are you struggling to reach the top of google on this episode i'm going to explain the basics of seo and how you can get there what's up guys kyle milan here and whether you're listening to this on the podcast or watching on youtube please hit that subscribe button turn on notifications and leave a comment below with your thoughts on this episode we're talking about seo basics now i'm not going into the weeds on the

nerd talk because it will bore a lot of people we will do that in a separate video for those that want to watch but today we're going to talk about the basics behind how to get to the top of google so let's first talk about search volume now there's a lot of misconception out there and for my industrial clients this is massive but you think that what you do is highly searched for

every single month on google but the the fact of the matter is is that it is not now when i say highly searched after there's not two three five ten thousand searches a month for a lot of our industrial clients for what they do even as the main service that they offer or the other keywords that support that main service the volumes are typically in the 300 500 searches a month

so there's not a lot of people searching for it but there are a lot of people that are supplying a solution and trying to rank for that so it can be extremely difficult for us to get them ranked to the top so you kind of have to first understand what is the search volume behind what it is that you do now there's tons of tools out there the one that we use the most

is sem rush there's ahrefs there's moz there's using google through adwords planner pick whichever one you like the most with semrush we're able to do a search phrase and see what is the volume that people are searching for a month and then develop the plan around that but that's really where you have to start because without knowing what search phrases people are actually searching for you're going to be optimizing your website and your content

all those things around search phrases that are not as relevant where if you just change a couple words you can completely change the search phrase completely change the search volume so it starts with the keyword planning now what you have to remember is that seo is basically like a pyramid so the main search phrases that you want to rank for the main categories and themes are

way at the top of that pyramid and then as you work your way down the sides and underneath it you've got all these supporting keywords that are going to help and boost up that main keyword google changed their algorithm a couple years ago to where they're looking at themes and phrases so they understand that if you have this is the main keyword that is a theme and then there's all the

supporting phrases and other related keywords that support that that go along with it it's all in the same type of bundle gone are the days where you used to just use the same phrase on a web page or in an article you know 100 times 50 times to really do the keyword stuffing because that'll get you blacklisted and that's considered black hat seo so you want to focus

around what are the phrases what are people searching for you can do it like i said using something like semrush and you can start to type in different search phrases that you think of you can also look at your competitors with some of these seo tools to see what are they ranking for how are they getting their organic traffic but you wanna first plan out if you do a main service

there's things that go with that service there's all these supporting keywords and you wanna make out a list on excel but first use that list and verify things in an seo tool to make sure your keyword phrases do have a decent amount of volume behind it like i said industrial clients especially the services side you're looking at around four or five 800 searches a month

in the us on google you're not going to be getting things that are 10 12 000 like you would on maybe the consumer side once you understand the search volume and you've built this list now you want to look at the main two categories of seo off page and on-page some people call it off-site on-site on-page seo is all the stuff that's built into your website so that deals with your h1 h2 h3

tags which are basically you've got a phrase on your web page and you're telling google by assigning it an h1 tag this is getting into the weeds a little bit with the nerd talk you're signing an h1 tag you're telling google this is the phrase that i want to go after on this page then you've got h2 and three and four tags which are maybe subtopics or subtopic

keywords that are related to that main h1 tag but it's not exactly the same and you're basically giving google the blueprint to say when you come and crawl my website this is the way that i want to index these are the things i'm trying to go after and you're taking the guesswork out of it also with the on-page seo has to do with your meta titles and meta descriptions if you search

anything go to anybody's website and if you hover over the tab in the top of your browser just for a couple seconds all sudden a small dialogue box will pop up and it'll show you the words for that page now in the industrial market there's a lot of companies that have this set up wrong where on their home page it'll say the word home at the top of the tab and then it'll say dash the

company name maybe a vertical bar phone number or city and state that page was not optimized for seo you want to focus on with the meta title you've got roughly 60 characters you want to focus around what is the main keyword that you're trying to go after on that page so if it is plastics or

metals or services or robotics you want that main page your homepage should be robotics integrator for aerospace industry or something like that so you can do a little quick research on your own website your competitor's website that's one quick way to see what are they trying to go after on this if they've optimized it for seo when you hover over that tab you will see it now when

you do a google search and you see the main meta title which is the has the blue link underneath it underneath that is the meta description my description is changing the the character count is changing frequently on year to year but roughly 160 characters are allowed there and the whole key behind that is to not have it just default to whatever the first 160 characters are the

are on that web page you want to type in something custom there you want to tell google this is what i want to show up and you can optimize that description by using the keyword phrase that you have in the meta title also in the description maybe you use it two times and that's how you're going to be able to tell google this is what i'm trying to rank for look at my meta title look at

my meta description look at my h1 tag this is what i want take the guesswork out of the bot that's crawling it from google before it indexes you and say this is what i'm looking to go after now in any search phrases you can see meta title meta description and i implore people to look at your current website to see what do you currently look like from a google search standpoint

your meta title and description and the h tags are the most important those are the foundational aspects of on-page fco there's also some additional aspects like your alt tag all tags have to do with the images when you have an image on your website if for whatever reason google can't display that image they want to know what is the alt tag or alternative text

