Sang Heon Lee Talks XO, Kitty & What’s Next | DAEBAK SHOW
By DIVE Studios / 다이브 스튜디오
Summary
## Key takeaways - **Life Starts at 30**: Everyone's been saying your life starts at 30. Now I realize symbolically what the message is behind that phrase, and it gives me a sense of relief if my life hasn't even started yet. [04:40], [04:49] - **Born Korea, Raised Hong Kong**: I was born in Korea, raised in Hong Kong, and with university in England. Until mid-20s I've lived more in Hong Kong so it used to feel more like home but now Korea feels like home. [05:21], [05:54] - **Sister Pushed XO Kitty Audition**: My sister saw an Instagram post and said you should look into this role as well. I ignored her as a younger brother but 3 days before the deadline she texted please tell me you sent your tape, and I did. [12:38], [12:51] - **Skipped Drama Classes for Life Experience**: I studied drama in high school and university but missed most classes because I couldn't wake up for 9 a.m. lectures. I felt more helpful to learn by living life that people see in films rather than in a lecture room. [18:03], [19:08] - **Rock Climbing Beats Skydiving Rush**: I've tried skydiving and bungee jumping but it does not feel like rock climbing because you're at high heights with no safety gear, you literally climb a wall and if you fall you die. The fear of holding on the whole time while you might fall off anytime gives the adrenaline. [10:49], [11:28] - **Korean Underreaction to Success**: We take everything that's not good so deeply and personally but the wins and good things like 'oh of course' cuz that's the standard, the baseline, we take it for granted. I'm trying to learn to be more celebratory. [21:15], [21:33]

>> He was so confident as a high schooler, which I wasn't. I was getting bullied.
>> I think you having a meltdown.
>> DANIEL, YOU'RE FIRED.

>> Hello.
How are you?
>> Oh, wow. I haven't spoken Karina in a minute. It's the Debac Show. How are
minute. It's the Debac Show. How are
you?
>> I'm good. I'm really chilled out right now.
>> Yeah, >> it's very comfy. It's like these are the podcast interviews, that sort of feeling that I get.
>> A little cozy.
>> Yeah, the coziness. It's It's the best condition to be in.
>> Well, thank you for joining us out of your busy promotional.
>> No, actually though, thank you for accepting cuz I was like I was like, Eric, like I want to do something.
>> Of course. No, anytime. I mean, I was thinking we would shoot this in soul, but here we are in LA actually shooting.
>> Convenient, >> which is great.
>> I mean, people may not know, but we know each other through Paris Fashion Week.
>> We did. The first time we met was in Wong show and then you >> two years ago.
>> That was was that I think was that two years ago? One year. One year maybe a
years ago? One year. One year maybe a little longer than >> I don't know.
>> Yeah. You were just so gentle and just kind to me. That's how I remember your first impression. And then the second
first impression. And then the second time we met was in Korea. You were
filming something. Yes.
>> And then you took me to this sushi place.
>> Yeah.
>> I was like, >> "All right. I mean, it's summer.
[laughter] >> You want sushi?"
>> Oh, yeah. He was so skeptical about having sushi in the summer.
>> You It's weird. Like,
>> okay. No, listen. We live in a modern world with technology. It's called
refrigeration.
>> I don't trust >> and freezers. You [laughter] don't trust. Look, everybody's doing it.
trust. Look, everybody's doing it.
Everybody's doing No, but I realized obviously people in Los Angeles they eat sushi here, right? Which for me I'm thinking that's bonkers. Like I'm like no cuz like summer like that's when the
fish can go bad easily and if it's not taken care of properly by the restaurant you can easily get like the stomach aches and all that. And I was like in a hot weather you want sushi. I was like hey but I still came and then it was
actually really good.
>> There you go.
>> It was amazing. It was actually so that's why I thought okay Eric has good taste. [laughter]
taste. [laughter] That's good. I saw Eric last night. Was
That's good. I saw Eric last night. Was
it? No, not last night. Two nights ago in the Unforgettable Gallow and you were performing and that was the first time I heard your song which is good by the way.
>> Thank you. Thank you so much.
>> Great. Thank you very much.
>> But at the same time when you were coming off the stage I was just thinking ah please don't say hi. Like [laughter]
>> it's not because like it's nothing like that. It's more like I have a fear of
that. It's more like I have a fear of like attention >> really.
>> Yeah. Like, so like the irony behind my job as an actor, like the fact that I was even presenting that night >> scared the hell out of me. I was like, "No, but you're good."
>> I was like, "No, I was faking the [ __ ] out of it." Like,
>> but you know what? I feel like everybody is. Everybody is. Even, you know, we we
is. Everybody is. Even, you know, we we present like we're confident, but inside we're freaking out.
>> But you guys are so good. Like
>> every time even I get on that stage to sing, I was like, "Oh my god, this is going to bomb." Oh my god. So, there's a reason why when you came off the stage as you were singing towards the tables, I was like I didn't know what to I was
like [laughter] you passed by. I just didn't want the camera to see me. That's all.
>> No, you're great. You were dressed.
>> You No, you were great.
>> Thank you. I appreciate it. And what's
your hair? Is it Is it What What's going on? It's very legaly. Is it How long is
on? It's very legaly. Is it How long is it going to go?
>> Um, mostly probably cut it off like May.
