Gatlinburg Parking Garage Accident | Full Story & Recovery

By Everything Autos

Summary

## Key takeaways - **Police deem accident "interesting"**: When police call to describe an accident as "interesting," it's a strong indicator that the situation will indeed be noteworthy and complex. [00:02] - **Two cars involved in parking garage fall**: An initial incident involved a silver car hitting a parked Suburban, then accidentally accelerating and driving off the parking garage ledge, with the silver car also falling with occupants inside. [01:32], [13:35] - **Winching and flipping the Suburban**: The recovery process involved careful winching and setting up to flip the Suburban, with the team prioritizing safety and managing the complexity of the vehicle's position. [15:48], [23:50] - **Battery tie-down importance highlighted**: A critical safety takeaway from the recovery was the importance of battery tie-downs, as a loose battery caused sparking and arcing due to the hot wire welding itself to the car. [36:32], [44:27] - **Parking garage structure designed to break away**: The parking garage's guardrail system is designed with crumple zones, allowing it to push away and break without compromising the structural integrity of the garage itself. They said it was bad. If the police call

you and tell you that it's interesting,

then you probably bet your bottom that

it's going to be interesting.

>> Apparently, somebody drove off the

parking garage. Oh goodness, that is

interesting. Wow.

And it's going to be complicated.

[Music]

>> Okay, guys. Not sure what we're getting

into here, but I heard it was bad. They

said it was bad. said it was an

interesting situation.

>> Police call. If the police call you and

tell you that it's interesting, then

you'll probably bet your bottom that

it's going to be interesting.

>> So, apparently somebody drove off the

parking garage.

Now, I don't know what that involves.

Boy, there are people everywhere.

Goodness gracious.

Here's the officer. He's gonna let me

know which way. I think you need to go

in here.

>> Oh goodness. That is interesting.

>> Controller.

>> That is interesting.

>> Where the phone at?

>> Yes.

Wow.

There is a second car involved. I do see

airbags deployed in the second car. Wow.

Wow.

>> See what we can do.

What do you think, Jim?

>> Yeah.

>> Get him.

>> It was interesting, huh?

>> Yeah. This silver one had pulled in the

older couple up top. Back up. Hit that

one. They both come off.

>> I mean, it's totaled. So, I guess we

just

>> pull it off there and

>> it's going to make a lot of noise.

>> Yeah.

>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, we'll just we'll just

get it scooted down here and

get it carted off. Um I might have to

come back and get that. Is the other

ones involved, too, you said?

>> Yeah. Uh I've called for next schedule.

I asked them and they said go next

schedule. So I don't know if they're

going to have you get them both through.

>> They did. He did. He asked if we could

get them both. If we could just get it

off to a

>> We can either come back after or you can

send somebody else.

>> I mean, I can I can Yeah, if we can just

kind of scoot it over to the side, I can

drop this one and come back and get that

one.

>> Which one you want to get first?

>> Probably the black one first. That looks

a little more dangerous to Yeah. Yeah.

>> Oh, yeah.

>> Everybody okay?

>> Yeah.

>> There's nobody in the

>> black

worst because you know I mean

everybody's a guest here in

>> this.

Um

>> we'll have to

>> Do you want to pull it this way?

>> That wouldn't be a good idea. It'll come

towards us. Mhm.

>> Um,

>> might be able to go set up in the

parking lot up there, get it pulled off,

and just lower it down.

>> That might be a bad idea.

>> That way you can lift it up and then

>> Yeah. And just safely lower it.

>> Yeah.

>> Is it going to slide? It's the same

thing.

>> You know, I don't think it will.

>> I mean, we want it to slide, you know.

Is it going to pull our truck down?

>> It shouldn't. It should be okay.

>> We have a glass.

blade on it. I need a

>> But this one, we're going to have to get

this one out of the way first.

>> Yeah.

>> That's underneath that still.

>> Okay. Um

[Music]

>> on the Kentucky restoration on the black

one, what was the last name on that?

[Music]

It's going to be George 1 John 931.

