Well, hello everybody and welcome to our webinar today on creating ing and sharing Gemini gems. So excited to be learning with you guys here today.
Thanks so much for either joining live as many of you are or watching the recording in the future. Either way, I appreciate you taking the time out to be a part of this learning experience. For
those that are here live, uh please continue to do what folks are doing, saying hi in the chat. It's wonderful to see so many people from all around the world. So, uh please yes, feel free to
world. So, uh please yes, feel free to introduce yourself and say where you're from. I'm seeing, you know, Utah,
from. I'm seeing, you know, Utah, Wisconsin uh Malaysia California Texas, Arkansas, Illinois, Iowa, on and on and on and on. Oh my gosh, so many
people. Barcelona, Spain. Thank you so
people. Barcelona, Spain. Thank you so much. So, it's fantastic to see
much. So, it's fantastic to see everybody who is here today. Thanks so
much for being a part of this. Uh,
before we dive on into the session, a little bit of housekeeping uh to get us started here. First thing first, I want
started here. First thing first, I want to make sure everybody can access all the resources that we're going to be going through today. So, you'll see on the screen here uh a bit.ly link. And
that bit.ly link is going to get you to a resource document that has everything we're exploring. That is bit.ly/kurtz-
we're exploring. That is bit.ly/kurtz-
gyms. Just for your convenience, I will also drop that link into the chat. I put
it in earlier, but you may have missed it with all the comments coming in there. So, I will go ahead and add that
there. So, I will go ahead and add that into the chat again so you can click on it easily there. Um, and I'll put a bigger version up so you can see it a little bit better as well. bit
bit.ly/kurtz-jims.
That's going to take you to a Google document that looks like this. So, if
you're winding up in that Google document, you are in the right place.
Couple of quick things about that document. First of all, you're
document. First of all, you're absolutely free to make a copy if you'd like. If you want your own copy of that,
like. If you want your own copy of that, then you can take notes in it or do whatever you want with it completely fine. Uh but you can also save it to
fine. Uh but you can also save it to your drive or bookmark it. The key is this document is never going away. It'll
always be there. You can get back to this document anytime that you need. And
I do update these documents frequently.
So, uh even if you do make a copy, make sure you periodically go back to the original so you can see any updates that are in there.
um give you a quick little overview of what you're going to see in that document. When you do get in there, at
document. When you do get in there, at the very top of that document, you are going to see all of my contact information. I'll mention a little bit
information. I'll mention a little bit more about that in a moment. Um and then on page two of the document, that's where you'll find the slideshow. You
don't need to open it, just letting you know that it's there. And then after that, everything else is all of the content we are going to be exploring throughout the session. Lots of great
links and resources in there to support you as we work through uh that session.
So once again, bit.ly/kurtz-geems.
Note, it is Curts, not Curtis. Very
common misspelling. There's no I in there. I don't know where that bit.ly
there. I don't know where that bit.ly
link would would uh would end up taking you. So make sure you spell it as Curts.
you. So make sure you spell it as Curts.
Uh with that said, uh let me do this now. Um let me introduce myself again.
now. Um let me introduce myself again.
So many wonderful people saying hi from all around. I really appreciate that.
all around. I really appreciate that.
Uh, let me do a quick introduction of myself, though. So, hi everybody. Uh, my
myself, though. So, hi everybody. Uh, my
name is Eric. Uh, I am an educator here in Northeast Ohio. This is my 34th year in education. I started off as a middle
in education. I started off as a middle school math teacher, then moved into a role as a tech coach, and that's what I do now. Uh, I do work part-time at the
do now. Uh, I do work part-time at the Stark County Educational Service Center in North Canton, Ohio. I technically
retired last summer, uh, but came back part-time this year. So happy to still be helping to support our local scores schools. And then on the side um for
schools. And then on the side um for many many many years I've also been doing training and workshops and consulting and keynotes all over the country actually all around the world.
And so um today is a little piece of that as well. I do run a website called controlalttachieve.com where I share out everything all of the
resources that I create, anything I do.
You can access all of that there. Uh
that link is also at the very top of our agenda document. You'll see right there
agenda document. You'll see right there control alalttach achieve.com. I will
pop that open for just a moment to show you what the site looks like. This is
what controlal altachieve looks like here. And tell you what, I'll drop the
here. And tell you what, I'll drop the link into the chat if that's a little easier for people that want to pull it up and maybe just bookmark it so you can get back to it later in the future. But
again, it is right at the top of the document here. Heads up, that's where I
document here. Heads up, that's where I share everything. All of my stuff is
share everything. All of my stuff is there and it's all completely free.
There's no payw walls or anything. you
can get you can access everything that's on the site. Uh there's a tab specifically for AI where you can find all of my AI resource documents and training videos and blog posts as well
as a tab for my webinars and a tab for my edte links. So many things here. What
I usually recommend though, I understand it. Life's busy. I totally get it.
it. Life's busy. I totally get it.
You're like, Eric, well that looks valuable, but I'm probably not going to remember to keep checking the site. My
recommendation is go to the site and click on the newsletter tab and just drop your email in there. I do send out a newsletter typically once a week, sometimes every other week, never more
often than that. So, I'm not going to bug you with emails, maybe two or three a month. Um, and basically they just
a month. Um, and basically they just say, "Hey, here's all the new things on the website since the last newsletter, and here's some cool things I came across." So, it's an easy way to have
across." So, it's an easy way to have the website come to you instead of you having to go to the website. So, I'd
encourage you to sign up for that if you want to stay in the loop on things.
Having said that though, like I mentioned at the top of the document, there's lots of ways to stay in touch.
