping cost included
so at the time that i'm making the offer
i already know um how much shipping cost
i'm shipping classes in there okay yeah
all right thank you
all right i'm gonna
leave and come back on my phone here
i will show up on devices sorry thank
you
let me ask you a quick question
yeah
does facebook have any kind of um
say and who can keep their
site up and who has to take it down
based on their
um
past history in other words if
somebody's got if somebody's clearly
ripping people off can facebook
pull their
website
and say no you can no longer be on
december
i haven't in well
i have never been reported to us uh
being suspicious or anything but
i believe if um
a seller is reported way too many times
or
if you're a buyer and you've been
reported too many times they'll
definitely take some action i need to
read some
policies on that but they do um if we
see here
we do have the capability to
um
you have the capability to report the
seller
so
i think what you're talking about that
facebook taking action on someone i
think it can definitely happen
okay
yeah
i'm sorry i i i'm sorry i didn't let you
to talk i'm sorry
oh yeah it's just one i of course if
you're trying to sell something very
inappropriate or something i think
they'll find out and
take it down as well so that'll be um on
their hand too
yeah go ahead
it is safe if you sell something person
to person
uh to put you
on address or is very
to put um
something close what is your best advice
um so
when you
post something for um local
you'll
when i'm trying to buy ones people are
looking at your item they'll not know
your location exactly like your address
but they'll only know like just like you
see here
location is
approximate so i know they're somewhere
lower like brockton area but i don't
know their exact address i'm gonna have
to talk to that person and arrange a
pickup and
discuss where we want to meet if that
person wants me to come by this door
then yeah i'll swing by and they'll tell
me the address by then
thank you
hey danny we got another question in the
chat it says how how do you determine
the shipping cost uh do you take the
item to post office to find out
ooh
great question and i think we'll jump
right into the
um
the selling side we'll try to create a
new listing and see how the shipping
cost is determined
okay 5 55. uh
how long how long are we doing it till
six or six thirty
probably forgot
it takes
six it said to six but
go as long as you want
[Laughter]
i'm glad to hear that um
but i'll go through this really quickly
um so add photos titles um do i need to
put one right now yeah i'll put whatever
um title
house price hundred dollars
um categories
say
art supplies
condition new description
blah
so after i do this um the delivery
method if you see here uh let's go to
shipping only for now shipping method
ups uh
shipping label
so looks like we can choose ups or usps
here um depending on the thing
and the package detail this is where i'm
going to say how much the weight is so
based on this
the um facebook is calculating the
shipping cost for us
so five pound item
on ups um it's gonna be six
sixteen dollars
a really light let's see
item will be nine dollars
this is acting weird but
hold on
input exact point
zero point
a very light item
uh it's not letting me do what i want
but
okay there we go a very light item looks
like usps is much cheaper
so
yeah um
definitely and you can decide to cover
the shipping cost um if you want
so this is where um the shipping costs
will be determined and it's going to be
shown on your
listing
did that answer your question
i think they was posted in the
in the chat
somebody posted in the chat
somebody posted something
you answered the question somebody read
the question for you
i don't know who was it
how do you determine the shipping and
cost yeah um so we definitely don't need
to take it to the post office to find
out we'll know at the time at the time
and um if we
keep going
uh oh yeah this is where you um
let the buyers to
um
place offers for you
my minimum price you'll consider
and publish that i really publish that
just now i need to
take that down but
there we go
[Laughter]
we just published
a totally weird um listing but um
this is going to
show me
what it looks like for people buying it
and
looks like i am community recommended
and it'll ship for four dollars no
returns and so forth
so
this is how the
listing process works and um
these some of my previous listings so
some of them i sold on mail and some of
them on okay let's look at an example
where i sold something on the mail
oh this one
okay
so after you um post something you're
gonna view the orders um here and this
you can see where you can get the
shipping label again and the tracking
details
and um
after the label was created i sent it
out few days later i'll see if it went
for delivery delivered and after it's
delivered i believe
i got paid a
few weeks later a week after that
and you'll see oh here they do take the
sales tax off so 50 dollar item they
paid some tax and shipping costs
facebook took a five percent selling fee
they took the sales tax and i paid some
shipping costs
so
i got forty seven dollars
but i mean
i listed for fifty dollars and i get
