Greetings viewers. A very excited Eric the car guy here today because before the end of this video, this shop will be painted and well illuminated. And the
purpose of this video is to illustrate your workspace and the lighting and the color of the walls, the painting of those walls, and how that will affect your workflow. For me, I do video, so I
your workflow. For me, I do video, so I need as much light as possible. But I
also believe that if you're doing repair work or you're doing anything that you're doing inside of your shop, it's good to see what you're doing. And I
think a good way to do that is to upgrade your lighting. And I'm going to be doing that today in this video. Let
me show you some footage right now of this shop after I first moved in. So, I
hadn't done anything at all. No paint,
no cleaning, no anything. Well, up to this point, I've painted the walls most of the way. I've installed one of the lights that I planned to that I had planned to upgrade, but before the end
of this video, as I mentioned, I'm hoping to install the rest of the lights and complete this paint job. If nothing
else, it's going to be a great before and after video. So, keep watching. Now,
a big part of this video is about painting your workspace or making it reflect as much of the light inside it as possible. And for doing that, I
as possible. And for doing that, I strongly recommend just painting the interior of your space white. That's it.
Unless there's some other reason where you have to paint it a different color.
If you're looking to get as much light into that space as possible, go with white and be done with it. Now, me, I have sort of special concerns and that is I shoot video. And one of the things
that cameras sort of have a little bit of trouble with is setting their what's called white balance. And when they do this, every other color is calibrated from that white balance. So, if the camera doesn't get the white quite
right, none of the other colors are right. So everything else is off from
right. So everything else is off from there. Cameras are much better at
there. Cameras are much better at interpreting whites on a gray background. In fact, I always set the
background. In fact, I always set the white balance on my cameras with a gray card in the past. So I figured, hey, what if I painted the interior of my shop a gray color, making it easy for my
camera to interpret colors and therefore I'll have a good white balance. Well, so
far, hopefully you're seeing in this clip, it's working out. However, it does take away some of the light that I'm adding into the space. So, I am losing a little bit of that light, but the
exchange is less time in the edit bay having to do color correction. That's
why I ended up doing this. But if you're going to paint the interior of your space, strongly recommend just go with white. You'll be fine. And if you're
white. You'll be fine. And if you're wondering what color this is in the background that I chose, it is called reflection from Sherwin Williams. Most of the shop is painted and I hope to complete that today. But these are the
lights that I will be installing and they are from Hyperllight and these are their LED high bay lights. Hero series
is what these are. And frankly, I'll plug one of these in for you. I believe
these are going to make a night and day difference. They're going to be five of
difference. They're going to be five of these total that will be installed. And
when they come in the package like this and this hook that you screw on there.
So that's that's how they're suspended.
Now the wiring is just going to be a plug. And I'm going to convert all of
plug. And I'm going to convert all of the uh wiring that's up there now that's just directly into the lighting to plugs that I can just plug these into. There's
also this little safety wire thing here as well. But I'll show you my rig for
as well. But I'll show you my rig for for hanging these things up. But as I said, I believe these will be a significant improvement. Let's plug it
significant improvement. Let's plug it in and I'll show you the difference of what I'm going to get out of this. And
here's one of the neat things about this type of light is you can just plug it in to test it. So, all I've got to do is plug it in. And look at that. Wow.
That is a lot more light. And in fact, you could see that light in a room that's fully lit. You know that this is going to be significantly brighter. I'm
going to get these guys installed. And
then we'll see uh what the shop looks like then. Here it is, yours. The thing
like then. Here it is, yours. The thing
that I was waiting for, the scissor lift. I'm going to get in this thing.
lift. I'm going to get in this thing.
And the first thing I'm going to do is I'm going to go in and turn off the circuit breakers for these lights. And
I'm going to remove all of the these overhead lights. That way when I paint I
overhead lights. That way when I paint I I don't have to worry about painting that area there. But this has already been painted around. But once I remove it, it'll expose the area that needs to be painted. I'm going to finish all the
be painted. I'm going to finish all the painting after I get all these lights down. And then we'll get the new lights
down. And then we'll get the new lights installed. Uh that's that's the play.
installed. Uh that's that's the play.
