Graduates families friends and guests, please stand for the national anthem sung by Professor Gregory Shepard.

Say you see by the dawn early light.

red glare.

John J. College of Criminal Justice.

So, I can tell you a secret. You can

tell when it's my turn when they bring the stool out. Good. Good afternoon,

everybody.

Welcome, welcome, welcome. ARE YOU READY TO CELEBRATE?

I hope you are because that's what we're here to do today. Um, so we're here to applaud you and your remarkable milestone in life. So I learned

yesterday when I was um zooming into church what commencement means and it means that you're beginning you're going to begin a new chapter. I always wonder why somebody people were so particular

about not saying graduation but saying commencement. It's because you're about

commencement. It's because you're about to commence a new journey, a new phase in your life. So on behalf of John J's faculty staff administration along

with our valued community, CUTUNI community, I'd like to congratulate our graduates and our honorary degree recipients, including renowned molecular

biologist Dr. Lydia Via Comroth and noted historian and educator Dr. Lonnie Bunch, both of whom were recommended by John J's committee on honorary degrees

and the faculty senate.

This year we will also have the honor of recognizing the Ellis Island Honor Society chairman Nasser J. Kazamini with

the Presidential Medal of Honor for his continued philanthropy and valued partnership with the college.

I'm just checking something.

Um and we are going to honor him with the Presidential Medal of Honor for his continued philanthropy and valued partnership with the college. Nasser

could not be with us today, but we are excited to share his impressive journey and invaluable contributions to our students and our community. I'd like to

extend a warm welcome to the family and friends of our graduates.

Yeah, our talented students would not be sitting here today without your continual support, encouragement, and love. Let's give them a big round of

love. Let's give them a big round of applause.

No.

A constant amtoes de moles unapos.

Could our John J faculty, staff, and administration stand up for a moment?

That's everybody on this stage. Come on.

Thank you for believing in our students and investing your time and efforts in their success. You've inspired our

their success. You've inspired our scholars, fostered their intellectual growth, and challenged their lives with your knowledge and guidance. Let's give

our faculty and staff another round of applause.

You guys can sit now. Graduates, you

know it's all about you today, right?

This is your day to be the center of attention. Graduates, it's been a long,

attention. Graduates, it's been a long, incredible journey. We put together a

incredible journey. We put together a short video filled with some familiar faces and places to remind you just how

far you've come. I hope you enjoy it.

Welcome to the class of 2026 commencement ceremony. Congratulations

commencement ceremony. Congratulations to all my fellow graduates. We finally

hit the day that many of us have long anticipated. This is more than a

anticipated. This is more than a ceremony. It's a time of reflection. So

ceremony. It's a time of reflection. So

sit back, relax, and enjoy this well-earned celebration. Best of luck in

well-earned celebration. Best of luck in your future endeavors. And remember,

from here on out, your favorite breed of dog must be blood hounds. After years of showing up on campus and sitting in class side by side, we finally made it to the finish line. Take a look around

you and take a moment to appreciate all that we've been through together and all that we've learned from each other.

While our time at John J has come to a close, the community we've built together will live on. As we step into what comes next for us, remember to carry with you what we've learned at John J and to always be a fierce advocate for justice.

Please draw your attention to the Jumbotron for pre-recorded welcome remarks from Chancellor Felix Moss Rodriguez.

Hello and hola to the class of 2026.

What a great joy to share this day with all of you. I am honored to help celebrate your success on this very special occasion. My thanks to that

special occasion. My thanks to that great leader, my friend, President Mason, for her many years of committed and visionary leadership at John J.

Welcome and congratulations to our distinguished honorary degree recipients, Loni Bunch and Lydia Vya Kamarov, and to Nasser Casemini,

recipient of the John J. Presidential

Medal. To all the family members and friends of our graduates who are with us today, congratulations and thank you.

Your support has been crucial to making this milestone possible. This is your day too. To the class of 2026, you

day too. To the class of 2026, you represent the essence of our university, the talent and resilience of our city, brought together by a shared

determination to build a brighter future. That has always been the power

future. That has always been the power of CUNI. And all of us are connected by

of CUNI. And all of us are connected by a simple belief. Potential is everywhere and opportunity should be there, too.

Today, you join an alumni family more than 1.6 6 million strong, each of whom started exactly where you are sitting

today. This is why I am so optimistic

today. This is why I am so optimistic for you.