forty seven dollars so i thought it's a
pretty good deal
why isn't the buyer paying the sales tax
i have i mean i go into a store they
don't pay the sales tax i do
i'm serious oh that's very interesting
yeah i never really
paid attention to that before
it looks like you you're not paying the
um this is minus
okay hold up for something
yeah they
paid that tax
and um
that's enabling me to not pay it
somehow
so they paid the tax and i'm not paying
any i'm also paying it
because yeah i'm also paying the same
amount
so
it looks like
okay initially you're paying the
shipping costs to send it out
but they're
it's included in
what
it's included in their cost
so it's deducted from
let's say
the seller is paying for the
state taxes shipping plus it's negative
the number is
right
that's what i've changed thank you
they paid about 58
and i got paid 70 i 47
so
five dollars uh i mean the total of like
about ten dollars went somewhere
facebook took some shipping took some
and also the state tax took something
and the only thing that you paid was the
selling fee
pretty much
yeah
yeah you're right yeah fifty minus the
amount is
you know
understand that you're not it's not
being deducted from your um
have you also um
are we going till 6 30
i'm not sure me um
[Music]
are we i don't know what people are
available
so we we told folks that the webinar
goes until six um
and then yeah i mean danny if you're
able to take a few more questions that's
up to you i mean i you know if if people
need to leave um you're welcome to leave
someone may stay
yeah i'll say goodbye to people who are
leaving but um if you have more
questions please do stay i'd be happy to
answer for another um and
minutes question
hey 15
um
on the sales tax is it based on
the seller's state tax or the buyer's
state tax
that is a great question and i have no
idea
on ebay it's the buyers
yeah i don't think mass takes um oh what
is that like that's like
1.5 no
six and a quarter
yes
yeah that looked it's 9.78 looks pretty
high
so yeah i have no clue but um
looks like i think david's right i think
it's the uh it's the buyer
yeah that makes perfectly good sense
so how does the shipper know do you i
guess maybe david you might know this
how is the shipper um
gonna know what the sales tax is well i
assume facebook calculates it based off
the buyer's address so that
sales tax is a north carolina rate
whatever that is i have no idea
but i assume facebook goes in there sees
the guy's address or woman's actions and
then calculates it accordingly yeah i
mean that's what ebay does and i only
know that because i've been shopping on
ebay for years
way too many times
yeah i think ebay is great too but uh
i really love the localness of facebook
marketplace you can just pop in and grab
like literally my sofa there i bought it
from facebook marketplace
so i think um that's a great side of it
too
is
it is it is this site similar like great
list
yes i mean
in reality it basically does the same
thing right but um the only difference
is that you only need a facebook account
to be on here
and when you buy something from a person
you actually know that this is a real
person on facebook
not a
random person on craigslist who don't
really
look like a
real person but you cannot you're
actually talking to
a real facebook user so that's that
would be the only difference with
craigslist
the other thing is over the last few
years facebook marketplace
is really replacing craigslist there's
fewer and fewer listings on craigslist
and you go to marketplace and you know
you see a hundred or whatever
it's like more safe yes
yeah it's safe and it's very very active
like um
sometimes you're gonna see
like very popular posting where you use
upload something and people are gonna
swarm you with messages
i'm just gonna delete that listing that
we just created by mistake excuse me can
you can you uh repeat where do you want
to erase that that post can you repeat
the action
oh yeah
so
okay i see it the three dots and delay
delayed listing okay
yeah
ah shipping orders all that yeah and um
this is really wonderful on mobile as
well so um if you prefer to do it on the
phone um it's
it's there as well
danny
question um now a couple people
a couple of folks that had the um i
guess the apple phones one person had a
four and a half rating the other two
people including one of them if i
remember correctly one of them
um i think was
a member of 2004 or something they had
no i didn't see any ratings for them no
stars
what does that mean if they had no
ratings
i would just mean that nobody rated them
um let's see my ratings um
so so it's not required that people be
rated then it sounds like there's no way
really
oh
[Music]
okay i've definitely rated people
because they were really nice um but
sometimes i never rated it because i
never
um couldn't bother doing it
commerce profile there it is
i got two ratings and those are uh oh
look um visible to the public after five
ratings so only after you have five
ratings the stars will start showing up
looks like
how many of these people you think rate
themselves
maybe
sneaking and reading
sneaking a couple of good ratings
yeah maybe
definitely i don't know if this can