I don't know. Just It's got to get hot in Korea. I don't want this hair
in Korea. I don't want this hair >> a lot to maintain. Yeah, and you can't really start it too much and even if you know how to do it, it takes a while. So,
I usually wear a hat. So, for me, I'm like, what's the point of this long hair then? But again, but the reason why I,
then? But again, but the reason why I, you know, grew this hair, everyone's been asking, "Is that for a role?" I'm
like, "No, like unfortunately not."
>> I thought you going to be in like Game of Thrones or something, [laughter] >> you know?
>> That would be interesting. But it was just for me because I was like, I'm going to turn um 30 soon.
>> Uhhuh. And I was thinking, might as well go blonde or do something new with the hair. I just wanted to try something new
hair. I just wanted to try something new before I turn 30, which is like in May.
This this year in May.
>> Happy almost birthday.
>> Thank you.
>> How are you feeling right before 30?
>> Nothing different really.
>> Yeah. I don't think it will change to be honest. But although I do I have to say
honest. But although I do I have to say I'm excited to turn 30 because it's more like >> I've been hearing since I was young like everyone's been saying like your life
starts at 30. I like what does that mean? And then now I realize
mean? And then now I realize >> symbolically like what the message is behind that phrase.
>> Yeah.
>> But it also gives me the sense of relief where >> if my life hasn't even started yet.
>> Oh this is great. [laughter]
>> Yeah. I mean, you haven't hit 30 and you've already you've been doing incredible work. You've been doing
incredible work. You've been doing really cool things.
>> I'd like to think so.
>> Oh, absolutely. Mostly.
>> Yeah. No. So, I mean, for the people who don't know, we have to get into some of your your background.
>> Tell the peoples where were you born or raised, where you grew up, and explain the accent cuz I think a lot of people are probably like, "What is going on?"
>> Got you. Um, I always that short intro.
Um, I was born in Korea, raised in Hong Kong, and with university in England.
Yeah.
>> UK realize sometimes I do sound Australian.
>> Yeah.
>> Because of the American accent I had before and then the UK accent. If you
combine it together, it's Australian accent and which makes sense.
>> What feels like home to you? until
mid20ies I've lived more in Hong Kong >> right >> so Hong Kong used to feel more like home but now it's more like >> yeah I feel Korea is like home I would I can imagine myself living there or have
a house there >> but I would just travel more >> once in a while because yeah it's a compact city >> um we got too many people in the city it's >> a lot of people
>> we need Thanos like [laughter] >> we're not killing anybody here Okay, >> I just want to play a quick game called Under Seven. I'll go back and forth
Under Seven. I'll go back and forth giving you a prompt. You have to name as many things as you can under that prompt in [music] 7 seconds. Are you ready?
>> Yeah.
>> Name as many romcoms as you can in 7 seconds.
>> Oh, look at this.
>> Nodding Hill, Mama Mia, How to Lose [music] a Guy in 10 Days, uh, Eve Time, >> Revenant, Inception.
>> No, no, no way.
[laughter] Uh, can you name as many K-pop songs featured in Exo Kitty?
>> Oh, so Oh, in Exo Kitty. Oh my days. Uh,
>> XOXO by TW Birthday. Uh, I'm not sure.
Whatever. EXO. Like, I have no idea. I
don't know any of the songs.
>> Fair. I don't know any of the K-pop.
Wow. He hates his show.
>> Daniel hates his own show.
>> Any of the Korean K-pop songs.
>> Daniel hates K-pop. [laughter]
>> No, that is not true.
Name as many actors you've worked with in 7 seconds >> that I've worked with >> that you've worked with.
>> Dave Bautista, Steven Yan, Kiwi Kuan, KaT >> I went through one movie and I was like >> places worth visiting in Soul.
Uh, >> this guy is just trying to be like a Korean hip-hop rapper. Just [laughter]
like dropping towns, >> towns and towns.
>> Eric, as many swear words as you can.
>> This is such an easy question.
>> Swear words as I can.
>> Yeah, [laughter] we're from English to Korea.
>> Now, last one for you. Um, as many ExoKitty characters as you can name.
Kissy, Mino, Jake, uh Q, uh Yuri, uh Juliano, um Oh my gosh, why am I fumbling? [laughter]
fumbling? [laughter] >> On that note, make sure you guys watch ExoKitty season 3 streaming now on Netflix.
>> It's the Debac Show.
>> So, travel can be very overstimulating.
Don't get me wrong, I love to travel. I
live life on the road, quite literally.
[music] But when you're working and you love your job and you job your love, it can be really hard. So here's a trick.
If you're like me, you're in [music] backtoback flights to trains to cars to sound to interviews to shows, late dinners, late night conversations, and
also like shooting a music video. You're
on from the moment you wake up. One time
I was in London shooting a music video, and I was like, "These hotel rooms [music] are very small. I want a place that has a living room that has a kitchen where I can breathe. So, we got
this wonderful place and it was so nice and it was so luxurious. Not only did I maintain my sanity and my mental health, I didn't hate everybody. And that's very important when you're [music] traveling
because who wants to be around a grouchy person when they're traveling? Not me.
So, if you're planning your next trip, make sure to check out Airbnb and give yourself the place to really unwind, relax, wherever you are in the world.
Airbnb, we love it.
>> It's the DOT show.
>> Well, I know one thing that you like to do a lot is rock climbing.
>> Actively rock climbing. You have a a full Instagram page just dedicated to that. What got you into rock climbing
that. What got you into rock climbing >> and what does it do for you? Because I
look at rock climbing and I think that is how I die and that looks so difficult and painful. Those are the thoughts that
and painful. Those are the thoughts that come to my head not oh my god this looks so fun.