I know that you might feel a sense of uncertainty about what comes next.

Between the rise of AI, a challenging job market, war, and entrenched political and ideological divisions, we could say that the world right now is

not looking that great.

I am not here to tell you that everything is going to be easy, but you are not going to be the first generation to graduate with doubts.

Many who came before you faced their own difficult times and had to navigate an unpredictable world.

It is fitting that your graduation coincides with our nation's 250th anniversary. Throughout this history, we

anniversary. Throughout this history, we have gone through dark and seemingly hopeless periods.

We have always found the strength, the compassion and the will to confront what diminishes us and reach to what is in

the best of all of us. Many of you were born elsewhere or have ties to other countries and maybe there are times you don't feel welcome here.

But looking back through our history, that has also been a big part of the experience of being American. We come

from everywhere.

We work hard. We find a way forward. And

if we don't like what we see, we change it. And I must say that New Yorkers,

it. And I must say that New Yorkers, especially CUTUNI students, are specially suited to face adversity with

optimism, courage, and hope.

How do I know that? Because you are already tested.

Many of you, the class of 2026, arrived at CUNI remotely during the COVID pandemic, or as we were still

emerging from its disruptions.

Many of you have had long commutes to classes and taken trains and buses at night to get home. Many of you work while studying to help pay the family

bills or raise a child or help a parent.

Many of you are the first in your family to graduate college. You are already used to kicking doors open for yourselves.

The world is uncertain. Yes, it's always been that way, but it has always also been full of opportunity for those with the preparation, the grit, the

principles, and the character to pursue it. You all have those qualities in

it. You all have those qualities in abundance.

And remember that it is not all about making money. CUNI's mission has always

making money. CUNI's mission has always been about the public good. Today, this

torch is being passed on to you. Vote,

volunteer, mentor someone coming up behind you.

Help your community. Carry the torch for the next generation.

It's your story now. Live it. Make the

best of it. Enjoy it. As you step into your next chapter, I only ask that you don't ever forget about CUNI. We sure

will never forget you. Please know that we will always have your back and this is always your home. Congratulations,

class of 2026.

Please welcome to the stage board of trustee Lorraine Cortez Vasquez.

Good afternoon. Good afternoon,

President Carol Mason, distinguished families, guests, friends, and most importantly, you, the graduating class of 2026.

Congratulations to you all. This is your day.

You're going to hear us mention the class of 2026 a few times this afternoon. And every

time you hear it, I want you to remember this is about a celebration of you. I

want you to bask in it. I want you to cheer. I want you to clap because you've

cheer. I want you to clap because you've earned it today. You worked hard for this honor. Some of you, as Fellow has

this honor. Some of you, as Fellow has said, had a lot of responsibilities to get here today. You cared from families.

You worked.

Some of you had jobs before and after class, but throughout all of that, you persevered.

There are many uh honorary degrees that we're giving today. And one of them I am really proud to talk about, which is our

honore uh Dr. V. uh Lydia V. Ya Kamarov.

She just told me what that meant, and I'm going to have her say that later.

She's a distinguished scientist and a leader in biotechnology and bio research. And then I had the honor to

research. And then I had the honor to meet uh another one that we're honoring today, Dr. Lenny Bush III, who was receiving the honorary degree in

recognition for his extraordinary contributions to history, culture, and public understanding.

He was the creator of the National History Black History Museum in Washington DC as well as the Smithsonian. Yeah, that's something to

Smithsonian. Yeah, that's something to be very proud of. And Dr. Nesa Kmensi, the recipient of the president's male uh medal of honor, whose work as a business

leader, an entrepreneur, and a philanthropist reflects a deep commitment to opportunity and service.

Though they may not be here with us today, we are proud to recognize them and their achievements at this celebration.

I also want to recognize your valadictorian.

Sonia Manning, student council president and saludiatoran uh Jamila uh Richmond, all who are being graduated today. And

you heard about them a little bit in that screen.

It's my distinguished honor to stand before you uh as part of the trustee. As

I said, today is a day of applause. So,

applaud for yourself again, class of 2026, photographs, embraces, and the happy challenge of competing

with each other for those fabulous caps.