George one John 931.

>> Hey, it's it's

>> not

comes back. Not on file. Don't have

name.

>> Both of them. 41.

>> What I'll probably do is try to get pie

and then drag that one down out of the

way so I'm not don't have to worry about

that one coming back on this one again.

>> Um,

>> and I might what I might do is go up

there

>> if I can get it pulled loose and then I

can lower it slowly up here. I hope.

>> I'll see.

>> So, you want to move this?

>> Yeah, I think I'm going to I'm going to

drag that one down first.

>> I think it's I think it's stuck. I think

it's stuck under it.

>> Stuck under it. Yeah.

>> I can Yeah.

everything.

>> Thank you guys.

[Music]

I don't know where I'm going to pull it

to.

>> Can you just put it right there

>> without getting stuck? Back it up just a

little bit. I could set up over here and

try to drag. I know. Golly.

[Applause]

[Laughter]

Yeah, if I can. I don't know where I can

put this one without trapping myself.

>> If I could just hook it and go that way.

>> Go right here with it. Can you

>> If I Yeah, if I can get it hooked.

[Music]

I think I'm going to try to drag this

one out of the way so I can lower that

one.

>> I'm going to go grab the keys.

>> Okay.

[Music]

[Applause]

He's dead.

[Applause]

[Music]

They were in it.

>> Oh,

>> we might have to steer it.

[Music]

[Applause]

[Music]

I do get to see you about 36.

[Music]

What's it got?

>> You'll have to lower it cuz this car

this tire is all the way through.

Can you boom way way way in?

>> I'm turning so sharp it won't go in now.

Just Just chain it.

This tire is flat.

>> Just let's just chain it.

[Music]

It it is bad. Is it Is this you by

chance? No. Okay.

I just can't make it.

>> Okay. Well, I guess can you take it over

here?

>> No. Then I'll be trapped. I won't be

able to get out.

>> Can you go Can you just pull it up

forward here? Just like right here. Just

pull it right here.

>> I can't see my front end.

>> Nope.

Can you put it right here?

>> How?

>> I don't know what part.

>> See if you can make the truck.

[Music]

Hold

on. I need to steer it.

>> No.

>> Excuse me.

>> The documents they have not checked.

They were just about to check in and all

their stuff's on there. Is there any way

they could grab some of their stuff?

>> Oh, yeah. I'm I'm This one's going to be

last. So, this one will stay here.

>> Pull this out.

>> This This one will go first and then I'm

coming back after this one. So, this

one's going to be here for a little

little while.

>> Where's it going to be?

>> It'll go back to our lot. 221.

>> Going to be while you're moving while

you move.

>> Probably right around in here cuz I

can't really get it.

>> Yeah, I know. You can't really push it.

>> Yeah. I'm hoping just to take it back

out that way.

>> Talk to the law enforcement there and

see if we can get

Sure. That sounds good. That sounds

good. Yeah. I just don't want to trap

myself here. So if I can get it

>> stand too. You just kind of

>> Yeah.

>> Yeah. If you can just get it

>> that way.

[Applause]

[Music]

a few minutes to try.

>> Hopefully I left myself enough room to

back out of here.

>> Yeah.

>> Okay.

>> Now, are you going to set up there?

>> Yes.

>> Okay.

>> I'm going to try.

>> Let me move this so you don't run over

it.

>> That's good. That's good. That'll be

good.

That's LA.

Heat. Heat.

[Music]

So, what happened was this car was

parked up here and the other car the

other car was trying to back into a spot

up here and And he accidentally hit the

gas and slammed into this car and then

drove himself off of it. So both cars

were up here.

>> Both cars were up here.

>> Both cars were up here.

>> Holy moly.

>> And the people in the in the other car

were in it when it went down and over.

>> Wow.

[Applause]

my underreach. I'm going to try to push

with the underreach and then try to

lower it with the if

>> Yeah, I'm good. I'm Yeah, I'm dug in

back here. So,

Well, I'm probably going to have to back

up, too, cuz I still don't think I'm

going to have enough room to make all

this happen right here. So, yeah. No.