So, you pick what works for you, whether it's the blog, the newsletter, my socials, my YouTube channel. There's a
lot of options there. And by the way, if your school is looking for professional development, here's a link to my PD catalog, uh, where you can check out all of the sessions that I do. I would be thrilled to chat with you about options
for working with your school or organization or conference and providing uh additional PD. All right. So anyway,
that's a quick intro on all the technology things uh that I do. Please
take advantage of those resources. And
again, for those people who have just joined us, once again, there is the link. And hey, Erin, thank you so much.
link. And hey, Erin, thank you so much.
I appreciate uh saying that the newsletter is an excellent resource. I
really appreciate that. Thank you so very much. That's excellent. All right.
very much. That's excellent. All right.
Seeing a lot of folks saying hi again in the chat. Oh, I see Barb is here. Hey,
the chat. Oh, I see Barb is here. Hey,
Barb. So nice to see you. Thank you so much for being with us here today. Barb
works with me at the Start County ESC.
That's fantastic. All right. Well, with
all of that said, the last little thing that I want to mention real quick before we actually get in and start working on all the stuff we're going to be exploring here is when you guys
registered for this um for this for this webinar, I did have in the sign up form a box where you could put in questions that you wanted me to address. So,
here's the deal. We're going to try to keep this webinar around an hour and so it's very possible that I'm not going to be able to cover every single question.
So here's what I did. I answered a bunch of them ahead of time. So what I want to show you is when you get into the main resource document, if you scroll right below my presenter info, you will see a
link to a sharing document. Now I do this with every session I do. I always
have a sharing document. Um, if you pop that link open to that sharing document, what you're going to see is first of all, a page where you can add questions throughout the session, which is great.
Please feel free to do that. I mean,
technically, you can drop questions into the YouTube chat, but I might miss them because the chat goes pretty quickly.
It's a little easier sometimes for me to see questions when they pop up here in this document. But here's what I want to
this document. But here's what I want to point out to you. Look on the left hand side of the document where the tabs are at and notice there's a tab called preession
questions. If you click on that tab on
questions. If you click on that tab on the left, these are the 24 questions that I was able to answer ahead of time.
So, it's really possible you may have submitted a question that I'm not going to be able to get to during the session.
Well, I tried to I tried to get ahead of that and so I have pre-answered 24 of the questions that came in. And again,
that's the left-hand side over here where it says preession cues, preession questions, you can scroll on down and hopefully if you had a question,
hopefully I already answered it for you with plenty of links and explanations.
And during the session, if you have a question, maybe not a bad idea. Take a
peek into the preession questions tab. I
may have already answered it. And so
that may help you already get your question answered. But here's the thing,
question answered. But here's the thing, guys. If you do not see an answer there,
guys. If you do not see an answer there, that's what the live session tab is for.
Drop any question you have in throughout the session. I will do my best to try to
the session. I will do my best to try to address those questions. And you know what? If I don't get to them in the
what? If I don't get to them in the session, I will do it after the session is over. I will go back through and I
is over. I will go back through and I will um answer those questions as well.
But I'll do my best if if I can.
Speaking of which, while you're on that page, do note if you end up creating an awesome gym today that you would like to share with folks, rather than throwing them all on this page, which might
become a little cumbersome, I did give a Google form link here where you can click to share a gem you create. So, if
you end up making something during the session, or you know what, even afterwards, if you create something, you know, later on or hey, if you created something ahead of time, that's great, too. Any gym that you create at any
too. Any gym that you create at any point, feel free to drop it into this form. Put in the name of the gym, what
form. Put in the name of the gym, what it does, and a link to it. Now, make
sure you've shared it publicly. We will
be explaining how to do that. That's
what the whole session is going to be about. We're going to create gyms and
about. We're going to create gyms and share gyms and all that. Optionally, you
can put in your name and email. You
certainly do not have to, but you certainly can if you want to. And then
this is the Google sheet that all feeds into. So you'll be able to go like I put
into. So you'll be able to go like I put in a I just put in a sample to show you what it would look like. So as people do submit those, you can peek into that uh spreadsheet and see what people have
been sharing. Anyway, that's the idea.
been sharing. Anyway, that's the idea.
I'm just trying to make it as easy as possible for everybody to participate throughout the session uh now and in the future. So even if you're watching the
future. So even if you're watching the recording, hey, still take advantage of the gems people have made, add your own, and we can all keep learning together even after this session is over. All
right. All right, I think that is going to have to be it for all of the introductions and housekeeping. We got
to get into the content. So, I'm going to disappear off the side of the screen here so you guys can see this a little bit better. I may pop up again at the
bit better. I may pop up again at the end there. But, let's get into the
end there. But, let's get into the actual content here one last time. If
you still need it, that is the resource document that we are pulling from this entire time. Uh, if you do need to
entire time. Uh, if you do need to follow along, please do so. All right.
Oh, and by the way, just as a blanket statement, everything that I create, everything I share, I release under a creative common license, which means you do not need to ask my permission. You
are completely allowed to copy, distribute, adapt anything that I create. I do not mind. That's what it's
create. I do not mind. That's what it's there for. All I ask is leave a link
there for. All I ask is leave a link back to where you got it from and have at it. So, if you want to make a copy of
at it. So, if you want to make a copy of my slideshow here on page two, if you want to copy any of the gyms or the resources, everything in here, yes, it is completely free for you to use, however you want to support your staff,
your students, or whoever you are supporting. All right, so what are we
supporting. All right, so what are we going to do here in this session? Well,
what we're going to do is we're talking about creating and sharing gyms. So, we're going to begin with a very brief Gemini overview because gyms are in Gemini. Then a very brief gyms overview.