Some of those creative designs are something to behold. I am love watching you. And also for all of you who wear

you. And also for all of you who wear the sashes of the countries of origin or the countries where your family came from, I want you to know we stand proud

with you in celebrate. Yes. celebrating

those sashes.

You arrived at this moment through demanding study, practical training, determination to your education and to your profession.

And some of you, as Fellow said, came here from other places. Some of you, like me, were born and raised here in New York. Others came from other

New York. Others came from other countries. Some were bought by the

countries. Some were bought by the families from other countries. All of us in the United States, unless you came on the Mayflower, are immigrants. And so we

celebrate your history, your country, where you came from. And we stand proudly with you representing all of those countries because those are the

CUNI stories. That is the strength of

CUNI stories. That is the strength of community is our diversity and our perseverance.

You know some people say if you educate a man you educate an individual but if you educate a woman you educate a

family. Well I believe that as a woman.

family. Well I believe that as a woman.

But the larger truth is what CUNI stands for which is when you educate anyone with talent, determination,

purpose that affects and reaches far beyond that individual. It affects their children, the siblings, your

neighborhood and future generations.

And that is what CUNI is.

So many of you stand on the shoulders of some great great uh ancestry, some people who came here through hardship. So for all the mommies and the

hardship. So for all the mommies and the poppies and the abuelas and the abuelos and the mommy and the dies and the aunties in the room, thank you. Thank

you from the bottom of our heart for making this day possible for this class of 2026.

You earned this degree from John J and today you're setting a path forward.

But I just heard something a few moments ago from Dr. Lonnie Bush who we honoring with whom we honor today and he said

wherever you turn me turn me in the direction to do good. So wherever you go from here on in, make sure that you do

it in the direction to do good. That is

how you honor John J, the Justice Avengers, the Advocates for Justice. So

class of 2026, congratulations.

We are proud of you. We honor you and I can't wait to see all the things you accomplish.

Please welcome to the stage the president of the faculty senate, Professor Karen Kaplowitz.

Hello, Madame President, honored guests, esteemed faculty,

beloved families, and the class of 2026.

A few Few minutes ago, as you saw, I had the great honor of carrying this mace as I led the procession through the

auditorium and onto the stage.

In countries all over the world, graduation ceremonies are taking place at which a mace is being proudly carried

aloft in the same way. Because this is a tradition, a ritual of college graduations that

goes back to the Middle Ages back 700 years.

Originally, the mace was a weapon of war, used to brutally beat and kill an opponent.

Then the mace evolved into a ceremonial object, a symbol of the authority of a university over its own affairs,

of a university's independence from external authority. And that is the way it should be.

And so the mace is a symbol of the evolution from choosing physical violence to choosing words and ideas,

debate and dialogue.

This particular mace that I am holding was designed 60 years ago by students at John J's very first graduating class.

Indeed, it's the actual mace that was carried at that very first graduation.

Today, more than 3,000 of you are graduating.

Our first gra our first graduating class had a mere 118 students.

What an amazing college you have helped us become in such a very short time.

On behalf of your professors, I wish you a life of service and meaning.

Through such a life, you will be repaying your debt to John J.

Every day that you contribute your knowledge and experience to society.

Every day that you raise your children to value and embrace learning, every day that you live just and good

lives, every day that you tell your John J story, you help ensure that the future and

reputation of our wonderful college remains strong and great. Those of us

who have had the honor and pleasure of teaching you, of mentoring you,

and championing you are so very, very proud of you.

Thank you for having been our students.

Thank you for having chosen John J.

You and your professors have forged a unique bond over these years, a bond that will

always exist between us. And so we, your professors, send you our love and our heartfelt congratulations.

Congratulations, class of 2026.

Welcome back to the stage, President Mason.

Now, I'd like to introduce everyone to two very, very special special members of the class of 2026.

Yes, your class of 2026. making sure she knows that she will be the class of 2026.

Our first our honorary degree recipients are Dr. Lonnie G. Bunch III and Dr. Lydia Via Kamarov nominated by Dr. Karen Kaplowitz, English associate professor

and president of the faculty senate.

Yes, she'll be back with us. And Dr.

Edgardo Sanabria Valentine, biology adjunct assistant professor and prism associate program director.

Dr. Via Kamarov's groundbreaking discoveries have positively impacted the scientific and medical fields worldwide.