>> But I'm pretty sure that so when did you that when that first thought came through about like oh that looks really painful that must be really physically hard. When was that like was it like
hard. When was that like was it like nowadays or was it more like a few years?
>> No. So here's the thing. When I used to do rock climbing afterwards, I would be so exhausted. [laughter]
so exhausted. [laughter] >> Yeah. Yeah.
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> And then, but here's the thing. I had a friend, he took his friend rock climbing and they jumped off and he shattered his spine.
>> Got you. Oh, wa. Okay. That's
>> So, he couldn't walk for like months, >> right? That that's
>> right? That that's >> he landed wrong. So, I was like, I will never do that again.
>> Even I've been through some injuries myself, but but at this point, I can't really say I just love it. It's more of an addiction.
>> Is it What do you feel from it? Is it
adrenaline?
>> Adrenaline and um all the weird um hormones that go through your body when you're excited like fight or flight sort of emotion you go through.
>> Is there anything else that gives it to you like skydiving or bungee jumping?
>> I've tried skydiving. I've tried bungee jumping. It does not feel like rock
jumping. It does not feel like rock climbing because Yeah, you're at sometimes you're at high heights like when you're outdoors lead climbing.
>> The sky diving and the bungee jump like it ends when you basically land.
>> Yeah. Same feeling as rock climbing, but then at some point um you don't have any safety gear. Like you literally climb a
safety gear. Like you literally climb a wall. If you fall along, you Yeah. die.
wall. If you fall along, you Yeah. die.
>> You don't die as much as skydiving or like bungee jumping. But it's it's not the same feeling cuz you only that falling feeling is when your adrenaline hits, >> right?
>> But when you're climbing, you don't you don't spend most of the time falling.
You spend most of the time on the wall climbing up.
>> And that's the fear. Like you hold on the whole time. You might fall off anytime.
>> So, what you're telling me is you're a masochist.
>> Maybe >> you like pain. [laughter]
>> This is fun though. I like I like the I like the sport. I think it's actual a proper sport.
>> What I like the best out of it is it makes you lose weight. It keeps your life excited >> without, you know, flying or fighting, >> right?
>> In actual real life. Um, man, it's such a good community, >> you know? Like I I've never met a a climber who's a dick. Like even if they are, they're probably
>> good at masking it.
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> You're promoting the new season of Exo Kitty, season 3, which is streaming on April 2nd on Netflix exclusively.
>> How did you end up landing the role >> for ExoKitty, >> which is still such a massive >> show and I is it is your first main role right?
>> Yes, that was my debuting.
>> How did that happen? My sister saw an Instagram post >> and she was like, I've went for this role and I got pinned and then she said, "You should look into this role as
well." I ignored her [laughter]
well." I ignored her [laughter] >> as a younger brother. And then later on, like 3 days before the deadline, she texted me again saying, "Please tell me you sent your tape."
>> And I've never made a tape before that back then. I didn't even know what to
back then. I didn't even know what to do. And she was like, "Okay, I'll send
do. And she was like, "Okay, I'll send you something." She sent me like what an
you something." She sent me like what an example should look like and I was like all right you know what it's not like I didn't have the passion for it for me. I
just thought how can I possibly land this role >> because it's like it's an it was an open audition. I was like there's no way I'm
audition. I was like there's no way I'm going to get it and so on Netflix I was like there's no way I can get this but I was like 3 days in >> I was like you know what I'll read it.
I'll give it a go and I'll send it. No,
I sent it and then I got a call back after like a few weeks >> and then so and so and here we are. I'm
doing the Deb show after four years.
>> How did you start acting? And was this something you always wanted to do?
>> In high school >> there was that career counseling moment in school where they would ask you what are you interested, what was your passion, have you found it and all that.
I told my counselor I like to dance. I
want to be a dance choreographer. And
then and then I can see it.
>> And then she was like saying, >> "Yeah, let's not do that." [laughter]
>> I was like, "Oh, that's >> ruining your dreams." Before they even started.
>> I was like, "That's savage." Like, "Oh, my counselor." Like,
my counselor." Like, >> but then she was like, "Is there anything else you like?" And I was like, "Um, I like watching films." >> And she was like, "Oh, you could be a film critic."
film critic." >> But then back then when I was young, I thought I mean there was somehow people around me who was much older, they were like hating the jobs that they were in.
And I asked them before like what job like why did you land on this job? It's
either they're really good at it or the money was good or like they just had a passion or love for it.
>> But then they still end up hating their job sometimes. Obviously they have bad
job sometimes. Obviously they have bad days but I didn't >> think about that so deeply. I just
simply thought right if you choose something you love you might hate it >> and I didn't want to risk or lose the enjoyment of actually watching films
>> and make it as a job. So simply I thought I'll just be someone in the TV or screen.
>> Got it.
>> And I can still enjoy films or life.
>> Got us.
>> What are your what's your favorite film of all time or favorite director if you have one?
>> Wow.
>> Favorite director. I think I've watched a lot of Quinton Tarantino films. >> Uhhuh.
>> Scorsese films. >> Yeah.
>> David Fincher films maybe.
>> Got it.
>> Recently I've been watching that a lot.
I think Korean films I got to say Pongjun >> of course >> and Pakano >> of course. I know there's some several rising directors now. They were actors
before and they've been making films now. Jason Baitman, was it? Yeah, Jason
now. Jason Baitman, was it? Yeah, Jason
Baitman. Yeah, he he used to be an actor and now he's directing, producing.