Yeah, it's it's okay. It's okay. Um,

just let me know when you're I guess

everybody's okay. You're ready.

>> Yeah. Hopefully we can and it and it

>> I'm I'm good with what we've got here.

Um I at most I'll probably have to back

up just a little bit, but I've got

plenty of room.

Yeah. I I don't I don't know that it'll

uh it'll land on its wheels. I'm

thinking it's probably going to land on

its side.

[Music]

[Music]

[Music]

Heat up here.

Heat

up here.

[Music]

I'm thinking it'll probably land on its

side, but I Well, I mean, I'm I've got

it's going to be a slow, but I don't

think there's

[Music]

Yeah, it it'll happen slow.

[Music]

[Music]

Heat up here.

[Music]

[Applause]

Yeah.

Heat.

[Music]

Heat

[Music]

up

here.

[Music]

Heat. Heat.

[Music]

Oh, I'm fine. It's good. It's good.

[Music]

[Music]

I guess that block fell. Yeah. No, don't

go under. No. I'm going to put a little

bit of pressure here and I'm going to

try to just ease backwards. I've got a

got a good hold on it.

[Music]

Everything's awesome up here.

Heat

[Music]

up

here.

[Music]

It's doing that on its own

and it's going to be complicated.

And I can, but the problem with the lift

is I'm pulling it to me.

I don't want to pull it to me. I'm

trying to get it off the wall.

It's not

I need to turn just a little bit more.

Get the that tire hooked is the main bad

thing.

Heat. Heat. Heat.

Heat. Heat.

[Music]

Yeah. No matter what I do, I can't get

it to clear that.

No, it's fine. It'll come. It'll come.

[Music]

There we go. We're in good shape now.

Yeah, I don't need it now.

Oh, it'll have to. Yep.

Heat

up

here.

[Music]

Yep. Pulling forward.

What was sparking?

I think it's okay.

Okay. I mean, I've got

[Music]

[Music]

Hey, can you unhook that one?

Yeah.

Uh, if you can.

[Music]

Yeah,

we can come down there and get it back

on its wheels pretty easy from there.

I'd say it's the battery that probably

needs unhooked.

Heat.

[Music]

Heat.

Yeah, we'll probably see if we can get

it rolled over.

Um,

yeah, that'd be fine.

Yeah.

Yeah, that's fine.

[Applause]

[Music]

Yeah.

>> I I don't know how much I can angle the

front is not

good for me.

>> Yeah, that's fine. Okay.

No, we'll just leave it.

We should be clear that. That pole

should keep us away from that.

Yes.

[Music]

>> What are we doing?

>> Spin it around.

>> Yeah.

I'm just going to It'll probably spin

around um off that back one. I'll just

low pull it and spin it around.

[Music]

There's some big birds, so don't grab

again.

Yeah, that's fine.

and put it over here on this.

Probably need another snatch block for

another low pull on that side.

[Applause]

[Music]

There we get it back this way off that.

>> Unless I can use one of those trees on

the other property, then I'd probably be

destroying their fence.

Yeah.

>> Are they Are they just wanting to secure

it to get it from stop sparking or what?

>> I think they got it.

>> Okay. Cuz I'll have to put it back on

its top again.

[Music]

[Music]

I just have to unhook both of them.

[Music]

It's okay. That can't go nowhere.

I could definitely do it if the fire

trucks weren't.

We just got so much equipment here that

I can't I can't maneuver.

Yeah.

I mean, I think it went pretty good. I

knew it was that it's going to be easier

than just pulling it off there and

letting it slam down. I could get close

and try to do the reverse roll, but it's

going to be tough.

Well, we let that one down easy in the

lot.

But it's it's up against that thing. So,

I It's going to hit that pole.

He'll have to go forward. There's no

other place for him to go unless he's

going to try to go back up.

>> Trying to get out. Um, I guess you can't

go forward, can you?