Gemini. Then a very brief gyms overview.
We're going to take a look at some sample gyms. so we understand what they are and then we're going to make some.
We're going to talk about how do you create a gym and then we're going to do a little bit of a deeper dive into making a really good prompt for the gym because that's going to be critical to it and then finally how do you share
what you've created. That's it. That is
the plan. Let's get in and let's try it out. So first thing first Gemini
out. So first thing first Gemini overview. It is important that we
overview. It is important that we understand we are going to be using uh Google Gemini for gyms. Now, what if you say, Eric, hey, you know, I use chat GPT or I use Claude or I use whatever.
That's fantastic. Those are wonderful tools. I think they're all great. We are
tools. I think they're all great. We are
going to be using Gemini here today, though. So, any of the gyms that we
though. So, any of the gyms that we create are going to be things that are going to be functioning inside of Gemini, but technically, yeah, you could take the same ideas and apply them to those other systems. You know, chat GPT
has custom GPTs, you know, so you could make them similar to gym. So these ideas do transfer over to other systems, but we're going to be looking at Gemini today. One of the big reasons is it is
today. One of the big reasons is it is incredibly schoolfriendly. Gemini is
incredibly schoolfriendly. Gemini is available for all ages. So that means we can create gyms for our staff, but also for our students. Students can use
Gemini as well. It's also free with robust use. Everything I'm showing you
robust use. Everything I'm showing you today is free. Nothing I am showing has anything to do with the paid versions of Gemini. This is all completely free. And
Gemini. This is all completely free. And
also what's really important here is Gemini, if you are using a school account, has built-in free data privacy protection for schools. What that means
is nothing you type into Gemini can be shared with advertisers. Nothing you put in can be used to train future models.
Nothing that you put in can be shared with anybody outside of your school.
Even Google cannot read the things you put in there. It is uh Kappa, Furpa, HIPPA compliant, all of that. And you
can tell when you go to Gemini on an education account, if you're using an edu, an education account, a school account, you'll even see in the prompt box, you'll see a little shield right
there that tells you you have built-in data privacy protection. That is why I am so often recommending Gemini as a tool that just has to be in your AI
toolbox because schools can use this with students, all ages for free with data privacy protection, which means, yeah, you can upload, you know, student content. You can put student essays in
content. You can put student essays in there for grading or you can have it help you with IEPs, you can do all of those things because it has that built-in data privacy protection. That
is critical. That makes such a big difference for schools. So that is why we are taking a look at that today. All
right. If you want to learn more about Gemini, obviously this session you're going to pick up bits and pieces. I do
have loads of Gemini resources in the agenda. If you scroll on down to page
agenda. If you scroll on down to page two under the Gemini overview here, you'll see a spot that says learn more.
This is my Gemini document. You can pop out to that at any point.
bit.ly/kurds-gemini.
that'll take you to a completely separate document where I have a very very very very deep dive into Gemini and all the amazing things it does. So if
you want to learn more about Gemini uh than we are covering here in this session uh you absolutely can do that and tell you what I'll drop that link into the chat as well if anybody wants to pin that or come back to that at some
point also in the future. Well with that said let's talk about gyms. So what are gyms? So basically here's the idea.
gyms? So basically here's the idea.
Let's say I'm using Gemini and I've got some amazing prompt that I just absolutely love. I use this prompt all
absolutely love. I use this prompt all the time. It helps me do some task that,
the time. It helps me do some task that, you know, just saves me loads and loads of time. But I'm like, you know what? I
of time. But I'm like, you know what? I
would love to not have to keep retyping this prompt every time I need it or copying and pasting it. I got to find it. I got to copy it. I got to paste it
it. I got to copy it. I got to paste it every time I want to use this highly useful prompt. Wouldn't it be nice?
useful prompt. Wouldn't it be nice?
Wouldn't it be great if we could save our commonly used prompts? Well, that's
what gyms are. Gyms are in essence saved prompts. Um, I would technically call
prompts. Um, I would technically call them custom AI chatbots uh because they're a little more than just a prompt, but that's basically what they are. Basically, a gym allows us to
are. Basically, a gym allows us to create a little custom version of Gemini that is preloaded with our prompt. We
get to put a prompt into it. We get to uh control some settings and we can upload files into it. we can attach reference files to it that it can draw
from. Um, and then anytime we want, we
from. Um, and then anytime we want, we can use that. We can just click on the gym and run it and use it anytime we want. There are some pre-made ones that
want. There are some pre-made ones that Google's provided, but we're focusing mostly on creating gyms here tonight.
Now, if that's it, if that's all gyms did, I don't know that I would probably be doing this webinar tonight. It's
like, well, that's cool. That's useful.
Here is the real reason we're doing this is because in addition to all of that that you can do with gyms. This is the key. You can share them. That's really
key. You can share them. That's really
the reason we're doing the webinar because creating them is great. Oh, it
saves you time. You can easily get to a gym that you want to use again and again. No, no, no. This is what I get
again. No, no, no. This is what I get excited about. It's about sharing the
excited about. It's about sharing the gyms because what that means is as a school district you can create the best possible high quality gyms that have
files attached for your school for like your course of study, your standards, you know, your procedures. You can put in the prompts that work specifically
for your math teacher, science teachers, maybe you're, you know, ESL students, whatever the case might be. You can
build your own curated collection of world-class gyms and then share them with your staff and students. You can
basically make your own AI treasure chest, which is the technically the full name of this session, your AI treasure chest. Uh creating and sharing Gemini
chest. Uh creating and sharing Gemini gems. And that's really why we're here.