>> Yeah, that sort of feeling. Ooh,
actually I do have this Japanese film I watched recently.
>> Amazing. You should watch it.
>> What is it?
>> It's called Look Look Book or Look Back, I think.
>> Okay, send it to me.
>> Yeah, it's it's such a short film. It's
like an hour long film. It's not a 90-minute film or even shorter, but I promise you, you will you will text me that thing like, "Oh, it is so good."
Yeah.
>> All right, we're going to play this game called gaze. We're going to look at some
called gaze. We're going to look at some eyeballs and try to guess which celebrity it is.
>> I'm going to be so bad.
>> Yeah. No, these are probably people that are related to you in some way.
>> Really? I imagine.
>> Oh, it's got to be easy.
>> Is ready, set, go.
>> Line of contour.
>> Yeah. Line of Wait. Oh, wait. I thought
we were doing this together. We are
enemies as of now.
>> Fair enough.
>> Chloe, >> I have no idea. Oh, wait. Is this going to be your co- Anna?
>> No.
>> Oh, IT'S ANNA.
>> OH MY GOD.
>> NO WAY.
>> That's crazy. Wait,
>> that's Anna's eyes.
>> Oh my days. Now I can see it.
>> Hey guys, I just want you to know I got it.
>> He did not.
>> Sorry, Cath.
>> It's 3. It's 3.
>> Kon.
>> Okay. 31. Is that Gia? I have no idea.
>> No, that's not Gio. [music]
>> Is it a It's a K-pop girl.
>> Give us a hand.
>> No. Is it Jizu? Jenny.
>> Jenny.
>> Come on. Give me a tie. It was tie. Tie.
Tie.
>> Gia.
[laughter] >> Dude, you're going to be disowned by your entire family.
>> Well, clearly I don't look at people's eyes, then. [laughter]
eyes, then. [laughter] >> All right, let's go.
That's somebody on your side.
>> Is is is this person wearing a ski mask?
Why is it all [laughter] Why is it all like >> you? Okay, this is You should be Excuse
>> you? Okay, this is You should be Excuse me.
>> Jazelle, >> that's really >> Is that how you pronounce your name?
>> Jazelle.
>> That was a hard one.
>> That was a hard one. Wait, what?
>> Is this Pion?
>> There you go.
Eric killed it.
>> Well, yourself. [laughter]
I think I owned you.
>> You pretty much did.
>> I think I dominated you.
>> Yeah, domination nation.
>> It's okay. I hope you're better on the next game.
>> It's the debac show.
>> You we're like, "Okay, I don't want to hate film, so I'm not going to be a film critic. I'm going to become an actor."
critic. I'm going to become an actor."
That is an incredible thought to have because becoming an actor is also very, very hard, right?
>> Yeah, I think so.
>> So, did you take like classes? Did you
have lessons? Did you were you auditioning? Like, how did this happen?
auditioning? Like, how did this happen?
I did try to take lessons like I did take I mean I studied drama in high school and university >> but honestly I've got to say it didn't really help me
>> and the reason why I can say that is because I missed out most of my classes.
>> I was I was I was a late >> Were you out there partying? No, no. I
was sleeping like I couldn't wake up from my 9:00 a.m. lectures
>> and I'm pretty sure I mean I to a point where I think the professor asked me like who are you? And I was like that's funny. I'm the only Asian kid in your
funny. I'm the only Asian kid in your class. And I realized she's just being
class. And I realized she's just being you know sarcastic. It got really bad to a point where the professor was saying you can't you know I think they used to call me Daniel. Daniel you can't graduate. I was like what do you mean
graduate. I was like what do you mean like you've missed too many classes?
[laughter] And I was like am I like done? They're like, "Well, if you miss
done? They're like, "Well, if you miss like two more, that's it." And I was like, "Got you." Okay. So, no more missing classes. So, I started attending
missing classes. So, I started attending classes, but it was way too late. Like,
but okay. But I feel like it's not even about me missing classes. It was just about the process of learning in a lecture room. Like, it just didn't feel
lecture room. Like, it just didn't feel right for me. I felt more helpful in my life and towards my career by actually living the life that people see in films
>> because that's not learned from the textbook of someone like lecturing.
>> It's from based on actual people who went through that or from their imaginative thoughts, right?
>> So that's why I felt like okay I'm going to live my life to the fullest and you know use that as my textbook. So that's
how I approach it.
>> Yeah. No offense to the people who study drama or who who admire it. I I'd say if that helps you, keep going. Don't stop.
You're a great little saver. But for me, I'm like, >> well, I think that maybe explains why I I think you're extroverted and you're I don't know how you feel about that. Like
you're >> Oh. Um, I was extroverted, but nowadays,
>> Oh. Um, I was extroverted, but nowadays, as you know, sometimes I remember I keep telling you I don't like to go to those after parties or whatever, but >> I'm like I I think now I turn very
introverted because I now feel like I like my circle of friends. I don't like that to make it bigger. But at the same time, I'm not I don't immediately >> just shut down people that's new.
>> Right. Right. Right.
>> But I do need to get to know you a few at least. Let's have a meal. Yeah.
at least. Let's have a meal. Yeah.
>> Or like hang out. But sometimes it has to comes from my gut feeling.
>> But I don't feel like hanging out then.
That's just how it is. It's
>> I mean that's totally fair.
>> Nothing wrong with the person who I'm speaking.
>> There might be. But it's not >> Maybe. Maybe. Maybe.
