Hey y'all. Hi. So today I am presenting to you two different pathways towards good outfits. This type of thing, it's
good outfits. This type of thing, it's often called an outfit formula, but as I always try to do, I am going to be giving you strategies that will be flexible and applicable to you
specifically instead of trying to make you fit a certain mold. These two outfit concepts or like maps like outfit maps, they are really about silhouette kind of
regardless of overall style. They are
about the interplay between the parts of an outfit, the relationship between the clothes you're wearing and the way that you style yourself otherwise. If you're
new, I'm Hannah. Check out my book. I'm
a poet. I make videos about fashion and beauty, blah blah blah. Let's just get right into the meat of the video.
Briefly, this is my yearly reminder that Julia Frodall's compassion class is coming up. It's starting in April. I am
coming up. It's starting in April. I am
already enrolled. I'm taking it again for the third time. I haven't taken the compassion immersion since before my kid was born, so a few years ago. In my
lifetime, I have taken it twice, and it has been life-changing both times. So,
I'll link it below. I know I've talked about Julia's work extensively before, and a lot of you already have it on your radars. Julia is an extraordinary guide
radars. Julia is an extraordinary guide to the inner life and I feel like we need that now more than ever. I am
really feeling that way and that's why I decided to enroll in this course again.
Okay, number one starts with a tight top. Building an outfit around a tight
top. Building an outfit around a tight top, a bodycon top. When I'm feeling lost getting dressed, I really want to feel good and I'm just uninspired. I
want to feel like I look good and I want to feel like in my body, but I'm just uninspired and I'm not really feeling good. I almost always find success if I
good. I almost always find success if I start with a tight top. And here is where I feel like one can go from there pretty easily and in a way that kind of
will work across a bunch of different scenarios and a bunch of different styles. So you put on your tight top and
styles. So you put on your tight top and then pair it with a bottom half of your outfit that's dramatic in some way. This
often has to do with volume. So a tight top and voluminous pants. Sometimes the
pants can be dramatic in another way, like voluminous printed pants or voluminous pants in a statement color.
Those pants that you have a hard time figuring out how to wear, you know, pair them with a tight top. It could also be a skirt. It could be baggy shorts, loose
a skirt. It could be baggy shorts, loose shorts, statement shorts, a maxi skirt, again, a voluminous skirt, a printed skirt, right? So, a tight top and then a
skirt, right? So, a tight top and then a bottom half that is in some way statement. Much easier to wear
statement. Much easier to wear effortlessly if you you've started with a tight top. So that's sort of the silhouette part, the clothing part, the core. Then styling and accessories.
core. Then styling and accessories.
Here's my suggestion. Because of the nature of the core of the outfit, make choices for the rest of your styling that are casual and undone. So I think immediately of hair accessories around
like the neck and ears and hair, you know what I mean? Like up here, this is the part that relates the most to your top. So, if you're wearing a tight
top. So, if you're wearing a tight snatched top, a bit of bed head, a bit rumpled, a bit smudged, maybe less makeup, you know what I mean? Or less
polished makeup, a bit didn't try too hard, a bit messy, right, in this area.
And then the other key and crucial part of the way that an outfit presents, shoes. So, I suggest to go with kind of
shoes. So, I suggest to go with kind of the undone styling up here. Flat shoes,
casual shoes, walkable shoes, non-statement shoes, shoes that feel effortless to you to wear and look like they are kind of effortless and comfortable because you are really like
torso forward in your tight top and then you're doing another statement thing as well, which is the voluminous bottom half. So, you can kind of downplay and
half. So, you can kind of downplay and blur everything else and you end up with something quite balanced. So, I'm going to show you pictures of many different outfits that fit these parameters, and
I'm going to dig into a couple of them and kind of talk through them. But
before I do that, a very quick word from my wonderful sponsor today, Bowlan Branch. My husband and I took some
Branch. My husband and I took some unprecedented but much needed time off in the middle of last month. And one of our main projects was finishing our bedroom. Since we moved into this house
bedroom. Since we moved into this house just over a year ago, it has only really been semifunctional. It was getting kind
been semifunctional. It was getting kind of depressing and like musty feeling in there. We really went for it. We
there. We really went for it. We
finished it. And part of the upgrade was this perfect bowl and branch bedding.