And Dr. Bunch's exemplary work at the Smithsonian has greatly expanded the exploration and representation of African-American, Latino, and women's

history. Today, Dr. Bunch and Dr. Via

history. Today, Dr. Bunch and Dr. Via Kamarov officially become a part of the college community and part of the class of 2026. Please enjoy this video

of 2026. Please enjoy this video featuring Dr. Lonnie G. Bunch III who could not be with us today.

It is my great privilege to introduce Dr. Lonnie G. Bunch III. I am Karen Kaplowitz, associate professor of English at this college. I nominated Dr.

bunch because he is a truly great scholar and public servant. He is a historian and educator whose life's work has helped our country better understand

itself. As the head of the Smithsonian

itself. As the head of the Smithsonian Institution, which comprises 21 museums and 21 libraries and many additional

research institutions, he leads one of the most important cultural and educational organizations in the world.

And as the founding director of the Smithsonian's National Museum of AfricanAmerican History and Culture in Washington, DC, he helped build from the

ground up a museum that has transformed how millions of people engage with American history. What is most

American history. What is most meaningful to me about Dr. Bunch's work is not only its scale, but its purpose.

He has devoted his career to preserving truth, broadening public understanding, and making history available to everyone. His example reflects the

everyone. His example reflects the values we embrace at John J. Knowledge,

justice, service, and impact. It is a true honor to have nominated Dr. Lonnie G. Bunch III.

G. Bunch III.

Madame President, it is my privilege to present to you and to this assembly Dr. Lonnie G. Bunch III.

Lonnie G. Bunch III.

Dr. Lonnie G. Bunch III has been a fierce advocate for justice. John J.

College of Criminal Justice confers upon him the doctor of letters honorous causes. He um came to lunch today to

causes. He um came to lunch today to accept his honorary degree and some of us got to thank him in person, but he's got a video for us that will thank everyone in the audience for this great

honor.

Hello. What a grand and glorious day. I

wish I could have been there in person to celebrate this moment with you, but I am with you in spirit. Thanks to the school's administration for recognizing me with this honorary degree. I'm

humbled by the honor. Today, you

graduate into a world critically in need of people who live the John J. College

of Criminal Justice motto, be a fierce advocate for justice. It is an ethos close to my own heart. I simply choose history as my preferred weapon in that

fight. Most of you are probably unaware

fight. Most of you are probably unaware of Studs Turppo, the late great author and oral historian who I came to befriend when I lived in Chicago.

He was fascinated by people and what made them do the things they did. Studs

spent a career interviewing people, examining their lives. As he told the Guardian, "I'm celebrated for celebrating the unseleelebrated."

When I knew Studs, he was in his 90s.

And he once said to me, "Lonnie, I can't see too well. I can't hear a thing. And I can't stand for long. So

thing. And I can't stand for long. So

here's what I want you to do. Make sure

you point me in a direction where I can do good."

do good." And maybe that's the best part of using history, to teach each of us, to point each of us in a direction where we can

do the most good. That means helping a nation grapple with its complicated past, but also fixing the inequality and inequity that impede our progress

towards a more perfect union. Thanks to

John J. College, you now have the tools to do so. You are a foundation not only of what justice is, but a notion of what it should be and what it could be for

all. As the nation observes its 250th

all. As the nation observes its 250th anniversary, there are endless examples of fairness and decency and righteousness in our history. We only

need to look to those for inspiration.

Abundant too are examples of people of groups opposing those virtues. If we

hope to create a better nation and a better shared future for all, we must listen to the former and reject the latter. So, I encourage you to take the

latter. So, I encourage you to take the lessons you have learned here to heart.

Remember your time at the eye and how the building's transparency shed light on your work. Commit to the effort it takes to rebalance the scales of

justice. Remember, embrace the wisdom of

justice. Remember, embrace the wisdom of your school's namesake, the nation's first Chief Justice of the United States, John J.

In a 1786 letter, he wrote, "To contend for our own liberty and to not and to deny that blessing to others involves an inconsistency not to be excused." Sage

words, Sergeant 40 years later. So,

thank you again and a heartfelt congratulation on your achievement. I look forward to seeing

achievement. I look forward to seeing this graduating class fiercely advocate for justice in the years ahead. Thank

you so much.