>> Maybe. Maybe. Maybe.
>> It's okay. [laughter]
You know. Okay. Okay. So, you got the role. Did you freak out?
role. Did you freak out?
>> So, here's the thing. I'm not a sociopath. I swear down. Like
sociopath. I swear down. Like
>> that's what sociopaths say. Sociopaths
[laughter] say I swear I'm not a sociopath.
>> Oh, it's just I don't know. Sometimes
there are emotions where okay anything if I feel good about it or something surprising for me it's like oh wow okay but anything that's the other side like
very negative bad I feel it so deeply >> so when I hear someone like complimenting me or I get hear good news I'm like >> yay good but let's move on like that's
our Koreaness >> is it >> I feel like that's so Korean I really think it's so Korean I was I thought about this the other day I was like I take everything that's not good so deeply and personally, >> okay?
>> And then like the wins and the good things that we're just like, "Oh, of course." Cuz that's the standard. That's
course." Cuz that's the standard. That's
the baseline, you know? We take it for granted. And I think it's I'm trying to
granted. And I think it's I'm trying to learn to be more celebratory.
>> We're not humble. We're just very >> I mean, we're humble to a point where it's like it's too much.
>> Like for example, like this is what this is the content I'm thinking about. Like
people are like, "Oh my god, congratulations on traders. you were
like the final three, blah blah blah blah blah. And I was like,
blah blah. And I was like, and [laughter] >> people were, >> yeah, like I don't think that's such a weird reaction though. Like I'm like, >> yeah, people like, you're my life must be so different and your life must have
changed. I was like, it's really not. I
changed. I was like, it's really not. I
just still have so much work to do. And
that's just kind of But I also understand where people are like, "Yeah, but you should like celebrate and you should do blah blah blah and you should do this and get yourself a gift." I was like, "No, man. I just got to pay rent."
>> Oh my days. Just hearing all that I was like, "That sounds tiring." No, I'm just like that's great. Yeah, I just got to go like put out an album and like shoot TE show and then go shoot another project. Like that is the way that I
project. Like that is the way that I think I've trained my brain.
>> That's like the same thing as like celebrating your birthday cuz I assume I got a feeling that you're not a birthday sort of person. Same here. So, I've got a feeling that it's like the same thing everyone's saying about it's your birthday, you should celebrate, you
should do something. I'm like
>> do I like >> When is your birthday?
>> May 21st.
>> Oh, okay. Soon.
>> Soon. But then it's always someone else's idea saying that we should go out, we should do something, we should do like we should get a nice meal. I'm
like, >> bro, like just live every day like your birthday, just chill.
>> That's I mean that's a great mentality to have.
>> Yeah. And it doesn't have to be that one day or that one week where you have to feel very happy that you're alive.
>> I think it's a very adult way of thinking about it. Some was talking about it the other day. It was I'm not going to wait to buy a gift for somebody or whatever or like or myself. It's like
if I really need to do it and I want to do it, I'm just going to do it because I'm an [clears throat] adult and I can do that and it doesn't have to wait for birthday, Valentine's Day, Christmas, whatever. Like, I'm going to give you a
whatever. Like, I'm going to give you a gift. Here it is. I was like, "Wow,
gift. Here it is. I was like, "Wow, we're so mature." [laughter]
>> This was your first role. You've been
doing it for years now. Can you walk us through that first day when you get on set? What was running through your head?
set? What was running through your head?
Also, did you make any mistakes?
>> Oh, you kidding me?
>> Like, I want to know your most embarrassing story on set.
>> Oh, no. No, no. This is not even a It's not even a I don't have to hide anything. [laughter] Like this is
anything. [laughter] Like this is because I usually don't hide it as well.
Yeah. Um cuz I I I've got a feeling by the way that you asking me this because you recently did a film and congratulations by the way.
>> Yeah. First day
>> it was okay. It was technically the second day because the first day I didn't have any lines.
>> But the second day I was like, "Oh my gosh." It didn't really hit me until I
gosh." It didn't really hit me until I keep forgetting my lines. No. I was
like, that's when I was like, I'm freaking out. I can't control this. What
freaking out. I can't control this. What
is going on? This is so real right now.
>> Yeah.
>> And then it occurred to me, right, Tan, you need to wake the [ __ ] up because you got like 500 people or 300 people behind the camera, staff members and all that, waiting,
>> especially the boom guy like doing this and he's like he's waiting for me to nail that line so we can move on.
>> Yeah. That's when I thought, "Oh god, okay, this is real." Like, "This isn't like an audition anymore. This is real.
Get your [ __ ] together." That's what I thought. That's what I told myself. And
thought. That's what I told myself. And
thankfully on the set, there was the most experienced actor, one of the most experienced actors, Anthony Kvine. He
who played Q. He was he was just telling me right all the tips like, you know, like breathe, do something to calm your mind, whatever. And also telling me like
mind, whatever. And also telling me like if you miss messed up a line just go back three seconds or like one or two lines before just redo again like don't don't freak out like don't cut yourself
the director will you know do whatever they can to make it good so >> just do all that and it really helped me but that whole month was like acting
boot camp like for me like I learned everything on set like marks like where to look left or right of the camera like doing people doing voiceovers on the background, I'm supposed to act on that.
I was like, "This is weird, but I learned all of that within the span of one month."
one month." >> Wow.
>> So, there's a reason why I also tell people if you do watch Exok season 3, just Yeah. See, three, um, don't watch
just Yeah. See, three, um, don't watch the first season fully. No, I'm joking.