These are the signature vintage wash sheets and vintage cream. And the
fabric, I said this before, it it has that it factor. You know, there's white cotton and then there's white cotton.
And then there's cotton like this, which just feels it's like better than fancy hotel bedding because there's a sense of authenticity and true coziness about it.
Maybe like a boutique hotel in the Italian countryside. Those are the
Italian countryside. Those are the vibes. It's bringing me so much pleasure
vibes. It's bringing me so much pleasure when I get into bed at night, especially with this closet that we put in, this warm glowy lamp that we added, and the waffle bed blanket from Bowl & Branch, which is the thickest, best quality
version of this type of thing that I have ever seen. It feels like a new room. It feels intentional, but it feels
room. It feels intentional, but it feels lived in. Frankly, it's more relaxing to
lived in. Frankly, it's more relaxing to be in there than it was before. Side
note, too. This is the first duvet cover I've ever had that zips at the bottom instead of buttoning, so there's no sagging and shapelessness. Everything
about this bedding has delighted me. So,
a huge thank you to Bolan Branch for contributing so much to our bedroom refresh. Okay, let's look at some photo
refresh. Okay, let's look at some photo examples of, for lack of a better word, outfit formula number one. Starting with
two outfits actually from Posh Heat. I
will link the Pinterest board on which I collected images for this video. So, if
you want to track down any of these models or influencers, you can go to the Pinterest board and you'll be able to find them that way. Posh Heat is a great follow on Instagram. And this is kind of like the summer and winter version of
the same outfit following this theory.
So, let's look at the summer one. A
fitted top, right? A bodycon top. Not
super super tight, but bodycon showing the body yada yacht. And then the pants are a statement in a couple of ways.
They're voluminous. They are brightly colored. And just starting with those
colored. And just starting with those two, already the outfit's kind of sexy, effortless, and there's a cheekiness, a sense of style about it because of the way that those two things are combined.
And then for hair and shoes, it's exactly what I said, right? Hair is
beautiful, not a mess, but also not super polished, right? There's a sense, there's a casual sense about it. And
shoes as well. sneakers go perfectly with this summer version of this outfit.
And I love that the winter version is the same color story, right? We can't
see the shoes here, but this is an effortlessly fitted ribbed cream colored sweater. The pants are a statement in
sweater. The pants are a statement in that they are also orange. And then I I put this example in mostly because this is such a beautiful manifestation of the
undone hair, right? Like there is just something about the balance of the three elements that you can see in this picture. I mean, the belt is also quite
picture. I mean, the belt is also quite beautiful, but the three that we're discussing, this whole thing would read so differently with super polished or sleek hair, especially because a turtleneck, I think, kind of leans into
polish. And a tight top can kind of lean
polish. And a tight top can kind of lean into polish depending on your overall style. But in this case, it's that
style. But in this case, it's that sensual must hairstyle that's keeping it fresh, honestly, that's kind of keeping it edgy and making this outfit just vibrate on a on a slightly higher
frequency than it otherwise would. This
is another beautiful example. We can't
see the shoes. She's probably not even wearing shoes. But this is a kind of
wearing shoes. But this is a kind of tight top that I often grab when I'm starting from scratch. I don't know what I want to do, but I just want to feel good and I'm uninspired and I'm I'm like, "Okay, we're starting with a tight
top, a really tight top, maybe a bodysuit, something low cut, something that's giving, you know, something that isn't necessarily formal, but is sensual and is kind of making the shape of the
body part of the presence of the outfit, but in a way that isn't too tryh hard.
