Thinking of Learning Violin as an Adult? Watch This First!
By The Online Piano & Violin Tutor
Summary
## Key takeaways - **Progress feels slow, but it's normal.**: Violin progress is slow for everyone, including children. Adults often quit because they believe they aren't improving fast enough. Instead, focus on small wins like better bow control or cleaner string crossings, aiming for even a 1% improvement weekly. [00:30], [00:50] - **Clumsy hands are expected; build coordination.**: Holding a violin and bow will feel unnatural at first as your brain and muscles build new connections. Don't panic about stiffness or uncoordination; it becomes more natural with practice. Start with simple exercises for bow control and finger strengthening before tackling full pieces. [01:16], [01:42] - **Sounding bad initially is part of the process.**: It's normal for a violin to not sound pleasant at first. Even the best violinists sounded bad when they started. Focus on clean, slow playing with careful finger placement and controlled bow strokes, as this will always sound better than fast, messy playing. [02:17], [02:43] - **Motivation fluctuates; build discipline.**: You will hit plateaus where progress feels stagnant, and motivation will come and go. To combat this, find inspiration by listening to music you love or learning a desired piece. Crucially, build discipline by practicing even for short periods when you don't feel like it, as small habits lead to long-term progress. [03:12], [03:56] - **Consistency is key for adult violinists.**: The biggest difference between adult violin learners who succeed and those who quit is consistency. Keep going, take it one step at a time, and improvement is guaranteed. [04:18], [04:21]

hello everyone and welcome back to my
channel so the truth about learning the
violin as an adult what no one is
telling you learning the violin as an
adult is completely different from
learning as a child there are challenges
that nobody warns you out about but also
huge advantages that maybe you haven't
even considered so in this video I'm
going to tell you about the honest truth
about what it takes to learn the violin
as an adult and how to make sure that
you succeed so truth one progress is
going to feel slow and that's absolutely
normal one of the biggest reasons I
think adults quit is because they think
that they're just not improving fast
enough but here's the thing violin
progress is slow for everyone even kids
I can guarantee Solution One change how
you measure your success instead of
thinking I should sound good by now
focus on the small wins like better bow
control uh cleaner string Crossings or
improved intonation Etc so if you're
improving even 1% each week you're on
the right track solution two why not
keep a video log I've said this before
in previous videos so you don't notice
provement from day today but if you
record yourself once a month you're
going to see exactly how much you're
improving and progressing truth two your
hands are going to feel a bit clumsy at
first if you've never played an
instrument before as holding a violin or
bow is going to feel completely
unnatural at first and that's normal
because your brain and your muscles are
building brand new connections so
solution one to help you expect
awkwardness Don't Panic if your hands
feel stiff or uncoordinated or you can't
just you just can't get it right the
more you play the more natural it's
going to become solution two start with
simple exercises before tackling full
pieces focus on bow control drills slow
scales finger strengthening exercises
all those kinds of things because
they're going to help build the
coordination gradually and solution
three be patient with your Bow hand
which is your right hand most adult Lear
leers Focus too much on the left hand
but bow control is what actually makes
you sound good spend time on Boe
exercises early on it's going to make
everything much easier later on down the
line and I cannot tell you how true that
is truth three and here's the big one
you're going to sound bad for a while
and that's okay this one's a hard one to
accept but it's true is your violin's
just not going to sound Pleasant at all
at first and that's absolutely normal so
Solution One understand that even the
best violinists in the world once
sounded bad no one just picks up a
violin and sounds amazing on day one
unless your name is mozar obviously it
takes time to develop a good tone
solution two focus on clean playing
before fast playing so rushing through
your pieces is going to make you feel
frustrated so instead work on slow
controlled bow strokes and placing those
left hand fingers carefully clean slow
clean playing is always going to sound
better than fast messy playing solution
three play open strings daily simple
exercises like long bow Strokes on open
strings they're going to help you
develop a solid tone before even
worrying about notes truth four
motivation is going to come and go so at
some point you're going to hit a plateau
where progress just feels stagnant and
you might even consider quitting and
that's completely normal we've all been
there Solution One find inspiration
listen to violin music that you love
watch performances on YouTube you know
learn a piece that you've always wanted
to play a matter the difficulty staying
inspired is going to keep you going even
if you have something really really
difficult on the side you know it will
motivate you to want to get that violin
out the next day and the day after and
so on solution two set yourself some
mini goals so instead of saying I want
to get better set smaller clearer goals
like I want to play this phrase cleanly
by next week or uh I want to shift into
third position smoothly solution three
don't rely on motivation build
discipline sometimes you're not going to
feel like practicing and that's fine
pick up the violin anyway even if it's
just for 5 minutes as those small habits
are going to build long-term progress
and finally learning the violin as an
adult comes with it does come with
unique challenges but the biggest
difference between those who succeed and
those who quit is simple it's
consistency keeping going keep going
take it one step at a time and you will
improve I guarantee you so let me ask
you this question what's been the
biggest surprise for you in learning the
viol as an adult let me know in the
comments underneath this video and