Yeah. [laughter] No, cuz I know I I mean I'm I was I'm still pretty [ __ ] but I'm saying like >> like season 3 is so much better because at least it's not as bad as I I was in
season 1.
>> And also overall like the content itself and the story line, I think it's a lot better and grounded >> in season 3 because naturally the characters are getting older. We're
getting older, right? It just feels more grounded. So the story line felt more
grounded. So the story line felt more grounded. It's just overall great. But
grounded. It's just overall great. But
yeah, >> do you do you remember that line right now that you that you kept forgetting >> something about skin care and the >> those are like formative moments where you stand there and you're like I'm
holding up an entire crew of people who are all looking at me to move on and I cannot get this one line straight.
>> It's crazy.
>> Yeah. Something about like I know she is from I know she's your pen pal but this isn't your this isn't a hostel. And then
Q goes like hostiles from friendly people and I said I'm friendly to my friends and then continue and continue.
But that whole scene though, oh my gosh, like it was I hated it.
>> Do you [laughter] ever go back? Do you
ever go back and watch it?
>> No.
>> Did you watch your season?
>> But this No, like season one. Did you
watch it all?
>> Well, yes, because that was the first time ever seeing myself on screen and I realized why I would love to not see it again. [laughter] Cuz like even for like
again. [laughter] Cuz like even for like other shows or like things, I'm pretty sure some actors just have some similar uncomfortable feeling when they watch or hear.
>> I can't I can't watch. I think that's normal.
>> It's crazy. So I just screened Avatar the Last Airbender and that's just my voice right?
>> But even there I'm just like >> You hate that voice. [screaming]
>> Why do I sound like this?
>> Oh, it just sounds so weird as well. Uh,
it's like I [clears throat] mean it looks amazing and it's so cool and it's it's so good and everybody sounds perfect and then you hear your voice and you're like
>> but you just have to remind yourself everybody hears their own voice and they cringe.
>> So there's a reason why I wouldn't watch it again and again.
>> One is enough.
>> But you should all watch Avatar the Last Airbender [laughter] because it is an incredible film and you should all watch Exorcate Kitty season 1 to three.
>> Oh my god. Starting with season one, like a recap of season. No, I'm joking.
>> Since you've been doing this for the past four years, was there a moment over those past four years where you suddenly were like, "Oh, I get this. I know
myself as an actor or I feel myself growing or I feel confident."
>> Oh, I can definitely feel myself growing for sure. But I one thing I definitely
for sure. But I one thing I definitely realized about myself, not from the show or from my career is is from my my score
life or my daily life like everything I do. If there was a chart and there was
do. If there was a chart and there was like a ratio or there was like a a scoreboard like every year passes I'm gaining like 1% or one point than the
last year or the last season or last whatever. So like season one, let's just
whatever. So like season one, let's just say my performance is like two out of 10, I will gain at least one or two points from the next season, next season. So even if it's not the same
season. So even if it's not the same season, overall I think I'm learning something just by little by little and I know myself as I'm a slow improvement sort of person.
>> If you give me time, I it's like me out slowly but surely like I will make it there.
>> What do you love about your character?
You know, >> he's so confident. He doesn't give a like. [laughter] No like I love that.
like. [laughter] No like I love that.
>> Do you feel that in yourself at all >> nowadays? I sort of do. Like I try to
>> nowadays? I sort of do. Like I try to take that confidence from him cuz he was so confident as a high schooler which I wasn't. [laughter] I was such a loser.
wasn't. [laughter] I was such a loser.
Like I was like I was getting bullied.
Like [laughter] >> I'm pretty sure people were giving me so much [ __ ] and then I I was just saying like it's okay. But nowadays if some people give me [ __ ] I'll be like off.
>> Yeah.
>> What are you doing to me?
>> Totally. You're like, "Yeah, but like >> you will shoot an arrow through >> like >> this one is actor versus actor."
>> Oh god.
>> I am going to give you a scene prompt.
You have 20 seconds to make your scene and the best actor wins.
>> Oh, this is going horrific.
>> Who wants to go first?
>> Guess first.
>> What? [laughter]
I was looking at you just what do you think this >> guest first?
Break up with your girlfriend while dealing with secret headlights.
>> Headlight?
>> Yeah, you have headlights.
>> The bugs in your hair. Then again,
>> breaking up with your girlfriend.
>> I'll be your scene partner.
>> And action.
>> Oh, >> hey, Eric. Um, okay. So, the reason why I called you?
>> Yeah. [music]
>> I don't think we should see each other.
>> What do you mean? Why?
>> I don't know. Like,
>> are you sleepy?
>> No, my my head really hurts.
>> Your head hurts?
>> What's going on?
>> No, just thinking of breaking up. Were
you really just >> like for the day? No, it just really it just [music] I mean um >> you know I hate when you get danced up all over the couch.
>> It's just me really. I have a hard time being with you. I mean I just it's just annoying like >> and >> you're calling me annoying.
>> That was good. That was excellent.
>> Same prompt.
>> Okay, >> it's your turn. Take the scene. Settle
[clears throat] in.
>> And action. Eric.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. Are you okay?
>> I'm really stressed these days. I'm like
having a [music] lot of >> having a lot of issues.
>> Like Eric, you're scaring me.
>> Why?
>> You're You're Look at yourself.
>> What?
>> You're shaking.
>> Are you trying to break up with me?
>> No.
>> Are you breaking up with me?
>> What?