And I think I'm going to start over here since this is going to be the most difficult. But that's why I got this
difficult. But that's why I got this extension on this lift so that I can go out over the stairs here and take care of everything around that window. That's
likely going to be a time lapse for you, but we'll get into more detail here in a minute when we start installing the new lights. It occurs to me that I should
lights. It occurs to me that I should probably show you really quick how I'm mounting these lights uh to the ceiling.
And what I'm using is one of these big uh loops here. Pretty stout, heavy duty.
Uh and I'm also using just a regular plug to plug everything into. So, I'm
converting everything over to this. Uh,
and the reason why this loop will work with these lights is because they have this little screw in top here that, uh, goes into this hook that you can use.
And that's how mine will be hanging.
There's also, I think I mentioned, a safety hook, which I will also hook up there. And if you're wondering, there's
there. And if you're wondering, there's uh an extra set of wires here. I believe
these can change color or something like that, some other module or whatever, but you have to wire all that up separately.
I'm not using that. I just want regular lights. So, we'll just be plugging these
lights. So, we'll just be plugging these in. I'm not so good with heights, so I'd
in. I'm not so good with heights, so I'd rather not be up there with a camera.
I'd rather be up there the least amount of time possible. But, I think you perhaps like me are very interested in the result more than anything. Well,
viewers, there it is. The ceiling is all painted. My nerves are afraid cuz well
painted. My nerves are afraid cuz well that thing's kind of wobbly. But I've
got to go up a couple more times. I've
already installed two lights. That way I had some light while I was here. This
light is on a separate circuit. I have
four more of these to install up in here, but they're all ready to go. All
right, viewers. It's been all day, but all the new lights are installed.
That one over there is already on, obviously. But I'm going to turn these
obviously. But I'm going to turn these guys on for the first time.
Are you ready?
Whoa.
Now, that is a well-lit shop. Holy
smokes, the difference. Holy smokes.
Like, I'm going to show you footage of when I first moved in here as compared to now.
And just compare the difference. And
even though the walls are darker because of that gray, it is still so much brighter. Like so much brighter.
brighter. Like so much brighter.
Yeah. Let's turn the light switch on and off just to show you again. Lights off.
Lights on. Wow. I just can't stop saying it. Wow.
it. Wow.
This is like the best lit shot that I've ever had and I am ecstatic about it. All
right, since I got this lift uh and it's still daylight, I'm going to clean the windows real quick and well then I'm going to put this stuff away. But then
I'll be back and we will redo these lights here to match these lights up here. and we will complete our shop
here. and we will complete our shop lighting and painting video. Well,
viewers, the shop is, as the kids say, lit now. All those hyperllight, high bay
lit now. All those hyperllight, high bay lights are freaking amazing. And I I just love living in all this extra light. And I'm sure the camera is
light. And I'm sure the camera is enjoying it, too. But there's still one more area that I want to address, and it's these two lights under the mezzanine area. And I I plan to replace
mezzanine area. And I I plan to replace those with the same hexagon type lights that I did in the upper mezzanine area.
Although there are going to be two different sets of lights down here. Now,
I I know I haven't covered a whole lot of detail on how I'm hooking these things up to the electricity.
The consensus on social media when I put this out there was rather than cutting wires and tying directly into the electricity coming in from the wall or behind the wall as the case may be, uh
they prefer to switch it over to a receptacle that you just plug into.
That's what the lights come with. They
come with regular plugs. So, that's what I've been doing. And I plan to cover that part in a little more detail here, especially now that I know a little bit more about what I'm doing. So, let's get started with that. Here is the before
shot. And I've taken some time and
shot. And I've taken some time and cleared everything out from in here.
First thing I'm going to do is turn off the breaker. Well, it looks like both
the breaker. Well, it looks like both the upper and lower mezzanine are on the same circuit.