It is my great privilege to introduce Dr. Livia Via Comarov. I am Dr. Edgardo Anabria Valentine and I have the privilege of serving as associate director of the program for research

initiatives in science and math at John College. I nominated Dr. Dr. Vidya

College. I nominated Dr. Dr. Vidya Komarov because she's a pioneering scientist, an extraordinary leader and a powerful advocate. In 1975, Dr. Via

powerful advocate. In 1975, Dr. Via Komarov was the third Mexican-American woman in the United States to receive a doctorate degree in the biological sciences. Her research was a milestone

sciences. Her research was a milestone in the birth of modern biotechnology. As

part of the team that demonstrated that bacteria could be used to produce insulin for human use, her work made possible lifesaving therapies that have benefited millions of people around the

world, including me. Her scientific

contributions span various disciplines as she has advanced discoveries that have deepened our understanding of diseases like Alzheimer's, helped find cures for viral infections, and revealed how our environment can impact the

molecular biology that underpins human development. What makes her

development. What makes her accomplishments so inspiring is the way she has paired scientific excellence with public purpose as one of the founding members of the society for the

advancement of chicanos and native Americans in science or sacas the largest multicultural STEM organization dedicated to the advancement of Hispanics and Native American students

in STEM. Her efforts have helped open

in STEM. Her efforts have helped open doors for generations of underrepresented students and scientists through her leadership, mentorship, and service. It is a true honor to have

service. It is a true honor to have nominated Dr. Lydia Via Comarov as she received the honorary degree from John College of Criminal Justice.

Madame President and graduating class, it is my privilege to present to you and to this assembly Dr. Lydia Vija Kumarov.

Dr. Lydia Via Kamarov has been a fierce advocate for justice. John J College of Criminal Justice confers upon her the doctor of science honorous CASA and you

will hood her.

First of all, thank you for this great honor and first first of all, congratulations graduates. This is the

congratulations graduates. This is the beginning of the very beginning of the rest of your life and you will make a

difference. I want you to remember that

difference. I want you to remember that whatever field you're in, whether it's science or forensics or literature,

there is truth and there are facts. And

if you let those two things guide you, you won't go wrong. It's been a great privilege in my life to work with students like you and to work with

scientists at the boundaries at the beginning of things when you can discover what is not yet known. It's a

very exciting journey you're about to embark on. I congratulate you and I look

embark on. I congratulate you and I look forward to seeing some of the things that you will accomplish. Thank you

again.

It's their misfortune to have a short president.

The next award that I want to present.

I'm doing my own thing. So,

yeah. Our presidential medal of honor award was established in 2006 and it's been awarded to an individual or organization that has demonstrated leadership, contributed to the college

and shown a deep commitment to the principles of justice, equity, and equality. I have the distinct pleasure

equality. I have the distinct pleasure of bestowing this year's award to Dr. Nasser J. Kazamini. Unfortunately, Mr.

Nasser J. Kazamini. Unfortunately, Mr.

Kazamini is unable to join us today, but I want him to see this recognition on video. His impact on the college is

video. His impact on the college is ultimately reflected in the students sitting before you. Born in Iran and educated in England, Mr. Kazan and his family immigrated to the United States

in 1969.

Here he developed his career as an entrepreneur and philanthropist. His

professional experience in technology, finance, education, media, and security spans over five decades.

He has employed over 20,000 people and helped create more than 1 million jobs.

Currently, Mr. Kazimini serves as the chairman of the Ellis Island Honor Society. In this role, he has championed

Society. In this role, he has championed cultural diplomacy, education, and global goodwill. Mr. Kazamini stands on

global goodwill. Mr. Kazamini stands on the conviction that the diversity of the American people is what makes this nation great. That's why his partnership

nation great. That's why his partnership with our college is so meaningful. He is

committed to providing access and opportunities to everyone, amplifying our collective human potential.

Since 2018, he has built vital resources for our students that provide wraparound services that transform lives. Thanks to

Mr. Kazamini's philanthropic support with the Ellis Island Honor Society.

Over 9,600 students with diverse backgrounds, experiences, and challenges have reached life victories that m mirror Dr. Kazamini's own remarkable

journey.

I would like to thank Mr. Kazamini for standing by us, with us, and for us. We

are fortunate to have his empowering partnership. So, please join me in

partnership. So, please join me in congratulating Mr. Nasser Kazamini in receiving the Presidential Medal of Honor Award.