That's what it's all about. My hope is that what you do with this session going forward is that I hope you start building your own AI treasure chest within your district of vetted
highquality gyms to support your staff and your students. All right, so let's get into it. How do we find these things? All right, so here we go. So
things? All right, so here we go. So
first of all, to get to gyms, we do have to be in Gemini. And so from Gemini, we're going to pop open a lefthand side menu. And we'll notice in there there is
menu. And we'll notice in there there is a gyms link that will take us to our gym manager. So here I am in Gemini. If I
manager. So here I am in Gemini. If I
come over to my lefthand panel, give a click there. Here you can see there's my
click there. Here you can see there's my gyms link at the top. I click on that and there's my gym manager. And there we go. So that's what gets me to the gym
go. So that's what gets me to the gym screen inside of Gemini. Now once you've done that, what are you going to find?
You're going to find three main sections. First of all, there's a
sections. First of all, there's a section called pre-made by Google. These
are a collection of sample gyms that Google has already provided. Then
there's a my gyms section. This is any gyms you have created or gyms you've copied from other people. I'll show you how to do that shortly. So whether you create it from scratch or whether you
copy it from somebody else, once it's your gym, that's where it shows up.
Plus, that's where the new gym button is where you can make your own new gyms. Then there's a section at the bottom called shared with me. And that's where you can see any gyms that other people
have created that you have used. Once
you use somebody else's gym, it automatically shows up in the shared with me section. So, let me just show what that looks like. So, again, at the top, here's the ones pre-made by Google.
There's a bunch of great ones here.
These these these swap in and out.
They're not always the same. Uh they
test out different ones here. And we're
not really going to dive into this here today. Just be aware there's some nice
today. Just be aware there's some nice ones here. There's a brainstormer gym, a
ones here. There's a brainstormer gym, a writing editor gym, a learning coach gym. The storybook gym is actually
gym. The storybook gym is actually really cute. It allows you to create a
really cute. It allows you to create a custom picture book for for kids. It'll
even read it aloud. It's awesome. It's a
it's a great great gym. But that's what you're going to see at the top or just just a little handful of some to get you started from Google. Then here is the my gym section, which I understand you this may be blank for you. You might not have
made any gyms yet. Uh but once you do, they'll start showing up here. Now, I've
made a lot of gyms. So, it's going to take a while to scroll through all of these, but let's keep scrolling. Yeah,
I've kind of gotten excited about gems. And I've made an awful lot of them, but once we get past all the gems that I've made, we'll get to the bottom section.
We're still working. Oh my gosh, there it is. And there's shared with me. And
it is. And there's shared with me. And
so, shared with me. Again, these are gyms from other people. When you click on them and use them from other people, they'll show up here. So, that's it.
That is what the screen looks like for when you get to your gym manager screen um to access the pre-made gyms, your gyms and gyms that other people have
shared with you. All right, so with that said, let's go ahead and let's test some out. Let's get let's try some gyms out
out. Let's get let's try some gyms out just to see. Okay, so what what could a gym do? Now, we certainly could. I mean,
gym do? Now, we certainly could. I mean,
you abs and feel free to you absolutely could try out the ones at the top here if you want to try out some of the ones pre-made by by Google. Absolutely feel
free to do that. That's that's perfectly fine. But here's what I'm going to do.
fine. But here's what I'm going to do.
I'm going to have you guys, if you want, pop over to another website where I have been collecting my favorite gems. So, you remember that gigantic list of gems
that I just scrolled through here? All
of these gyms here. Yeah. All of these gems that I have created, I have shared so that anybody who wants to use them can use them. So, all of these are freely available for anybody to use and
I've put them on a website called edyouuguge.ai.
edyouuguge.ai.
Let me copy that link for you. Here's
what it looks like. I'll copy the link and I'll drop that into the chat. If
it's easier for you guys to click on in the chat, feel free to do so. Um, but
it's just like edu edu edu eduge.ai.
That is the link. So, that link is going to take you to my Edguge Gyms website where you're going to find so so so many gyms. I think as of today, I think I've
got 109 gems there at the moment. And
I'm going to encourage you to find a gym here that you would like to try out and take it for a spin. Now, I will demonstrate one as well. I will do one gym. We don't have time to do many. I'll
gym. We don't have time to do many. I'll
just do one gym to show you but I'll also give you a quick overview of how the site works. So basically these are all gyms I have created and I have shared which you will learn how to share
gyms in just a little bit. Basically any
gym that is here like you know the 5e lesson plan you can just click on that gym and what it will do is it will open up a page where you get a description of the gym. It give you a little typically
the gym. It give you a little typically a little info. I don't have infographics for all of them yet. Little by little I'm adding those in. But you you you'll get a description and then you'll get a link to use the gym. Now note, there
also is a link to copy the gym. I will
explain that later, but for right now, here's the link to use the gym. So, oh,
I want to make a 5e lesson plan. Sure,
absolutely. Click on the link for use the gym that then opens the gym into a new tab. Now, one thing you got to know,
new tab. Now, one thing you got to know, gyms do not auto.
They open, they load the prompt, but they don't run. You actually have to start the conversation. You have to say something to them. I have found the
fastest possible thing is just to say hi. Just type in hi hi and that will run
hi. Just type in hi hi and that will run the gym. So typically that's what I do
the gym. So typically that's what I do to kick it off. And at that point like hey I'm your 5e lesson plan generator.
I'm here to help you make this lesson plan. Here's what I need to get started.
plan. Here's what I need to get started.