So, this top or bodysuit or whatever it is is a perfect example of a foundation for this outfit. And then the skirt, a perfect example of the second move, right? It's voluminous, it's maxi, it's
right? It's voluminous, it's maxi, it's printed, and it's a color. It's a strong color. So, it's got all of those
color. So, it's got all of those qualities going for it. And then the third choice, the undone hair. Clearly,
very beautiful hair, but it again, it's like it looks like third day hair. It's
French girl hair, right? It's really the one, two, three punch that we've been discussing. And you can totally imagine
discussing. And you can totally imagine that if she were to leave the house, she'd wear flip flops or easy sandals. I
don't know, maybe like a pair of beat up boots or something like that and it would all just be in balance. And here
is another really great example of the tight top bed head combo. And these
pants aren't as statement as all that, but the fact that they're cargo pants, the belt, there's some volume. You know
what I mean? This wouldn't be reading in the same way or wouldn't be like hitting these same notes that I'm suggesting if this outfit was completed with just like a regular pair of jeans, just like
regular fit, slim jeans, denim in a regular color, you know? So, they're the pants are they're not aggressively statement. They are fitting the brief,
statement. They are fitting the brief, right? In a subtler way. And this as a
right? In a subtler way. And this as a tight top is just perfect. Perfect. Of
course, the aesthetic here is more casual is a bit alt, but a top in this exact silhouette in just a plain cream color or black or something. If you are
trying to apply this outfit formula to dressing for your corporate job, which you totally can, you could essentially do the same thing. Just if the pants were trousers instead of cargo pants, a belt exactly like this, and a tight top
like this, exactly the silhouette, but it's black. And then hair exactly like
it's black. And then hair exactly like this, right? slightly undone hair, not
this, right? slightly undone hair, not super polished hair. Everything's still
hanging in balance in the same way. I
love this example because again, it's like the perfect juxtaposition of the bold fashion confidence of a very tight top with the sleepiness of hair that
hasn't been like worked on too hard.
Like like we didn't spend a lot of time on our hair this morning. We woke up like this and we put on this tight top.
It is just a surefire way to kick off an outfit. So let's move on to option
outfit. So let's move on to option number two. Number two, this is at its
number two. Number two, this is at its heart a suggestion for how to wear loose layers. So I've talked about login look
layers. So I've talked about login look a lot lately. There's it was like a whole section and a whole video. I will
link that video in which I talked about log and look. It was like a fashion theory video that was framed as being suggestions for ways to style yourself.
I went deep into log and look and and kind of even its political history. So
I'll link that. If you haven't seen that video, I do recommend it. especially if
you are enjoying this, especially if you've made it this far today. But I
know a lot of people struggle with loose on loose as a silhouette, right?
Oversized layers on the top and the bottom. My suggestion is to pair
bottom. My suggestion is to pair oversized layers. And this is also like
oversized layers. And this is also like on a day when you feel like you can't wear anything other than oversized layers like that. So the first outfit formula for me comes from those days when I'm like gh I just need something.
I need a little something and the tight top is the thing and then we go from there. In this case, it's like I just
there. In this case, it's like I just need to swath my top and bottom half in loose garments and I simply cannot do anything else. A tight top is the last
anything else. A tight top is the last thing I would consider today. I just
cannot with it. But you need to look and feel pulled together. Like you still need to serve for some reason because your life is the way it is. That's where
this suggestion is coming from. So we
have the loose layers loose on loose.