>> I'm so I didn't see >> I can't believe you're breaking up with me in my hardest time.
>> I didn't I didn't even [laughter] >> This is over.
>> I love an exit.
>> I like that. Oh,
>> you have to deliver bad news to your boss, but have to explain it that it was kind of their fault and not yours. And
action.
>> Hey, boss. Um,
>> yeah. I'm sorry.
>> I'm sorry. This might be really personal. Um,
personal. Um, >> then don't do it. Be quick.
>> Did you Did you eat something weird last night?
>> Last night?
>> Yeah.
>> Or like this morning?
>> Um, why don't why is that? So, I'm not I'm not saying we're just trying to figure it out. Please don't get mad. No,
it's um the toilet's broken and there was a lot of overflow.
And it's not We're not saying it's you, but we did notice matter in [music] the toilet that looked as if it was something perhaps you ate.
We're not saying it's you, but somebody has to pay [music] for the cleanup. I'm just saying that maybe you
cleanup. I'm just saying that maybe you broke the [music] toilet with a massive >> and we just respectfully are more concerned about your gut health. [music]
Are you taking probiotics?
>> Are you Did you tell anyone this?
>> It is on the company slack.
>> It is on my shoe.
>> Why? And you walked into my carpet with those shoes on. It's not. Well,
technically it's your poop, so [laughter] I'm returning it to you.
>> I like the bad news that you chose. That
was That was very bad news.
>> You're welcome.
>> Let's reverse the rules. Deliver bad
news to your boss. Action.
>> Hey, boss. How was your day so far?
>> It was great.
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> How's yours?
>> Yeah. By the way, um nice car you got there.
>> Thank you. Thank you.
>> That Mercedes green.
>> Yeah, I know. It's a little flashy.
>> It's like probably James Bond car, right?
>> You know, in my dreams, I was playing James Bond.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. She was just destroyed.
>> Wait, what?
>> Oh, yeah. Yo, that was there was like a there was like a crashed green Mercedes car that was like like little dented on the side. It wasn't there, but whilst I
the side. It wasn't there, but whilst I was parking like it just somehow got dented like but >> somehow got dented?
>> Yeah. Like I I got out of the car and there was a crack on the door. Was there
an accident there?
>> No. Did you crack it? No, I'm pretty sure it was already there before I even I'm thought that was just part of the style and I thought, "Oh, wow."
>> You think a crack door is part of my style? You think I'm broken?
style? You think I'm broken?
>> Well, to be honest, I thought it was, you know, I thought it was odd to be honest. Like,
honest. Like, >> I think it was odd and so you just But like, why are you saying it to me in this way?
>> Well, cuz I just have to inform you or at least like ask you if you bought it that way because if you did buy it that way, damn. I mean, boss, I feel like
way, damn. I mean, boss, I feel like Excuse me.
>> You're fired.
>> No, you got to think about this.
>> You're fired.
>> I think I think you're having a meltdown.
>> DANIEL, YOU'RE FIRED.
AND SCENE. Now you must tell your friend of five years that you've been faking your accent this whole time. [laughter]
>> Five years.
>> Are you ready? Settle into your character. You know your motivation. And
character. You know your motivation. And
action.
>> That meal was good, right? That chicken
we had. Yeah, it was really good.
>> Um that reminded me of back home in Jamaica. Yeah,
Jamaica. Yeah, >> back home in Jamaica.
>> Yeah. So my my man Bassi I mean sorry um okay so Eric I I didn't tell you this I live >> Wait you lived in Jamaica >> when did you live in Jamaica?
>> So that's all good thing man like um >> you're from Jamaica >> I mean I I always say to people but now here I have to say like like what are you saying like [music] how you doing?
>> So >> I have to be sophisticated like >> so you're what you're saying is you're appropriating American English. Um, no.
I have no idea what you I'm just more that person. I I just used to be more
that person. I I just used to be more chill man. Like I just uh uh but
chill man. Like I just uh uh but nowadays here like if I say it that way just [music] people judge me like so I had to you know make a >> must have been so hard for you. I'm
sorry.
>> I know. I know. I know. I know man. I
know man. I mean [laughter] >> insane >> and action. Hey. Um, [gasps] so this is going to sound absolutely insane.
>> Oh, you say >> I can't believe I nar >> listen I um this is going to be [music] crazy, but whatever. It doesn't matter.
Just like where I'm from. I'm I'm
actually Irish Australian and I've been practicing English, [music] American English, which is why sometimes I say really weird things.
>> Eric, are you right? You do you like you like drink something?
>> No.
>> No.
>> No.
>> No.
>> You are you sure? Like
>> No.
>> What are you trying to say? You've been
saying this weird American accent.
So, >> this Hollywood accent is Irish.
>> Listen to me. I think that I'm actually Irish.
>> You're Irish.
>> Australian.
>> And this [laughter] sound like in my normal accent.
>> No way.
>> This is what it is.
>> I thought I was Irish.
>> Are you Irish, too?
>> Are you Australian Irish?
>> I was I was just thinking like these days I've been I've been counting trees.
>> I think I've been counting trees, but everyone's been saying it's 33 trees, but it's actually 33 trees.
>> Trees. Yeah. I was like, "Oh my gosh, >> it's crazy.
>> You've been lying this whole time. I've
been lying this whole time. My mom,
>> are we crazy? This is awful. [laughter]
>> That was really bad.
>> Incredible."
>> It's the day that show.
>> So, a lot of fans probably were very pleasantly surprised to find out that your sister, Gia Kim, is also an Exokitty.
