alright hey guys today we're doing a new video in Adobe After Effects and I will be going over how to create cell phone transitions and it doesn't have to be with the cell phone you can do these
transitions with anything that has a screen so maybe a billboard or a television or anything like that so I'll give you guys a quick preview of what
the transition looks like when we're done and it's gonna look something like this actually it's gonna look a little bit better than this but this is just really quick practice on how do you do the
transition so there are two ways to do this transition and this is the zoom in transition the other way is that it's just the opposite so we're gonna start out of our footage and it's gonna
actually zoom out into a phone both are basically just doing the opposite of each other so in this video I will be going over how to do the zoom transition which I think is probably the one that
people will want to know how to do more and if it's needed maybe sometime in the future I could do this room out transition but for now I think we're gonna stick with the zoom in transition
it looks pretty cool and we can jump into the tutorial so we're gonna start off in a new composition it's 1280 by 720 and it's 30 seconds
long and we're gonna select okay so the only thing we really need is some footage that has a device where has a screen so this footage is actually
perfect for us it's just someone tapping their cell phone the only thing is it is a little bit short it's only one second long so I'm going to go up into layer
time free time stretch sorry and set this to 150 so we have almost two
seconds to work with and now I'm going to pull in our timeline and what we're gonna do is we're going to move right to
the end of our footage so right here and we're going to scrub through and we're gonna find where the movement in the hand is so don't worry about any movement on the screen but just focus on
the hand you need to find where the hand moves so right here we see the hand move so we're gonna go one frame forward so this means that this
hand will not move for the rest of the footage so what we're gonna do here we're gonna hit control shift D I'm gonna split this layer and now we're
just gonna set layer time freeze frame so what this does is it gives us a lot of room to play around with this it it's really gonna make the transition a lot
easier to do in the future because now if we set a mask we know that we only need to create one mask and we don't have to track any motions so there are
several reasons for doing this but we're gonna see them later on in the video so we have our freeze frame now basically instead of video source this is like an image and it makes it a lot easier for
us and we're gonna set a mask right now so selecting the pen tool make sure you have your top layer selected and I'm gonna hold H on my keyboard which will allow me to get the hand selector right
here now I'm gonna deselect H and I'm gonna set a mask point like that so really quickly I'm just gonna go and mask this
out and it doesn't have to be perfect because we can always mask feather it so let me just really quickly set a mask here
alright that looks pretty good so we have our mask again it isn't perfect but we're gonna hit em on our keyboard to m4 mask which is gonna open up this mask
value right here and we're gonna change this from add to subtract and if it does look a little bit rigid we can always go into our mask feather and set this to
maybe like eight and just blur it out makes it look a little bit nicer so that looks pretty good now I'm gonna close that and we need our
background footage so this is what I have for our background footage simply a character standing there so I'm going to
scale it up just make sure it fits and now our footage only has to be sorry my throat's a little bit dry our footage
only has to be where our freeze-frame is so I'm just gonna move it over using the square bracket which if you don't know is really close to the backspace bar so
we're just gonna set that underneath make sure that matches alright so that was all really background work now we're actually gonna work with the keyframes
and set up the zoom transition so the way we do this is we're going to use a null and a camera and I'm gonna go up
into layer oops layer new camera and I'm just on the 15 mm preset I'm gonna hit OK
all right and we need to grab a null object just like that so this camera we're gonna grab the pick whip which is this tool right here and it's going to
parent to the null so just drag and drop it onto a null let me quickly rename this to our control and now cameras and null objects
will control all of your movement for 3d layers so what we want to control right now is only this top layer right here so we're gonna make sure that this is set
to a 3d layer and now make sure you have your null object selected and now we're gonna click our pan behind it's gonna move our anchor point right here so this tool and we're going to select our
anchor point and make sure it is set to the middle so this is gonna make it a lot easier for us in the future so that looks pretty good and now when we create
our zoom and we work with scale and position and rotation keyframes it's gonna go right to where our anchor point is so we won't have to move it around