You know um and then you can just have a conversation. Now I will say one other
conversation. Now I will say one other thing really quick. Some of these gyms have exceptionally long prompts. They're
pretty big. They're not like, you know, two sentence prompts. They're like two page prompts. They're pretty big
page prompts. They're pretty big prompts. So, sometimes I have found that
prompts. So, sometimes I have found that the fast version of Gemini doesn't always follow the the directions perfectly. It might miss something in
perfectly. It might miss something in there if it's a highly sophisticated prompt. So, if you're using this,
prompt. So, if you're using this, totally fine to leave it on fast. That's
completely fine. But if you ever notice that, you know, huh, I don't think it's really understanding the nuance of of what I'm saying, you can always pop up the model
of Gemini from fast to to thinking or even from thinking to pro. I don't know that that's typically necessary. I think
thinking is probably going to be as high as you typically would need to go. The
only reason I would go up to pro is if you're doing a gym that specifically involves math or coding. If it's a math gym, like I got some ACT math gyms,
yeah, I would go to Pro for that because that understands math much better. But
thinking is probably going to cover almost everything you need. Now, heads
up, when you're using an education account, you have absolutely free access to all three of these modes, but there are limits on thinking and pro. So fast,
there is no limit. You can use this all day long. It's unlimited. you're going
day long. It's unlimited. you're going
to get great responses really quick. If
you think you need a little bit more of a sophisticated response and you pop up to thinking, heads up. As of today, uh Google says that the current cap on that
is 300 prompts per day uh with thinking. Now,
that's a lot. That's a lot of prompts.
So, if you have 300 prompts a day, you're probably going to be fine. But
just be aware there is a cap. You can
hit that cap. and pro the current limit is 100 prompts a day. So just be aware those do have some limits. So you know you use them as as appropriate. Um I'm
going to go ahead and put mine on thinking probably for a lot of my examples here today because I think with the size of these prompts it does tend to give me a little bit of a better response. But that's it. At that point
response. But that's it. At that point we would now have the conversation. So
that's the idea. Now I'm going to encourage you guys pick a gym. Pick any
gym that you want to talk to. Give a
click on it. try it out and then when you get a moment, maybe drop in the chat which gym you tried out and how it went.
I would love to see in the chat who's been using which gyms and how they went.
I will do one of these really quick as an example, but let me give you the quick overview of the site and you don't have to wait for me. Go ahead and start clicking. Pick anything you want to
clicking. Pick anything you want to click on and try it out. But at the very top, you'll always see my newest gyms. So, I try to put about 18 of the newest gyms at the top. That way if you come
back a month from now, you can always check and see what's new at the top. But
then as you scroll down here, you'll get into your categories. So there's gems for lesson planning and curriculum design. There's that 5e lesson plan.
design. There's that 5e lesson plan.
Here's one for accelerated learning for enriching students. Bell ringer by date.
enriching students. Bell ringer by date.
I love that one. That's a great one.
Choice board creator, lesson hooks, station rotation, standard unpacker.
Love it. Lots of great stuff there.
Under instructional materials and content, we've got things like uh um a slideshow maker. We've got a story
slideshow maker. We've got a story writer, guided notes, song lyrics, informationational text, decodable texts, lots of great things under engagement in games. Oh, I love this
section. I actually do an entire
section. I actually do an entire training just on this section called um AI games uh activities and interactives or something like that where we get into
all of these ways we can use AI for class classroom games like 20 questions, AI interviews, AI debates, choose your own adventure stories, uh all kinds of
great stuff. That's a wonderful section.
great stuff. That's a wonderful section.
Um here's one specifically for support.
Uh, so we've got things like accommodation suggestions, learner scaffolds, differentiation strategies, uh, choice boards, vocabulary tiers, um,
guided notes, um, IEP smart goals, on and on. Loads of great stuff there.
and on. Loads of great stuff there.
Next, there's a section on assessment data and grading. You can have it generate DOK level questions or analyze your quizzes or tests to see what levels
of DOK they have. There's a grading partner where you upload the students work and it helps you grade it and get feedback and such. Here's an exit ticket generator. Oh, and here's one for
generator. Oh, and here's one for students, a student assignment feedback.
The students can upload the rubric, the assignment, their work, and then get feedback on their work. It will not do the work for them. It just gives them feedback and helps them see areas they
could improve. And here are some of the
could improve. And here are some of the ACT ones, too. Then there's just on and on. literacy, reading, writing,
on. literacy, reading, writing, language, math, science, STEM, a bunch of studentf facing tools. If you have turned on Gemini for your students,
which remember it is available K12, your school has to turn it on though, Gemini is not on by default for your students.
You do need to uh turn that on for them, but if you do, all of these are ready to go. You can have your students do a full
go. You can have your students do a full KWL interactive. I love that gym. Here's
KWL interactive. I love that gym. Here's
an AI tutor for them. Here's that a student assignment feedback. Uh here's
student brainstorming. We've got a career explorer, a job interview coach.
We've got uh a story co-writer. Uh
there's just so many here. So many great ones for students. And finally, some professional tasks. Things like, you
professional tasks. Things like, you know, sub plans, letters of wreck, professional learning coach, and more.
So, lots and lots and lots of great things. All right. With all of that
things. All right. With all of that said, I will demonstrate one of these.