>> I can inch forward a little bit and then

I can back out of here.

>> Yeah. Yeah. Let's Let me see if I can

back up so you can get out of here.

>> If you can stay tight there, I can get

forward and I can kind of three point

out.

>> He's He's moving the police car behind

you too.

>> Okay.

>> You let me know what you think. I got

enough room to roll it.

Heat.

[Applause]

[Music]

Heat.

Heat.

[Music]

Heat.

[Music]

Heat

[Applause]

up here.

[Music]

[Music]

I need a I need a wheel chalk. It's

going to roll.

[Music]

Heat. Heat.

Of

[Applause]

course it's locked. It's locked. I don't

[Applause]

[Music]

[Applause]

[Applause]

Get some stuff out of there before we

pull it out.

>> Absolutely. Yeah.

[Applause]

>> Well,

it didn't hit the wall, so I guess

that's a a win. Here's the key. I got

the keys. The owner is right here.

>> Yeah. Yeah. He He wanted to get some

stuff before we took it. I think

>> I'm going to leave the keys in here on

the front seat for you guys. Um I'll let

you guys talk to the owner.

>> Yeah, that sounds good.

>> Kind of positional wind from the ocean.

The owner can come down.

>> Yeah, I think we're in a safe spot now

if you guys are good with it. Yeah,

we'll we'll just keep that around.

>> Okay, guys.

Hopefully the microphone's working.

Welcome back to the channel. Um, first

and foremost, these headsets these

headsets are amazing. You can find them.

The link to these headsets will be in

the description of our There's that one

there. Um, but they're they're very

they're very good. Um, we've got uh

thankful to a lot of folks. We had some

people donate them. We've had the

company reach out to us and donate some

uh to try. But they are absolutely

amazing. So, as I've said before in

other videos, these work for a lot of

other things other than towing. You

know, if you guys are traveling around

the world, need to communicate with your

passengers, RV backing, multiple

multiple purposes. But big shout out. If

you need them, you need them. Go grab

you a set of those because they were

life-saving today. Um we were able to

communicate. Um, we had uh one of the

officers with a headset on just trying

to keep the whole surrounding area safe.

And uh we did have some folks that

didn't want to do so. We had some kiddos

that were getting close. We had some

grown-ups that were were getting close.

So, big shout out to uh to the company

for those. Uh moving forward with the

recovery, as always, there's more than

one way to skin a cat. Uh comment down

below. I love hearing from you. I learn

something new every day in in our

career. Um, but personally myself, I

thought that that was the easiest way to

get that down. Um, obviously wasn't

going to grab it from the bottom, pull

it out, and let it slam down because

then it would have damaged the the

parking garage and we were trying to

keep everything undamaged on that and

the pillar and the rock wall and all of

that stuff. So, I personally chose to go

to the top uh used the underreach to

push it out a little bit. Had a little

bit of trouble trying to get that front

wheel off of the ledge. So, I had to had

to maneuver several times and reset, but

at the end of the day, it ended up

working. Under reach, pushed it away,

lowered it back down. Now, it's a given.

It's going to be on its side. I knew it

was going to be on its side. It's

totaled, so I'm not going to go out

there and uh and risk a whole lot of

things when we can try to do it as safe

as possible. Now, we did have some

battery issues. Evidently, somebody's

worked on that thing uh a time or two in

its in its life, and obviously, it

didn't have a battery hold down in it.

Pushing forward with that. I'm not going

to climb out there on the ledge and and

uh unhook a battery while a car is is

hanging. No matter what the situation

is, it would have just been couldn't get

to it. Wasn't going to happen. So, uh

that's just what we run into every now

and then. So, if you've got a vehicle,

make sure that battery tie down is in

place because it is very important for

these situations. If somebody was in

that it did catch fire just because

somebody forgot to put two bolts on a

battery tie down, that's very bad. So,

put your tie down on. Make sure it's on

there if you replace your battery every

month or uh every 12 months if you if

you live in some cold climates. Some of

some of my folks out there do a lot of

battery replacements. So, one of those

things important things to do, make sure

that battery tie down is in place. If

you do it or if somebody else do it does

it, make sure it's done. That was crazy.