that should show up in place of that image or if something blocks an image from loading some words will show up you want those words on the alt tag for every single image on that page and on your website to be applicable to that image and also applicable to your keywords so you want

to really think about all aspects of it whether it's using a simple keyword like manufactured part using machining or cnc machine part or injection molded part or robotic integrated system or something like that you want each individual image on your website to be having an alt tag to it to again take the guesswork out of it you're telling google this is what i want this image to rank for

and it makes things so much easier and quicker when it comes to rankings the off-page seo off-site seo that's when it comes to links back to your website so the so once you optimize your site for on-page seo then you can start to look at i want other high authority domain companies that get a lot of traffic to send traffic back to me for the industrial market that's going

to be publications or other associations or things that are bigger than you are or maybe not from a size standpoint to just get more traffic and write content for them talk about you know exhibiting at trade shows things like that all those links build up your backlinking profile and that helps overall seo off page seo is great as a consistent thing to keep

bringing new traffic to your site showing google that you are an authoritative figure you are a subject matter expert look at these other companies that are referring back to me they get a lot of traffic they have a lot of authority therefore google's going to trust that if they're pointing traffic to you then you should probably increase your rankings as well and

that's a great tactic to have but if the ship is broken and your on-page seo isn't set up properly it's not going to make a world of difference if you have a thousand backlinks from high authority places versus zero now comes down to the fourth step which is going to be creating content google is going to index and rank your page and they're going to do it based on what you

currently have there and if you never update your website and you don't have any more backlinks and you don't make any changes you don't create any new pages google is going to say this is what we have to work with however if you are creating content on a regular basis that is telling google that i am a subject matter expert i'm going to continue to create content

you should trust me and you should send more traffic to me because look at this experience that people are going to have and that's when it comes into creating content is part of the backbone of the main pillars to support your seo i'll link a video above here where i talk about the content marketing strategy and exactly how to figure out topics and do all

that research i've talked about this a ton across all my channels content marketing is the backbone of everything in my opinion but in this episode specifically we want to look at articles and videos so creating articles writing articles and having those articles optimized for a keyword phrase you can go after long tail keywords a long tail keyword is something that's more than a few

words in it so you're looking at five to seven word phrases so when you search something it's not cnc machine supplier or it's not plastic injection molding near me you're looking at that supporting keywords think about the bottom of the pyramid again now we're getting lower down on the pyramid to support those main themes and phrases and you want to have topics that are supporting that

that's in the same theme but it's supporting it and you can rank a lot quicker for that because there's not as many people that are searching or competing with you on those search phrases so doing at least one article i would prefer to tell you to do two articles a month i know that it's difficult to create content like that you can hire an agency like ours to do it for you

because we have degree engineers on staff that write technical content we write probably about 50 articles a month for our clients so we do this all the time and in turn it gets them ranking very high on google very quickly for all the support phrases not only is the content marketing side of it and creating articles good for just general marketing

and sales to be able to distribute it out there and show people that you're a subject matter expert it really really helps google and right now content is king and you need to focus on creating as much as possible make sure you check out the other episodes where i talk about how to pick the topics and things like that but the pillar is going to be writing articles on the

flip side of that videos also play a role we talk a lot about videos across all of my platforms and because google owns youtube a lot of times videos can index higher than articles when you search for something if a video has a lot of traction and a lot of engagement and a lot of views it'll show up right below the ads it'll show up above the organic natural written text and that's

just because google knows that a lot of people want to watch videos more than read the content so by creating videos you're indexing on youtube you need to optimize it for seo on youtube which you can use a tool called vid iq that's the tool that we use and optimize every single video you can put tags to it and titles and it tells you how you're doing based on search rankings and that's the best

way and the best tool to use to be able to see is what you're doing to your videos actually working and how should i name these videos and what tags should i use and so with that tool you're going to rank higher on goog on youtube and then because you're ranking higher on youtube you might rank on google and that's going to support your articles which is then going to support your main pages

and all your service pages and your main home page and everything just boosts up so again think of it like a pyramid the main keywords and phrases at the top of that pyramid and you've got all the supporting keywords and phrases and content below it and that is really the best way to start to break into it what you have to keep in mind especially from the my industrial clients

and people in those industrial markets and services is that there's not a lot of your competition that is actively that's the keyword phrase they're actively focused on increasing their search rankings they may be already there at the top but they're not protecting it they did something years ago or for whatever reason they just got lucky and when they publish a new website

they jump to the top of google however a lot of times those people are not defending it to where agencies like ours can slide in with an aggressive content strategy with optimization from seo on on our clients websites and take over those positions very quickly and then we became the authoritative figure it's a lot more difficult for those people to climb back up unless they're creating a ton of

content so content is that backbone don't just focus on i just want to optimize my website for seo and on-page seo and i'm good and then i'm done no that's when it starts you need to focus on creating content to keep boosting you up so hopefully you got some value out of this episode if you have questions comments leave them in the comments below don't forget to