I'm gonna actually do I'm gonna do the grading partner really quick. Let's do
that one. So, I'm going to do the grading partner. I'll just show you
grading partner. I'll just show you really fast what a gym looks like when you actually use it here. So, I'll go go ahead and give a click on the grading partner. This one again, the idea is
partner. This one again, the idea is you're going to upload like the assignment, the rubric, the student work. It's going to generate a report
work. It's going to generate a report giving you a suggested grade, suggested feedback, but it'll also give you suggested interventions to help support
that student. So, let's try it out. So,
that student. So, let's try it out. So,
I'll click on use the gym. That's going
to pop open. I will switch into thinking mode just so that it can think a little deeper on it. I'll say hi to it. And the
gym is now running. So, let's get the gym going. Here we go. Gym's cranking
gym going. Here we go. Gym's cranking
along. So, it says to get started, I need the subject and I need the grade level. So, let's say for this one um I'm
level. So, let's say for this one um I'm going to do uh grade eight uh English language arts. And then it needs uh the
language arts. And then it needs uh the assignment, the rubric, and the students work. Now, I'm actually going to just
work. Now, I'm actually going to just upload them. So, I already have these uh
upload them. So, I already have these uh they're not real, so don't worry. We're
not looking at real student work here.
I'm going to say assignment, rubric, and student work attached. Um so, I have, for example, here is an assignment. So,
a pretend assignment on writing a persuasive essay. Here is my rubric for
persuasive essay. Here is my rubric for grading that essay. And here is a pretend um essay from a student. So,
again, not not real content, just examples that I'm going to be using for this particular one here. And uh let me see if I can find I'm just going to drag and drop them into here. Uh I know you can't see it's from a different screen,
but let me drag and drop. There we go.
Perfect. Okay, so I just attached those as PDFs. Now, how would you normally
as PDFs. Now, how would you normally attach things to a gym? where you can hit the plus button and you can upload files and that can include pretty much anything you want to upload. You can
upload PDFs, you can upload word documents or spreadsheets, you can upload images, you can upload audio and video files. Yes, on the free version up
video files. Yes, on the free version up to five minutes of video and 10 minutes of audio. So, you can upload all kinds
of audio. So, you can upload all kinds of stuff. You can also just add straight
of stuff. You can also just add straight from your drive. You can just grab things right from your Google Drive, you know. So, I could have, you know,
know. So, I could have, you know, grabbed these straight from my drive if I'd wanted to. Documents, slideshows,
spreadsheets, whatever. You can upload up to 10 files per conversation. I'm
only doing three in this example, but you could do up to 10. All right, so there we go. I'll go ahead and submit that in there and let's see what it does. It's now going to think through
does. It's now going to think through that and the gym's going to come back and probably ask me some more questions.
Got it. Okay, so that's great. Is there
anything else you would like to provide?
Do you have any exemplar work? Would you
like to show me what you think excellent or fair is? Do you have any example feedback? Would you like to upload a
feedback? Would you like to upload a document with your uh feedback so I can mimic your style? Do you have any specific information on that student?
You know, are they an English language learner? Actually, let's this one is
learner? Actually, let's this one is this example. Um I had it be an English
this example. Um I had it be an English language learner. So, I can say yes,
language learner. So, I can say yes, this student is an English language learner. Their first language is
learner. Their first language is Spanish. One thing you're going to
Spanish. One thing you're going to notice with all of the gyms that I create, they are very conversational.
They're not meant to be just a click it and you're done kind of thing. It's
going to go back and forth. It's going
to ask you multiple follow-up questions.
Why do I do that? Because I think it is critical to have the human in the loop.
This is not about AI taking your place.
It's about AI assisting you. AI is not here to do your job. AI is here to help you do your job better. So, it's about AI being your assistant, not your replacement. It is going to ask you
replacement. It is going to ask you loads of questions to make sure that it understands exactly what you are looking for. All right, with that said, I think
for. All right, with that said, I think that should be it. I think that probably will now be all this particular gym needs. And let's see what it does. So,
needs. And let's see what it does. So,
it's reading the student's essay. It's
reading the um rubric. It's reading the assignment. It knows they're an English
assignment. It knows they're an English language learner. It knows all of that.
language learner. It knows all of that.
So, there we go. And so, what it did is it came up with the overall grade, a 2.3 out of four. And then for every criteria in my rubric, it told me how they did on
each criteria with evidence for why they were suggesting that particular um grade. And then here's a section where
grade. And then here's a section where it has feedback that I could give to the student. So written to the student how
student. So written to the student how you did, how you did on each of the criteria, what you did well, the glows, what you need to work on, the grows, and then
next steps, practical steps for the students to work on. And then for the teacher, suggestions for ways I could intervene to help that student specifically based upon their needs. At
that point, hey, do you want to do anything more? Do you want to upload
anything more? Do you want to upload another student? And you can keep on
another student? And you can keep on going. So there you go. So that is kind
going. So there you go. So that is kind of the whole whole cycle. That's what it looks like,
whole cycle. That's what it looks like, you know, from start to finish uh when you talk to a gym. And of course, you can always keep going and going further after that. So, with all of that said,
after that. So, with all of that said, hopefully that gives you a pretty good feel for what gyms are, what they can do, a little variety there, a little idea of what they can do. We're going to
now switch into making gems. Now, I'm going to take a quick look at the chat.
Looks like we got a lot of people throwing some great things in there. Um,
somebody's mentioning about doing the storybook gym, the professional learning coach. Uh, that's great. Somebody had
coach. Uh, that's great. Somebody had
just done the professional learning coach this morning. I'm glad uh to hear that. Um, Scott says he's using the AI
that. Um, Scott says he's using the AI tutor gym. That's fantastic. Glad to
tutor gym. That's fantastic. Glad to
hear that. Wonderful. Love it. Love it.