too much so I'm gonna hit s on my keyboard for scale I'm gonna hit shift P to open up position and shift are to open R is rotation and I don't think we're gonna need rotation here but you
can always keyframe it if you want to but I'm just gonna select keyframes for position in scale all right so then
we're gonna move across and we're gonna set keyframes at the end and just like that we have those set up you want it to start there and we want to scale through
so we're gonna start with the scale you want to pull it so we scale through like that and now the thumb is the only thing that's really in the way so we can move
position slightly just to get it out of view and that looks pretty good so instead of spending a lot of time on
the graph editor I'm just gonna select all of the keyframes I'm gonna right click pick keyframe assistant and select easy ease so if we preview through you
can see that we have the phone zoom just like that and that looks pretty good now we have to work with our background footage so we need this to also zoom in
and what we're gonna do is we're also gonna set scale and position keyframes and maybe rotation keyframe so I'm gonna set all these up and we want to make
sure that these keyframes are in the same location as the keyframes we set earlier in the null object so that everything matches up we're going to set
our three keyframes and now we're gonna move right to our first keyframes and we want to scale this out and it's okay if you see some of the black spaces that's
all right I'm gonna scale it out we're gonna rotate it and position it's already in the center you can see that right here but if it's not you can
always position it over so this looks pretty good but we do not want to see these black bars so I'm going to go into our our effects and presets we're gonna find motion tile and I'm going to drop
that into our background footage I'm gonna increase the height I'm going to increase the width so that when we hit mirror edges it should be a lot less
noticeable and again we will have motion blur enabled so it won't be too obvious oops so hitting you in case you close your keyframe value editors we're gonna
select all of them and again I won't go into the graph editor I'm just going to easy ease them all so we have the zoom part down and now I'm really quickly
going to preview it so you can see where we are in the video we have the zoom transition and that looks really really good but we just want to make it look smooth and we want to add some extra
stuff to make you look really really good so the first thing we're going to do is we're going to enable our motion blur so
I'm going to select that right up here and now on all the layers all of our footage layers we're going to make sure we have motion blur selected this is
going to add blur and make sure that when it zooms in it's looking as smooth as possible alright so the actual zoom in the transition doesn't look too bad it looks really good
the only thing I want to change is how choppy this comes in so it just instantly comes in and we want it to fade in so what we're gonna do is we're
going to duplicate our freeze-frame top layer and we're gonna hit em on our keyboard m4 masks and we're gonna change this to ad and now I'm gonna hit T for opacity
and I'm a keyframe opacity at 100% and then I'm gonna scrub through I don't want to take too long and I'm going to set it to zero so this is going to give
us a nice fade instead of having it really chop having it really choppy so that looks pretty good the final thing
that it will add we have motion blur and everything but I don't really like how this is duplicating here so this is a
really cool trick if you ever have that problem where motion tile is not looking as well as good as you want what you can do is create a new adjustment layer and
we're gonna grab fast blur from our effects and presets drag and drop it into our adjustment layer pull up the
blurriness select repeat edge pixels and now if I just hit a mask set a mask maybe
make sure you select the mask very far from the edges you can have this lured
oops right here where that motion where that motion tile is giving us that not
so good effect and now if I hit em on our adjustment layer open up this mask find the feather just feather it out a little bit it'll give us a gradient for
the blur so that looks good I might drop it stuff I thought looks pretty good all right so
it's not that noticeable but it did really hide the fact that the motion tile didn't work out so well right there and it does make it look a little bit better and we're done our transition it
was pretty fast and it does look really cool so let's preview through a couple
times and see what we finished with so that looks pretty cool pretty cool
yeah the only thing is this footage is actually automatically zooming in but if it's not you can always scale it so you
can always make sure that you can what you can do is you can pre compose it because we already have a scale keyframe
set up and now you can just have it scale so just like that so I think I covered literally everything you can do with the zoom transition and I hope you guys
enjoyed this video or learn something new again if needed in the future I can always go over the Zoom Out transitions but I'll try to get back to posting
weekly tutorials and thanks for all the support we'll see you next time