Maybe an oversized sweater over a skirt or an oversized t-shirt over voluminous pants. To pull it together, to complete
pants. To pull it together, to complete the formula with styling, I suggest polish effort. The opposite of what I
polish effort. The opposite of what I suggested for styling the first time. So
for hair, that's going to mean grooming.
a sllicked back bun, something symmetrical, a ponytail, hair off of the face, using a little bit of product to smooth away flyaways, you know, just
keeping it simple and clean. And if
you're doing makeup, like really graphic, clean, maybe a bold lip and not much else, maybe a winged eyeliner, you know, just like leaning into polish,
whatever that is for you with the styling up here. And then for shoes, if you're doing the most, it's going to mean heels. Nothing elevates a loose on
mean heels. Nothing elevates a loose on loose outfit like a pair of heels. And
the ideal manifestation, like the complete manifestation of this outfit is loose on loose, very polished, sleek grooming, and then heels. That's like
the formula with no tinkering. But
polish for shoes can also mean kind of a statement shoe, you know? It could mean like a statement flat shoe. It could
mean a platform. It could mean just a a high fashion shoe, like a very fashion boot in a strong color that really stands out. So, you're wearing loose on
stands out. So, you're wearing loose on loose, but your shoes are showing that you have really made an effort that you've put some thought into it that it's not just swallowing you up. The eye
goes to the shoe and then sort of informs the way that the eye receives the rest of the outfit. So, it doesn't have to be heels. Maybe a slightly more formal shoe than you would think to pair with your baggy clothes. that can maybe
be the takeaway from this outfit formula for you. And that's why it works, right?
for you. And that's why it works, right?
That's the way in which this is an example of balance. Even though a loose on loose outfit doesn't always necessarily look like it's casual or slovenly or undone, I think that in terms of the way we sort of sit in our
bodies and move in our bodies, sometimes we can feel like that and then that feeling translates to the way you move through space or the way that you are perceived or the way you think that you are being perceived. So, two choices
that really signal intentionality, polish, and and snatchedness, right? So,
it's like you your body is not snatched by the clothes, but your hair is and your face is. And then your shoes are kind of like there's a sharpness, right?
So, we're balancing like the softness with the sharpness. Let's look at some concrete examples. Always the best way
concrete examples. Always the best way to continue talking about it. Okay, this
I love this example because it's a it's a bit moderate, right? This is not the most drapey, blousy, swallowing you up, oversized clothing that one has ever seen. These are not the slickest,
seen. These are not the slickest, sharpest, highest heels that one has ever seen. And this stunning sculptural
ever seen. And this stunning sculptural hair is very sleek, especially in that it's up off the face, but there is also a softness and a romance to it because of the length, right? So, it's it isn't
like maybe the first thing you might envision when talking through this outfit formula. And yet, the reason it's
outfit formula. And yet, the reason it's working so well has to do with everything that I'm suggesting, right?
So, this is a loose voluminous soft shirt over loose voluminous soft pants.
And then the heels, they look so effortless, but they're still heels, right? There's still that delicacy, that
right? There's still that delicacy, that confidence that comes from a shoe like this. And then again, the hair, the
this. And then again, the hair, the skin, makeup, total polish, crisp, even though there's softness around the edges. This is an example to me of the
edges. This is an example to me of the perfect balance between loose, soft, oversized comfort in clothing and some sharp, polished styling elsewhere. So
beautiful. Here's another one that I love this picture. I've had this saved for a long time and it occurred to me that this is an example of the way that this can be done. Clearly, the fact that this is like a satin maxi skirt here is
skewing the way that it's received. But
that is that could also just be a matter of personal style. I just I had to mention it, right? So amazing really long oversized t-shirt over a voluminous
maxi skirt. So we have loose on loose
maxi skirt. So we have loose on loose completely like shape obscuring, you know what I mean? Like a tent on top of a tent. And then the thing that's making
a tent. And then the thing that's making it work so well is this fashion shoe, which I assume has at least a little bit of a heel. You can't see it. It might be a flat, but either way, it's it has that
square toe in the front. It's
intentional and skillful and very polished hair. very clean, sleek hair.
polished hair. very clean, sleek hair.