Love it. All right. Well, thank you guys for sharing all of that and please continue to do so throughout the session in the chat. All right. With that said, let's get into making some gems. So, now
that we know what they are, how do we create our own gyms? Now, keep in mind, you are absolutely welcome to use any of these gyms. That's what they are there for. So, if there's a gym that already
for. So, if there's a gym that already does what you want, have at it. That's
what they're there for. And I add new ones every week. So, it's constantly growing. But, let's empower you to make
growing. But, let's empower you to make your own gyms. So, to do that, we're going to go back over to Gemini. So,
here we are back in Gemini and I'll just start from scratch. You can kind of see it from scratch. So, from Gemini, once again, we're going to go to our gym manager. Remember to do that, that means
manager. Remember to do that, that means we click on the lefthand panel and we go down and we click on gyms. And that brings us to our gym manager. From
there, we're going to click on the new gym button there. So, let's do that.
Let's click on the new gym button. And
I'm going to zoom out a little bit. I'm
a little zoomed in at the moment, so it may be hard to see all of that. So, I'll
zoom out a bit. This is what pops up when you click on new gym. So, what is this? This is basically where you're
this? This is basically where you're going to build the gym. It's very
straightforward. There are five main sections. Only two are required. You do
sections. Only two are required. You do
have to put in a name for the gym. You
have to actually give it a name and you do need to give it the instructions.
That is the prompt. The instructions are the prompt you're giving it. Optionally,
you can give it a description.
Optionally, you can pick a tool that you want it to use. And optionally, you can upload files to serve as knowledge files. Up to 10 files that it can draw
files. Up to 10 files that it can draw from. So, let's try it out. I'm going to
from. So, let's try it out. I'm going to go ahead and for my example here, I'm going to pretend that I'm a science teacher and I want to do a science experiment generator. So, that's the
experiment generator. So, that's the name of my gym. I'm making a science experiment generator. And then for the
experiment generator. And then for the actual prompt, um, I pre-typed this, but there you go. This is basically what I'm putting in for my prompt. You are an excellent science educator skilled at
making learning engaging and relevant for students. Ask me for a grade level
for students. Ask me for a grade level and a topic or standard. Then generate a science experiment that is creative, schools safe, addresses the topic or standard, is appropriate for the grade
level, and aligns to the attached standards. Ah, let's talk about that.
standards. Ah, let's talk about that.
Now, you don't have to do this, but for this example, I'm just showing how this would work. Yes. down here in the
would work. Yes. down here in the knowledge section. That's where you can
knowledge section. That's where you can click the little plus button and you can add content to this. So, I'm going to upload a file here. Uh, let me see if I
can find where I put my file. Hold on a second. I know it's off on the other
second. I know it's off on the other screen here, but let me look and see if I can find it here. Dig into my science folder. There it is. I found it. And
folder. There it is. I found it. And
there it goes. I'm uploading my Ohio science standards. So again, you can
science standards. So again, you can upload up to 10 files or grab files from your drive, whatever the case might be.
Um, and then it'll have reference to those files. Now, one cool thing, if you
those files. Now, one cool thing, if you upload files from your Google Drive, they are live links to the gym. So if
you later change the document that you've added to it, the gym automatically pulls in the newest version every time it runs. So you don't have to worry about like reyncing it
later. it'll automatically pull in the
later. it'll automatically pull in the most recent version every time that you run the gem. And that's pretty much it.
That's pretty much the idea at that point. I've got my name of it in there.
point. I've got my name of it in there.
I've got my instructions and I've got my file attached to it. Now, the the tool I'm not doing that for this one. This is
where you can say I want you to use a specific tool. Like if this was to
specific tool. Like if this was to generate an image. If I was creating a gym that made an infographic or some sort of an image, I would choose create image. Some of my gyms do that. For
image. Some of my gyms do that. For
example, in the eduge gyms here, uh, this one here that makes the bell ringer, that creates an image. The one
that does the coloring page, that creates an image. So, I've got several that do that kind of thing. So, that's
what that's for if you needed to choose that if that if if that was necessary.
Or the canvas tool. That's what I do for like my slideshow maker gems because you make slideshows inside of Canvas. So,
you can pick a tool if you need it. But
that's pretty much it. At that point, I just hit save and I've got my gym saved.
Now, I will mention one other thing before I do that, though. If you're a little intimidated by the prompt, like, you know, Eric, that's great, but I just don't feel like I'm the best prompter in
the world. You know, my prompts are
the world. You know, my prompts are okay, but they're not amazing. Well,
first of all, they're probably way better than you think. AI will do a perfectly fine job even with a basic prompt. You don't have to stress out
prompt. You don't have to stress out about that. But be aware when you are
about that. But be aware when you are putting your prompt in, look right below there and there's a pencil with a little sparkle next to it. That is the uh anytime you see a sparkle, that means
it's AI. And so this is to use Gemini to
it's AI. And so this is to use Gemini to help you to improve your prompts. So if
you put even just the basic instructions in and then hit the little sparkly pencil, it's going to read through your prompt and it's going to jazz it up a little bit. It's going to make a better
little bit. It's going to make a better version of that. And there you go. Look
at that. Look how nice that is now. A
much more detailed, fleshed out prompt.
And there you go. You're in good shape.
Hit save and you got it. That's it. You
have made a gym. So, at that point, here's the idea. That gym is now always going to be in my gym manager. So, in
the future, when I go to my lefthand panel and I go to my gyms link and I pull up my gym manager, there it is.
science experiment generator sitting right there. So, as soon as you have
right there. So, as soon as you have created a gym and saved it, it now shows up under my gyms. What you can do at this point is go ahead and just click on that gym and it runs. And that really is
it. I mean, it really is as simple as
it. I mean, it really is as simple as that. I come in here, I say hi to it
that. I come in here, I say hi to it just like normal. And that's it. The gym
runs just like any gym would run. Hey,
I'm your science experiment educator.
You know, what's the grade level? What's
the topic? I won't actually run the gym.
you. But you get the idea and that's it.