>> You made it.

>> Um but yeah, like I said, we we we could

have had some we could have did two

wreckers. uh had and some had some uh

people there saying, "Hey, you need a

second wrecker on on scene." And yeah,

might might have went smoother, but at

the end of the day, the parking lot was

barely big enough for the vehicle down

there. So, it could have been

potentially a pool let down situation,

but we would been a lot of risk down

below on the pool, and we wouldn't

really have been able to get completely

sideways with it to get the pool. So if

we were upstream from it pull, I still

think it would have wanted to do exactly

what it did with just me at the top and

everybody cleared out at the bottom and

safe. So again, I chose to do that

because I thought that that was the

safest situation to do so. You guys

comment down below. There's a million

different ways to do it. And no, you

could not put a roll back at the top and

pull it back up. That was I don't know

what kind of roll back you have, but

that's not going to happen.

>> And that garage was not going to support

a rotator. You can you'll probably have

to repeat. Yeah, the rotator. I mean,

you could have got a rotator in. I don't

know if most of the guys would want to

set up with their rotator on that

parking garage. I don't know what the

weight limits are on that thing and

would have been very limited room at the

bottom. Could have been done. Could have

pulled in and used the rotator at the

beginning of the parking lot. That

probably would have went smoother, but

at the same time, I'm trying to get, you

know, whoever's going to come in and and

try to get all that set. We're there.

We're there. I got it done. We didn't

damage anything any further. The

building was was untouched. The only

thing that happened was we lowered it

down on its side and then flipped it

over after the fact. But like I said,

vehicle's totaled. Not going to hurt it

anymore. Made a little more work for us

on on cleanup. I will give it that. And

it was a little more risky on the

battery not being in place. So, it did

spark and did some crazy things there.

So, was a little more dangerous on that

end of it. And all of that could have

been prevented with a rotator, but I

don't have a rotator and we still got

the job done. We didn't damage anything

any further and we're here. So,

>> so do you want to discuss a the integral

structure structural integrity of the

parking garage because I was talking to

the owner about that and also what

happened.

>> So, yeah, he the the the owner of the

parking garage said that those pillars

weren't attached to for say the parking

garage.

>> No, not the pillars. The the barrier

around the top.

>> Oh, yeah. Yeah. Yeah. where they went

off a ledge.

>> It was set up to where they could fall

off without

>> they could fall off without it affecting

the structure of the parking garage. So,

all of that stuff that went off the edge

and landed um put some pretty big divots

in the ground. Um but it's just kind of

the the the guard rail where everything

pushed and and fell off. But this is

made to to push away kind of like

crumple zones in cars. It's just a

safety that can push away and it doesn't

hurt the actual parking garage so it

doesn't collapse and it it's meant to

break away. So, it did its job and it

did and it did well. The what happened

may be better for you.

>> Okay. So, first of all, there were there

were two parking spots underneath where

the cars landed and there were no cars

parked there amazingly. So, what

happened was the black car was parked,

the Suburban was parked, the silver car

was coming in and he was trying to back

into that other spot. He bumped the

Suburban and pushed it. And when he went

to hit his brake, he slammed the gas and

there were tire marks where he peeled

out and just shoved the Suburban off.

And then the silver car with its

occupants inside gassed off the end of

it with its occupants inside. So nobody

cars were up top.

>> Yeah, both cars were at the top. Nobody

in the black

Tahoe, but everybody was in the wagon

ear. And um golly, everybody's okay.

>> They were they had some minor injuries

and they were very shaken up

understandably. So

>> yeah, you just fell 12T off of a parking

garage.

>> Nobody left in an ambulance.

>> Hey, that's a win-win.

>> Amazing. Amazing.

>> I'll take it as a win on both ends.

Everybody's okay. Um we got both

vehicles back here to the lot and uh we

did so without further damaging anything

else other than a back window. I'll give

it that. I did break his back window.