Please welcome to the stage your 2026 valadictorian, Sophia Manning.

Uh hello everyone. My name is Sophia Manning. Please forgive me if I sound

Manning. Please forgive me if I sound nervous. I've never sat in front of a

nervous. I've never sat in front of a group this large. Um, first I'd like to thank all of the people in my life who made this happen. To my friends, family, and community. Um, to my parents and my

and community. Um, to my parents and my sister for seeing me through my worst so that I could be at my best. Um, and to all of the peoples whose lives have touched mine. I'm only a person through

touched mine. I'm only a person through other people. I'd like to thank

other people. I'd like to thank professors Richard Haw and David Green who have provided me so much support and guidance throughout my time at John J.

I'd also like to thank the interdisciplinary studies program for being my home at the college and the anthropology department for endispute resolution program for all that I've learned there. It has been nothing short

learned there. It has been nothing short of a privilege getting to study alongside a group of such passionate, intelligent, and justiceoriented individuals. The four years I've spent

individuals. The four years I've spent at John J have been so inspiring because of the students I've learned alongside.

I hope that each and every one of you is so proud of yourself. You have been on a transformative intellectual journey and you have seen it through to the end.

As the class of 2026, we are taking our next steps in turbulent times. While we

have been hard at work at John J, the social and political world we are living in has grown more and more fraught and uncertain. As students of justice and

uncertain. As students of justice and people of conscience, we are all the more aware of the injustice and oppression that has come with the rising authoritarianism in our government. To

be at a graduation at a criminal justice college and not acknowledge that would be out of touch with the reality of the lives we are stepping into. But as

graduates of John J, we have learned to be fierce advocates for justice. This

knowledge inspires and grounds me when I think about about the ways that we will move forward as agents of justice in the world.

In the words of Chrisel Mint Galloway, I believe that you must love the people more than you hate the empire. You must

love immigrants more than you hate ICE.

You must love trans people more than you hate transphobia. And you must love

hate transphobia. And you must love Palestinians more than you hate the USIsrael war machine.

I am not telling you not to be angry or not to hate these things, but I do believe that a better world can only be built out of our love for each other.

Like the wisdom Bel Hook shared, our anger must be our compost for the garden in which this better world is grown.

The struggle is connected. We are

stronger when we remember that.

Last year, Mammud Khalil, a Palestinian student activist and at Colombia and lawful resident of the United States, was abducted by masked ICE agents, transported illegally across state lines

against the orders of a judge and held as political prisoner for 104 days at an ICE detention facility in Louisiana.

During his internment, Khalil missed the birth of his firstborn. In a letter to his newborn son, he wrote a line that I can't stop thinking about. Cleo writes,

"One day you might wonder why people are punished for standing up for Palestine.

Why truth and justice feels ta dangerous to power. These are difficult questions,

to power. These are difficult questions, but I hope our story shows you this. The

world needs more courage, not less. It

needs people who choose justice over convenience."

convenience." Congratulations, class of 2026. Be brave, let love guide you, and never stop fighting for what is right.

Alrighty, class of 2026, are you out there?

Yeah. So, by reaching this milestone in your life, you've demonstrated academic excellence, public service, and a passion for learning. While deepening

your justice focused knowledge, you've also gained new perspectives, participated in civic engagement, conducted innovative research, and

uplifted your communities. The class of 2026 represents a diverse mosaic of experiences, backgrounds, and

culture, including immigrants, veterans, military service members, first responders, student parents, non-traditional students, and first generation college

students. If you're wondering what I'm

students. If you're wondering what I'm doing, I'm getting my tissues ready.

While it would be impossible to share every incredible story of every student in the class of 2026 because you all have remarkable stories, I think that

the following students journeys will inspire everyone in the audience. So

the first story I'd like to highlight is Indira Barrows. And I

Indira Barrows. And I and I learned not to say Indiraia because are her parents here? because

she told me her mom would not like it if I pronounced it wrong. So, where's

Indira?

Where are you? The light's supposed to go on you. Okay.

She also happens to be our There she goes. Our student council treasurer.

goes. Our student council treasurer.

Most of you know Indira in her unwavering support of her fellow students and her love for science as a cell and molecular molecular biology major and as the person who fiercely

guards the money of the student activity association.