Imagine if her hair was down and it was messy, like the way that the hair was messy in the pictures from the first example, and the shoe was less notable, like not a shoe of note. I think there
would be a question like, is she pulling it off? Like, is she pulling this outfit
it off? Like, is she pulling this outfit off or is it just a bit of a swing and a miss? It's amazing how much the styling
miss? It's amazing how much the styling can pull something right to that place of balance. And I think that this is a
of balance. And I think that this is a really good example, especially because it's just so paired down in so many ways. All right, here is a fantastic
ways. All right, here is a fantastic example of of how this can be done without heels, per se. I mean, I think these shoes are pretty wedge, but they are they aren't like a delicate heel or a sandal, which is kind of like the
thing that I've been suggesting. And
also, grooming wise, this isn't necessarily like the most snatched situation, right? This is a is a bit of
situation, right? This is a is a bit of a fuzzy beard. The hat is being worn, the beanie is being worn in a bit of a an insucient way, but overall the
balance of volume and statement is there. So clearly we have like loose on
there. So clearly we have like loose on loose on loose for clothing. And then
the shoes, they really fit the definition of polish and statement partly because they're literally polished. Like they are shiny. They are
polished. Like they are shiny. They are
patent leather and they're standing out.
So texture is playing in here. And then
there is a general sleekness and containment overall when it comes to hair and just like up from the neck up here. It's a sculptural situation. The
here. It's a sculptural situation. The
balance between the beard, the sunglasses, and the hat just generally working to balance out these oversized clothes instead of kind of bleeding into
them and overwhelming them. So, it it's not the the messiness of the hair that I was suggesting for outfit number one.
Even though there is still kind of a casual I woke up like this vibe to the grooming and styling here. I found
myself really gravitating towards examples of the way in which this is can be done aligned with my suggestions, but not in the most extreme way. Because I
feel like for a lot of us when we actually go through these four steps for any one of these two outfit suggestions, there's going to be one that's like slightly not quite the exact 10 out of 10 perfect ideal of it, but it still
works, right? The the formula still
works, right? The the formula still works. Another lovely example of how
works. Another lovely example of how this can be done without heels. Also
with clothes that are a little bit more like formality level four, maybe a little bit more work for kind of like a different workplace. I've been showing
different workplace. I've been showing you a lot of artistic like people who look like they work in fashion or something. She could work in fashion
something. She could work in fashion absolutely in this, but I think she could also be going to like any one of a bunch of different types of jobs in a bunch of different industries in this
outfit. So, it's loose on loose. It's
outfit. So, it's loose on loose. It's
not super dramatic, super oversized.
It's not like the shirt goes down to her knees or something like the t-shirt that we saw. It's just a loose kind of boxy
we saw. It's just a loose kind of boxy cropped shirt. Loose barrel cotton
cropped shirt. Loose barrel cotton pants. And the way in which it's being
pants. And the way in which it's being held in balance is exactly what I've talked about, right? sleek bun, fresh face, like fresh makeup. And then these shoes, which are not heels, but are
very, very statement. The shoes are the statement of this outfit. They are
really speaking of fashion in the context of this quite simplified hair and effortlessly slightly slouchy rumpled cotton, which is so beautiful. I
love this because of the unusual shoe choice and the way that it holds down the fort with the with these oversized clothes. So, those are my two specific
clothes. So, those are my two specific outfit formula suggestions for you and some examples of why they work. But
again, I really encourage you to try this. Try this with what you own without
this. Try this with what you own without necessarily trying to imagineer it in advance or envision it in advance. Like
just go one thing at a time. Just start
with the tight top and then once you have it on, be like, "Okay, well, what voluminous or statement bottom half do I have that I could put on with this?" And
then go from there, you know, and and see how it goes. especially playing
around with your clothes at night instead of trying to pull this off all at once for the first time when you only have 10 minutes and you have to be out the door. I hope you have fun. I hope
the door. I hope you have fun. I hope
you enjoy this and that it is fruitful for you. And I really, really appreciate
for you. And I really, really appreciate you for being here for watching. Don't
forget to subscribe and don't forget no matter what to take very very good care of yourself.