>> And so, what is it that your family fed you that the rest of the world did not get for for so much talent to be in one family? My mom and dad didn't trust us
family? My mom and dad didn't trust us pursuing our careers, >> right?
>> So that helped us, >> right?
>> Because we're like, >> uh-uh, we're not listening to you.
>> So the struggle, >> we're like, >> so disapproval [laughter] from your parents. So unsupportive parents is what
parents. So unsupportive parents is what made you survive and thrive, >> I think. So you know what? cuz like now obviously obviously our mom and dad um supports us but as much as they love us
they want us to have a stable job have an income and don't worry about like um auditions or like meetings all the time
>> which I get that but you know yeah it's our passions and this is what we feel like doing but now they obviously support us because they can see that we
are not from the successful or the failures that we've been through it's more like They saw everything. They saw
what why we want to do those things. And
that's why they're very supportive.
>> Yeah.
>> Did you and Gia ever grow up like acting things out together or like working together in any other capacity?
>> Let's just not piss each other off.
That's what we said. Like I think and also I'm the one who gets annoyed from her >> really easily.
>> And then I annoy her and she probably gets annoyed easily as well cuz of meh.
Not in general, but overall like we had try to have as much fun as possible on set if we have um the same scene together. Yeah. Just be supportive.
together. Yeah. Just be supportive.
>> Mhm.
>> That's all really.
>> That's great.
>> Who was more dramatic growing up? You or
Gia?
>> I think her.
>> Really?
>> Definitely her.
>> I'm going to tell her that.
>> Oh, yeah. You can she she'll be like, "No." But she smiled at the same time.
"No." But she smiled at the same time.
>> Why Why would he say that? But I can definitely say because I was, as I said, the loser, the quiet one in high school.
>> And there's Gia where she would always be pissing my mom off off because she's not listening to her or doing something wrong. And she she was always a clumsy
wrong. And she she was always a clumsy one. She can accept that for sure.
one. She can accept that for sure.
Nowadays, no. She's more z. She's more
grounded.
>> I think I became more >> excited when I'm with her.
>> It's more like annoyer. No, but it must be so fun to like even at events you guys are together or you guys can do press together and whatever. Like
>> wait I don't know fun, but it's more like [laughter] >> No, I'm being honest though. Like it's
not I don't know about fun, but it's more like it's good that I have someone >> in my family where I don't have to explain it from zero to 100 or A to Z
like everything that I'm going through because they know exactly what they're going through >> and they know exactly >> they cuz they were there speak without >> they were in the roof like so
>> do you watch all like the fan edits and the fan pages and all of that?
>> I do see the fan edits. It comes up on my reels or sometimes my friends would send it to me cuz they think it's hilarious or they think it's very sweet.
I think it's very touching. It's
>> Are you and your co-stars incredibly close? I imagine.
close? I imagine.
>> I would I would say so. Yeah.
>> Yeah. We would grab dinners now and then.
>> Um but obviously since we all live in different countries, >> is there a group chat?
>> Yes, there's like 12, 13, 14. I can't
remember how many people there are.
>> How active is it? Is it pretty regular or is it >> Nowadays people just say happy birthday if you if it's someone's birthday. I
think that's still pretty sweet. I do
that with my other >> group chats out there.
>> Okay.
>> But when we're on set together, we hang out >> constantly >> as much as possible.
>> Yeah.
>> On set, >> who do you get along with the most on on the crew?
>> Cuz you can't be best friends. Like I
was just on a show with 23 people. You
can't be friends with every like you can be friends but there are people that you're naturally gravitated towards just to like constantly.
>> I'm not sure. Maybe none. [laughter]
>> Like maybe I'm I think of them as a friend, but they don't really >> No, I don't. I But you and I have the same thing where I'm just like I think we're friends. Like [laughter] I was
we're friends. Like [laughter] I was talking to I like a co-star the other day, Rob, we were sitting there and I was like, "Hey, I think we're friends.
Are we friends?" He was like, "Yeah, I think so. I just Yeah, I think we're
think so. I just Yeah, I think we're friends.
>> It's [laughter] such an honest conversation though. Yeah,
conversation though. Yeah, >> but I think I think it's because our lives are so transient and they're so like fluid. It's hard to figure out when
like fluid. It's hard to figure out when it's like, "Hey, like Tan is a friend.
I'm going to hit you up >> just to hang out or grab a meal or just whatever." Like
whatever." Like >> Kristen, who you just met, I feel like I could do that now because we've hung out two or three times outside of the show, >> but this is a very new like >> I got you kind of. You better hit me up in Korea, though.
>> Of course.
>> Like, I'll take you some good spots. I
Your place was okay, but [laughter] >> just um I I did save it though.
>> Okay.
>> I didn't save it. It's a little too far.
>> It Look, I only went cuz that's where they put us up for the hotel.
>> I know, but >> it was Are you the type where you would just stay near the hotel?
>> No.
>> Exactly.
>> I left all the time.
>> Yeah, but you have to like go up like up.
>> Oh, to you?
>> Yeah. To the Han River and all that.
Like [sighs] >> see, >> she lives like out of the way. No,
>> I live in the heart of the city. Mine
I'm in I'm in Hanamando.
>> Not in the heart of the city.
>> Well, my apartment is in Hanamandong.
>> Oh, >> so that's where I that's where I have my apartment.
>> You have an apartment.
>> Listen, I just been there for about over >> Look at him.
>> 10 years. [laughter]
>> It's the D show.