actually i can rate somebody
if i buy it off of um
let's see if i can buy it off of
just the normal person to person rather
than um
um what is it mailing because if you
think about it if i buy it through mail
i'm gonna put the order through it right
so that's why i have this
i think only here i can
rate the seller where can i rate the
seller
we're saying you cannot the other people
that can rate the seller is somebody
who has bought something
yeah i believe so if you haven't bought
something um you cannot rate the person
that makes good sense yeah
yes somebody has purchased something you
have an opportunity to rate them
and if if you had customers and none of
them chose to rate then there's no
rating that shows up
i can't
on ebay
i get an email after the item is
delivered and then they want the rating
and i found if you don't rate someone
they'll usually get back to you because
they want to keep their ratings high and
if you give them a low rating and
they've had five stars all along they
get quite angry and they want to know in
detail what happened
yeah
i mean most of the people on here are
just really
um people who just want to get rid of
something that they're not using anymore
i think those are the best listings that
you can find and once and they those
people don't typically care about
ratings that much too
i think um
yeah i think that's been the common
trend i've been seeing
do you know do either you know anybody
know um
um have a preference of
say
um between facebook and ebay i purchased
one or two things from ebay and i
i i wasn't satisfied with what i got
it was some software
i think that can happen to anybody but
i'm wondering whether or not facebook
tends to be more local
and maybe more
familiar or something or
um
and i don't know is this facebook seem
less risky or or not i don't i'm just
wondering
um why people speak one is vice versa
one difference is that i when i feel
like that's a real person that actually
been using that product
um that's one way that i feel safer the
other person the other side i said i can
just
message that person and start having
conversations right if i need to buy a
car like this i'll just message the
person hey
uh
how long have you have you have you ever
smoked in this car like or something
like that you know
and i think
the ability to have a real conversation
with a real person i think
that's one of the
main strengths on this marketplace
okay
all right thank you more questions to
person
yep exactly
okay
and
i mean
what was that
15 that's not bad four thousand dollars
right especially this who knows
yeah everything's so expensive these
days
driven
oh this guy drove a lot in five years
wow
um
intercur autos
oh
this person looks like uh it's like a
company though like a dealer that's
posting on facebook marketplace right
because
i see
um like that
and let's see about the seller
um
uh looks like a just a normal person but
maybe they are selling on behalf of a
company yeah inter-car auto sales
is it possible to visit any like um
space that has um a seller that has like
artwork or craft book or design work
just for
that
because i'm asking because i remember
a few years ago when facebook
marketplace first opened up i think
you could look at stuff but you couldn't
sell directly through it i think people
were using square or something this was
a several years ago
etsy is a great website for artwork
yeah i'm going to check them out too
i'm looking at local listings for
paintings and looks like this is very
active too
it looks very local yeah and yeah i
would definitely want to buy something
like that would be great to
actually go and look at it and
buy it or then
police
commissioner
he uh his sister used to be i saw her
and i knew her as a cop i knew his
sister his sister used to be a cop she's
retired
hey
i think we're at 6 15 and i think we're
almost at the end of the questions
as long as
um um unless someone has a question they
want to share the last question
oh
she's i was just going to ask you um
we're definitely going to be doing the
coding as well right
next time around hi thomas yeah so the
coding is a separate webinar and that
won't be until september but yes that
that'll happen uh that'll happen then in
september
okay great
this has been great very informative
thank you very much has been
very much you're welcome guys i really
enjoyed it too
and
to
regine
looks like
i'm gonna
send this to regine if it's possible
i think she's really interested in this
so
she can uh you can open the link that i
just posted on there um
machine and richie and hopefully i'm
saying that correctly but um
yes you can definitely contact this
person
and find out
yeah that's a good price for great
hold on is it me oh for me yes go ahead
vernell
um
i'll give you time to
go off of mute yeah but for everyone
else thank you so much for coming uh we
dropped a link to the survey earlier on
in the chat and we'll also just be
emailing that out to you as well thank
you so much for coming great questions
everyone um and thank you danny for
staying extra as well
thank you guys that was fun yeah thank
you i
i'll come back with something
interesting again
see you guys around thank you so much
danny have a good night
[Music]
