hey everyone today's topic is glasses again this was a very popular topic that was requested in multiple comments and as somebody that used to wear glasses
and contacts 24 7 I feel your pain so today I'm going to talk about some of the features and proportions that you should take into account when you're trying to choose the right set of frames that suits your face we'll talk about
the shapes the size the material of the frames the colors everything that has to do with glasses and some very useful tips for each of these factors so if you're interested then make sure to stay
tuned till the end I personally used to hate wearing glasses because I had a pretty high prescription and you know when your glasses are really thick they can make
your eyes look really tiny and I used to hate that especially going through puberty and when you're so self-conscious about your logs these things can really affect your self-esteem a lot you know and I've
always been told that my eyes are the best feature of my face so I felt like glasses were so detrimental to My overall appearance so trust me I get that those of you that wear glasses all
the time might feel some type of way towards them but glasses can also be used as a way to offset your proportions or as a way to draw more emphasis to your eyes and away from some of your
other features that might draw heavier emphasis Ali Wong actually does this really well if we look at her proportions Ally has a really long face and compared to her middle third her top
and lower thirds are both on the longer side and foreign East Asian she also has a pretty narrowed distance between the eyebrows and the eyes so the eyes seem like they're located a little bit higher
up in the face and that means the area from underneath your eyes to the end of her face is quite long if you remember from my other videos I usually call these areas outside of your facial
features blank spaces and Ali's blank space from underneath the eyes downwards is very long also compared to the size of her nose and lips her eyes are on the
smaller side as well so naturally they don't draw a ton of emphasis alone and then I skip fixated more on the blank space of the face which makes your face
kind of lose Dimension a little bit and makes it appear even longer so glasses actually help with these factors for Ally in two ways first the frames create a horizontal break across her face where
the blank space is the longest so it has a shortening effect on the overall length of her face visually and second Ali chooses a lot of frames with interesting shapes or with the pop of
color and the unique shape or the color of the glasses end up drawing a lot of attention to the frames themselves so naturally her eyes are more emphasized and the glasses help with keeping the
focus in the eye area and prevents the emphasis from drifting away if we look at Ally's proportions again she has a long top third and a square hairline so certain hairstyles that expose her
hairline entirely should theoretically be drawing our eyes upwards to her forehead and away from her eyes but the glasses actually help with keeping the emphasis on her eye area so she's able
to wear quite a variety of hairstyles that would normally draw too much attention to her forehead and her hairline because her glasses act as a way to prevent that from happening Jamie
Lee Curtis is a similar example Jaime also has a very long face and she has an especially long fill trim like I explained in my previous videos the way our eyes recognize the length of the
middle third is not only by looking at the length of the nose but also by looking at the distance from the eyes to the lips so if you have a long filter then visually again this blank space is
going to appear longer and make the overall length of your face appear longer as well now Jamie uses a pixie cut to bring the emphasis upwards and away from her long philtrum but her
glasses also act as a way to create an additional horizontal break in her face and also to draw the emphasis away from the philtrum area someone like Zoe
Deschanel can also benefit from this I use Zoe as an example in one of my first videos actually and it was about blunt bangs and in that video I explained that one of the reasons why Zooey Deschanel
looks so great with blonde bangs is because she has such striking eyes but the natural shape of her eyebrows are quite unique in that the Arches are located really close to the heads of the
Brows so the overall angle of her eyebrows appear to slope downwards and the distance between her brows are also quite far apart so her brows aren't
really effective enough at bringing a very strong emphasis to her eyes but like I said her eyes are quite striking so using blunt bangs to cover her eyebrows entirely works really well for
Zoe in accentuating her beautiful blue eyes similar to that logic like I said glasses have a tendency to draw the attention to the frames themselves so
our eyes are naturally drawn more to the eye area and the frames can act as a way to keep the focus on the eyes so let's say you have really striking eyes but your eyebrows don't do a good enough job
in framing your eyes and you also don't want to get bangs then using classes as a way to draw more emphasis to your eye area is a great trick that you can use
now the shape of the frames the size different materials and the colors these are all also important factors to consider when you're trying to decide on the right set of frames for your face
let's start with talking about the shape of the frames with the shape there's really two areas that you should be concerned with the shape of the top section and the shape of the bottom section the top section Works in close
relation to the shape of your eyes similar to how you choose your eyebrow shapes based on the shape of your eyes so what I'm trying to explain is the assimilation effect in visual terms if
we look at this image the red line appears lighter against the white background and darker against a black background even though they're actually the same red on both sides so it's an
optical illusion of our eyes associating the two colors in close proximity as being similar to each other and this is an example of an assimilation effect and
just like with colors shapes can also have this effect so similar shapes tend to enhance each other more than shapes that different from each other and how this can be used in choosing your frames
is that you want to consider the shape and the angles of your eyes to decide if you want to enhance your eye shape more or counter it for example if you have really round eyes and you want to
enhance the roundness of your eyes more then you can choose frames that have more rounded shapes or edges along the top or let's say if you have downturn dies and you want to offset the angles
of your eyes then you can choose frames that slope more upwards for the bottom section of the frames they work in close relation to your jawline so if you have a very square and strong jawline sharper
edges or more Square shapes in the frames would enhance that more while a rounded Edge would offset the prominence of the strong jaw I've seen some advices that say the shape of the frame should