I try to send people to her for money when I don't have enough and she quickly sends them back to me because she is guarding your resources. But there's

more to Indira. Few of you know about the challenges that she had to overcome to get to this moment in her life.

During the fall semester of her freshman year at John J. The apartment above hers went up in flames. The firefighters put out the flames, but the damage was so

extensive that her ceiling crashed down and flooded her and her aunt's home.

After getting over the shock, Indira and her aunt moved from shelter to shelter.

This is the dedication of our students.

When they finally got back to their apartment, there was no electricity.

To keep up with her studies, Indira would study on campus as long as she could, recharging her devices and using the Wi-Fi. Thank you, the library, for

the Wi-Fi. Thank you, the library, for keeping it open for her. When she

finally came through the impact of the fire, Endear made it her mission to help all John J students experiencing challenges that could block their pathways to success. After shadowing a

John J alumna who was a pharmacist, Endura knew that she had found her calling.

Endurance will be attending Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences to get her PhD in pharmacy with a $20,000 a year scholarship

for the duration of her program.

Please join me in congratulating Endira.

The next student story I'd like to share with you comes from quite a distance.

New Zealand to be exact. Where's Maya?

There you go. At 18 years old, Maya Levis moved from her small town in New Zealand to the biggest city in her country, Auckland. There she got a job

country, Auckland. There she got a job in the central police station. While

working in the station, Maya witnessed how the criminal legal system often caused more harm than good. She became a p she became passionate about public

service, equality, and the law. Maya

made up her mind to attend a justice focused college in America, and she set her sights on John J. That deserves a round of applause, people.

For those of you who take John J for granted, she came all the way from New Zealand to be in this class of 2026 with all of you all. After moving halfway across the globe, Maya became a

philosophy major. Where's Michael

philosophy major. Where's Michael Brownstein?

Yeah, a philosophy major and interned with the New York City New York State Attorney General, the Bronx District Attorney's Office, and the Brennan Center. She is clearly an overachiever.

Center. She is clearly an overachiever.

Because of her commitment to public service, Maya won a Carol Robas Roman Award for legal excellence. She was the inaugural in the inaugural class of this

scholarship, honoring a wonderful Hunter commute alumnist and former CUNY Board of Trustees member. This fall, Maya will be attending Georgetown Law School.

Let's give her.

And she hopes to become a prosecutor for the Southern District of New York. She's not

going back to New Zealand. Let's give

her a big round of applause.

Okay. Where's the spotlight on Joshua?

Joshua Hall.

Okay. So, our next student story is about Joshua Hall. I always tease him because he is everywhere. I see him as a peer adviser. Every time I turn around,

peer adviser. Every time I turn around, Joshua's there. And I frequently get

Joshua's there. And I frequently get lost in the halls. And I know that if I see Joshua, he can lead me there. Joshua

is a human services and community justice major. Joshua came to John J

justice major. Joshua came to John J intending to join the police force like his father who works in public safety at Brooklyn College. You see a theme here

Brooklyn College. You see a theme here with Joshua.

Brooklyn College. Okay. I like the fact that you all are saving your applause for John J. Thank you. He started out at John J taking a lot of police science courses and corrections classes, but

they never felt like the right fit for him. Wait, is your dad here?

him. Wait, is your dad here?

Where is he? Would you stand up?

Okay, I know you're over there somewhere. Um, we're sorry he's not

somewhere. Um, we're sorry he's not following in your footsteps, but I know there he goes. But I know you're happy.

So, what did right to him was programs he got involved in in my brother's keeper connect ASAP ACE the black student union urban male initiative and the office of student transition

programs Joshua thrived in these programs that allowed him to understand his identity on a deeper level and be a part of a

community with other men of color one day his adviser asked him a tough question why do you want to become a police officer he didn't a good answer. Then she asked

him what he truly wanted to do with his life. And he realized that he wanted to

life. And he realized that he wanted to work in higher education, creating and leading programs like the ones that supported him and his success. I'm happy

to report that Joshua will be attending Monontlair State University's master's degree in education program.

In the future, he hopes to become a higher education program director, maybe even at John J. But today at lunch, he said his sight's even higher. He wants

my job. And you know what? I want you to have my job, too. So, let's give Joshua a round of applause.