>> Back window. side window. But I mean, it

was totaled anyway. It was total.

>> Yeah, it's a complete loss anyway.

Probably on both vehicles, I would say.

>> Yeah, definitely. Definitely that one.

>> But yeah, they're both

>> deployed on that one.

>> Yeah, that one's uh in worse shape.

>> But anyway, guys, um comment down below.

Like I said, I love hearing from you

guys. Could have had the um 600R mini

rotator. Probably would have been pretty

amazing for that.

>> Fantastic.

>> I got my guys out there trying to get me

to buy one of those

>> for your once a year job. You need it. I

mean, yeah, it's see see it's I could

have I could have this stuff laying

around and and literally would need need

it once or twice a year. So, um

>> let's turn this way and let them look at

the sunset while we gabber

>> gabber instead of looking at the truck

and

>> all of that stuff over there.

>> Yeah, look at the sunset.

>> But anyway, guys, we appreciate you out

there and um we're just growing. We're

growing and we're using the equipment

that we have and so far it's working for

us. uh we just have to do so as safe and

um efficiently as we know how. And so

far we've we've done that. And uh

>> I just want a huge shout out to the all

those hotel employees. They we had a

bunch of people.

>> They were on top of it. They were

blocking traffic. They were keeping

guests away. They were keeping people

safe. They were cleaning up stuff. I

mean, they were just on top of it. So

they did an amazing job.

>> We had the owners of the Tahoe that were

really upset with us. Um they had no

idea or this

>> same thing. Yeah, the black the black

thing. Um it it you know they were

upset. They just happened upon it as uh

we were trying to do the recovery

>> cuz they weren't there.

>> They had no idea that happened. So they

were upset with us. So you know huge

shout out to everybody that calmed

everybody down and got things under

control. Um as always GPD amazing job

those guys um you know keeping us safe

and uh and we're all in this working

towards a goal of public safety.

>> Yeah. The fire department was there. As

soon as there were sparks, they were on

it.

>> Yeah. Fast. Fast.

>> On it. Yes.

>> We're lucky people. Lucky people to be

in a great community. And um like I

said, uh shout out to to everybody out

there and our YouTube family. We love

you guys. I've got a lot of shouts uh

while we were doing the doing the

recovery. Uh folks in and around. If

I've missed you while you here while you

were here, I'm sorry. Uh but we do have

a fantastic little meeting area over

there. Uh

>> got a lot more t-shirts coming your way,

guys. We've got those ordered. Um, so

several shipments of those. So that

thing will be loaded up for the holidays

that are coming here soon. Lots of toys

uh in that thing. So stop by, grab some

toys for the kiddos and uh hopefully

grab yourself some merch. And we

appreciate your support. With that being

said, we're going to take advantage of

that sundown

and uh grab ourselves something to eat

and get back to work. Stick around. Stay

tuned. Okay, guys. Um, just wanted to

show just what I was talking about here.

Look at this.

Tie your batteries down, guys. I know

it's hard. I know this these four bolts

have to come out on the Taho and most of

the Chevys, but it's a little strap and

it's very important to make sure that

the battery is tied down. Now, just me,

obviously, I turned the dang thing over

on its side, so yeah, I get it. But I

mean, it could be you could just be

going down the road and and hit a bump

and that thing could jump up here and uh

just not a good idea.

>> Explain what was sparking and what the

fire department said welded

>> right here.

>> Oh,

>> that right there. The hot wire welded

itself to the car itself and that's what

was sparking. you know, all of that, you

know, as as intense as it was and me

lowering it down on its side, that could

have completely been safe and avoided,

if they had put their battery tie down

back in place, uh we wouldn't had the

the quite the alarming moment that we

had there. Um just the unexpected, but

that's part of the job. Expect the

unexpected. And I just kind of wasn't

thinking that, you know, maybe they

didn't have their their battery tied

down. That was really the farthest from

my mind. But uh should have been the

first tie your battery down.