always be in contrast to the shape of your features but I think that can really depend on your preference you know you might like the fact that your Square jawline is emphasized more or you
might want to make them appear so softer and same thing with your eyes maybe you want to enhance the upward angles of your eyes more with a similar upward angle in the frames and vice versa with
the shape of the glasses and especially sunglasses they're also very dependent on the current Trend and what your personal preference is in terms of the Styles themselves so I wouldn't
necessarily recommend that you need to wear square glasses if you have round eyes or that you need to wear round frames if you have a square jawline I think those are really dependent on your
preferences but knowing what kind of effects different frame shapes can have on your eyes and on your jawline would be helpful in making the right decision for yourself now when it comes to the size of the frames there is the
horizontal width and the vertical length of the frames in terms of width the general rule of thumb is that you should select frames that are about as wide as the width of your face if you choose
frames that are too narrow what happens is that your cheekbones and the outer fifths of your face get accentuated more so if you have really prominent cheekbones or if the outer fits of your
face are on the wider side then choosing frames that are too narrow for your face can make the overall face appear wider now some of you might be thinking well isn't accentuating your cheekbones a
good thing if you have really beautiful and prominent cheekbones like I said whether you want to make the feature appear more prominent or softer is your choice but one thing to keep in mind is
that when the outer fips of your face get accentuated more your whole cheeks area get highlighted more as well so if you have any fullness in your cheeks
then that would also be more accentuated if we take a look at this photo of this adorable girl for example we can see how in the top photo her cheeks are more accentuated and they appear Fuller when
the glasses are too narrow even though she's smiling in the bottom photo so that should technically make her face appear wider on the other hand if the frames are too wide then your eyes
aren't really centered in the middle of the lenses so the frames can make your eyes appear more close set and draw more emphasis towards the center of your face to your nose area so if you already have
a long face or if you have a long nose then those factors can get highlighted more when the frames are too wide for the face if we compare these two faces with the frames that are too narrow the
cheeks are more accentuated and the face appears wider and when the frames are too wide the eyes appear more close to that and the overall length of the face appears a little longer now these are just visual things that I'm explaining
but if you need to get prescriptions for your glasses or for your sunglasses then I'm sure there's also scientific reasons why your eyes need to be centered in the middle of the lenses as well so
protecting your vision and the health of your eyes should really be the priority if you need to get prescriptions for your glasses before you consider any of the visual impacts
now deciding on the vertical length of the frames again your prescriptions and the health of your eyes should be taken into account of course but from a visual perspective we can go back to looking at
the length of the blank space from underneath the eyes downwards to see where the horizontal break should really fall within the face if we look at Ali Wong again because this blank area is
quite long for Ali wearing vertically longer frames helps with minimizing that shortening effect to the face because the visual break is created right in the middle and with the vertical length of
the frames how high your glasses sit on the face is also something to consider because some frames that sit higher on the face can cover your eyebrows and depending on your proportions this may
or may not work in your favor for Ali Wong like I mentioned earlier the distance between your eyes to the eyebrows is on the narrower side and if you remember from my facial gender video
I mentioned that a close distance between the eyes and the Brows is one of the factors that can and add more masculinity to the face so with Ali I noticed that she actually wears glasses
that cover her eyebrows a lot of the times and we can see how depending on the frame sizes and whether her brows are covered or not the frames that do cover her eyebrows tend to soften her
overall look a little bit now the material the thickness and the color of the frames all kind of work together so I'll explain the effects of all of these factors combined first of all in terms
of the effect on the length of the Face Metal Frames are obviously thinner than acetate frames so the shortening effect on the overall length of the face is not as great with Metal Frames but even with
acetate frames the color of the frames will also matter because if you have clear acetate frames then obviously the level of the shortening effect will be similar to thinner frames like metal and
secondly the material the thickness and the color could also dictate how much emphasis the glasses bring to the eye area the thicker and the darker the frames the stronger the emphasis or the
attention is brought to the frames themselves and if the color is similar to your skin tone or the frames are thinner then the amount of attention that the glasses draw to the eye area
won't be as strong as really thick and dark or colorful frames so really dark and thick frames would bring the most emphasis to your eyes theoretically but if we go back to Ali Wong again I
mentioned how covering her eyebrows softens the overall look of it but with really dark and thick frames like these these frames fall perfectly where her eyebrows are located so instead of
softening The Look by covering the eyebrows the darkness and this Darkness created by these thick black frames actually end up adding more of a stronger image or impression so it's not
really helpful in softening the overall look so again like I preach on this channel all the time having a holistic approach of looking at all of the features and proportions together and
deciding what your priorities going to B is the most important step in choosing the right styles for yourself with classes I really really encourage you to
try them on physically before purchasing them I mean as with any fashion items I think it's always best to try the fit first but with glasses especially I think that even if the differences seem
marginal to the eye they can have a pretty big impact on your face when you actually try them on and nowadays there's more and more online shopping available for frames and stuff like that
but in my opinion as somebody that's worn glasses for a good 28 years or so of my life I highly highly recommend you to actually go into a store and try them
on physically and when you do keep in mind of the factors that I talked about throughout this video to make an informed decision for yourself I hope you found this video helpful and before you go just a quick reminder that