The last but not least story that I'd like to share you is that of Kareem Richardson. Kareem, I know you're over

Richardson. Kareem, I know you're over that way somewhere, too. Kareem, another

philosophy major. I'm not sure what's going on here, Michael from Brooklyn, New York. When Kareem was younger, he walked past John J. Just the

sight of the college intrigued him and made him want to attend. That interest

only deepened when his cousin Shereice Randall, a John J alumna, told him that John J was a place where issues of

justice were taught differently. She

explained that John J justice that at John J justice was seen through a lens of community research and social societal advancement. Are you looking at

societal advancement. Are you looking at her now? Because I know your family's

her now? Because I know your family's over there. Armed with this knowledge

over there. Armed with this knowledge and a deep desire to pursue a degree to better his and his family's life, Kareem jumped at the opportunity to enroll in

John J's prison to college pathways program. Throughout the program, he

program. Throughout the program, he found professors and mentors who truly listened to his ambitions and supported him as he moved closer to his goals.

They made him se feel seen and respected. These dedicated mentors

respected. These dedicated mentors championed Kareem's dream to earn a degree and helped him become the first person in New York State to secure

educational release. This opport Yeah.

educational release. This opport Yeah.

Please applaud This opportunity allowed Kareem to take upper level courses on John J's campus.

At first, the new environment made him nervous, but then Kareem focused on the bigger picture, earning his degree.

His family, including his wife, Vanessa, Vanessa, I know you're over there, son Cavon, and daughter Lyanna, inspired and motivated to keep him going. When Kareem

could not figure out how to design a homework project in Canva, his 12-year-old daughter stepped up and showed her dad the way. And she also won

$15 from him.

When Kareem started to worry about his GPA, his family pushed him to do his best with a bet on whose GPA would be the highest.

Lyanna won, by the way, with a 4.0 versus his 3.9. So,

all of Kareem's work paid off when he attended the Otisville graduation ceremony, our first graduation ceremony in partnership with the Burough Manhattan Community College at Otisville

Correctional Center. There, his natural

Correctional Center. There, his natural talents shined. Kareem's energy, passion

talents shined. Kareem's energy, passion for supporting his fellow students was abundantly apparent. He used his

abundantly apparent. He used his experiences and knowledge to bring people together to learn new perspectives. The positive impression

perspectives. The positive impression Kareem made on Dr. Bos Dressinger, one of our faculty members, was so strong that she sought him out for his contact

after information after the event and she plans to hire Kareem to work at the Incarceration Nations network. I'm

excited to the report that Ba is in a position on the spot that he hardily accepted.

So, please join me Congratulating Kareem and his family.

Class of 2026, you can see in your fellow students stories. If you work hard and set your

stories. If you work hard and set your mind to a goal, there's nothing you can't accomplish. Big dreams, graduate,

can't accomplish. Big dreams, graduate, dream big. Big dreams come real. Stay

dream big. Big dreams come real. Stay

connected as alumni and remember that John J will always be your home. We look

forward to watching your continued success. Thank you.

success. Thank you.

So, this is the fun part of the program.

You're going to get to come up here.

This is the moment you've all been waiting for. The conferring of degrees

waiting for. The conferring of degrees you have worked hard to earn.

Espado diplomas on par.

Yes. I want to make sure all of the families understood what was happening next. Provos Peace, will you assist me

next. Provos Peace, will you assist me in conferring the graduate and undergraduate degrees? And I'm going to

undergraduate degrees? And I'm going to flip to the right page.

BLOOD HOUND.

It might seem crazy.

I'm a hot air balloon that could go to space like baby.

Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof. I'm happy. Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth.

I'm happy.

Clap along if you know what happiness is to you.

Clap along if you feel like that's what you want to do.

Come bad news and give me all you got. Don't hold it back.

Well, I should probably warn you, I'll be just fine.

No offense to you. Don't

clap along if you feel like a room without a roof.

Clap along if you feel like happiness.

Clap along if you know what happiness is to you.

along bring me down. Love is too high. Bring

me down.

I said bring me down.

Bring me down.

Bring me down.

Because I'm happy.

Clap along if you feel like a room without a roof.

Because I'm happy.

Clap along if you feel like happiness is the truth.

Because I'm happy.

Clap along if you know what happiness is. You

is. You clap along if you feel like that's what you want to do. Because I'm happy.