With the lights removed, we just have some wiring. We can pretty much put the
some wiring. We can pretty much put the plug wherever we want. And I'm thinking since I might want to utilize this area down in here that I might put the plug
right here so that I can access it. I
think that would be really nice to have.
I'm not going to call myself a professional electrician, but this is how I do it.
That part of the job is complete.
And technically, we can go to turn the breaker back on.
Well, no pops or bangs or anything. I
guess we did it right. These are the Hyperlite hexagon lights that I will be installing next. And this is the box
installing next. And this is the box they come in. I don't know if you can use that QR code or not. Try it. Here's
the stuff in the box. Well, not all the stuff. I've just paired it down to uh
stuff. I've just paired it down to uh just the stuff I need to pre-assemble before I install stuff up here. And
that's what I learned last time is that it's a good idea to just assemble everything on the ground and lay it out where you think you might want it to go.
And that way you can just transfer it up to the ceiling. As I mentioned, these plug in, but you can put this plug virtually anywhere. It just goes into
virtually anywhere. It just goes into one of these pieces with uh three ends on it. You
just choose one and use that to plug into and it powers up the rest of the light. They're not all like this. Some
light. They're not all like this. Some
of these are just two. So, you can make it in lots of different shapes, but I've got the cords so that I can just sort of generally see where I stand as far as where I place my plugs and where I'm
going to place these lights. All right,
viewers. Here is my layout. I ended up with one extra on this side after combining uh the remnants of what was left in this box and this box. I have
found there's just like a little bit left over. Uh I've also placed the power
left over. Uh I've also placed the power cords in areas where uh well they will plug in easily. I also tested everything to make sure that it worked before it
goes up in the air. Now it'd be really great to have a buddy right now to hold up the other side of it and position it where it needs to be and everything. I
don't necessarily have that. So I may have to do this like a piece at a time.
Uh I'm going to time-lapse that and then we'll get a look at the result.
Everything is installed. I think it looks pretty good. I almost wish I would have got it further in this way, but I'm not that worried about it because now that I have those lights, I'm starting to think about lights for under the cabinet. But we'll talk about that at
cabinet. But we'll talk about that at another time. But I'm sure you want to
another time. But I'm sure you want to see what it looks like now. Wow.
Yeah. Let's go back to that initial shot showing everything. So, let's do the
showing everything. So, let's do the comparison before and after.
I like the after personally, but I think it needs one more thing. Let me work on that. Be right back. Now, it takes a
that. Be right back. Now, it takes a second to come on, but I think that's a excellent finishing touch, don't you? And by the way, that
is also from Hyperllight. Well, viewers,
I'm going to call that a spectacular result. Like it is to say night and day
result. Like it is to say night and day seems rather cliche, but it's true. It
feels like I was working in a cave before and now I've come into the light.
Glorious light that pours out everywhere and I can see stuff. If I drop a screw on the floor, I'm going to be able to find it. I'm pretty sure I'm going to be
find it. I'm pretty sure I'm going to be able to find it. 10 mm sockets, not so sure. But I think you can see the
sure. But I think you can see the benefits of adding lighting to your workspace. Additionally, cleaning the
workspace. Additionally, cleaning the walls, painting them white. I I would suggest painting them white. I did mine gray because of a video thing, but if you paint yours white, it'll reflect more of the light and you'll have more
light in your space. Dark colors make things look smaller. Light colors open things up. So, lighter colors, get
things up. So, lighter colors, get yourself some really great lighting. Big
thanks to Hyperllight on this one. I'm
going to link them down in the description and all the stuff that I used, uh, including that guy there. I
hope this information was useful to you.
I certainly had fun and I I loved looking at the before and after of all this and I hope you do too. Thank you so much for watching today. If you have automotive questions that I did not
cover here, ericthearguy.com is always there for you. That'll be linked in the description along with, as I mentioned, tons of other stuff. So, if you have any questions, check the description.
Otherwise, I want to thank you so much for watching today. Be safe, have fun, stay dirty, and I'll see you next time.
We should be working on some cars then.