I would now have a conversation with the gym just like normal. Okay, so that's the basic idea behind creating a gym. Uh
like I said, you fill in those few things after you've done that. Uh you
can always preview it, by the way. You
can test it before you save it, but I usually just save it and test it afterwards. But you can technically test
afterwards. But you can technically test it in there as well. And then yeah, that's it. When it's done, it is now
that's it. When it's done, it is now saved in your my gyms section. So, you
can get back to this anytime you want.
Now, what I'd like to spend a little more time on is how to make a really good prompt because obviously the prompt is going to make a big difference. And
yes, we already saw the little sparkly button. We talked about that. So, we
button. We talked about that. So, we
already know that that you can hit the little sparkly pencil and that helps.
But I want to give you guys just a couple more ideas on how you could, um, uh, be able to flesh out a prompt. And
so, um, here are some thoughts when it comes to, um, creating your prompts here. And again, all of this, everything
here. And again, all of this, everything I'm mentioning, it's all in our agenda.
I just want to mention that again because I know some folks may have come in and come out. Don't forget
bit.ly/kurtz-jims.
I'll drop that back into the uh, chat if you need to see that. That's our agenda document. We've gone through the
document. We've gone through the overview of gyms. We've talked about sample gyms. We talked about creating them. Now, we're down on page four
them. Now, we're down on page four getting into creating a prompt. So,
everything's here. You can get to all of this inside of that document. So, what
else could you do if you're trying to make the best prompt possible? Okay.
Well, in addition to the sparkly pencil, other things to think about is you can model after other gems. So, every gym that I have created, every single gym I
have made, my prompts are not hidden.
They're all completely public. You can
access all of them. I actually have a link to them that's in the document.
It's also right here, bit.ly/jim-prompts.
bit.ly/jim-prompts.
That is going to take you to a Google document where when you go to that Google document and start scrolling down, you're going to find all 109 of my
gym prompts. You are absolutely welcome
gym prompts. You are absolutely welcome to learn from these, copy them, modify them, pattern off of them. There's 234
pages of gem prompts here because it's 109 109 gems. So all of that and so again, that link uh is in the agenda,
but I'll drop it right here into the chat as well if that's easier. So that's
an option for you. You can absolutely just pull up that document and learn from those gyms. But let me give you another idea. Let me give you another
another idea. Let me give you another option. If you are trying to make a
option. If you are trying to make a really, really, really good gym and you're like, Eric, I just I don't know.
I'm not sure what's the best practice.
Honestly, this is one of the easiest things you can do that's going to work really well. So, turns out I have
really well. So, turns out I have created a gym that makes gyms. So, one of my gyms on the edguge gym site is the
eduge gym generator. And so, if you go back over to Eduge Gyms and you scroll all the way down to the last section called professional tasks and admin,
right there is the edge gym generator.
So, what is this? Well, basically this is a gym that has been fed all 100 plus gyms that I've created. It has all the
prompts. So it knows best practices. It
prompts. So it knows best practices. It
knows how gyms should flow for an educational use. You can come here and
educational use. You can come here and you can simply say, "Hey, I want to make a a gym." Come here, click on use the gym. And here we go. It's going to pop
gym. And here we go. It's going to pop open here. I'll zoom in a little bit so
open here. I'll zoom in a little bit so you can see that better. I'm going to switch to thinking mode. I'm going to say hi to it. And basically it's going
to run and it's going to walk me through the process of creating my own gym. Yes.
Somebody said gymception. Yes. Yes.
Exactly. Yes. It's a gym that makes gyms. It's a gym that looks at gyms and makes gyms. It's that is exactly what it is. Hey, I'm the gym architect. I'm here
is. Hey, I'm the gym architect. I'm here
to help you build the perfect system instructions. What's the title of your
instructions. What's the title of your gym and what's its purpose? So let's say for my gym I have decided that I for my example here today I want to make a gym
about the raft writing prompt uh process if you're familiar with that basically raft is a um a framework that stands for role audience format and topic and it's
a way to help students write more creatively because it gives them basically uh examples of you know I want you to have this role for this audience in this format on this topic and I want
you to write something based on that.
Well, what if we said we wanted a raft writing prompt generator to help support teachers? So, a teacher would be able to
teachers? So, a teacher would be able to generate a whole bunch of these raft prompts to use with their students. So,
basically, I just tell it this is the name of my gym and this is what I want it to do. At that point, it's going to think about that and then it's going to go back and forth and back and forth and it's going to, you know, ask me
questions. Oh, I did see Michelle
questions. Oh, I did see Michelle saying, "Do you usually switch to thinking when making a gym?" Michelle,
yeah, in general, I do use thinking for most of my gyms just because they're so big. I find that it does a little better
big. I find that it does a little better job, but honestly, start with fast. If
fast works for you, you're totally fine.
I do tend to find myself switching up into thinking, and you can switch even halfway through. You can change at any
halfway through. You can change at any point that that you need to do that. All
right, so at this point, here we go.
Hey, um, so that's great. Uh, so we're doing the raft thing. That's great. Um,
who should the AI be when it's interacting with the user? Should it be a creative writing coach, an expert curriculum designer, a witty brainstorming partner? You know, what
brainstorming partner? You know, what tone should it be? You know, well, I think, you know, an expert curriculum designer sounds good because we're trying to create um some Well, actually, you know, no, I like the brainstorming
partner. Let's have it be a witty
partner. Let's have it be a witty brainstorming partner because we do want creative prompts. But again, I could
creative prompts. But again, I could also just type in whatever persona I want, but it's basically asking me how should the gym behave? What should its persona be? I could put in anything I
persona be? I could put in anything I want. Love it. That's great. Who is the
want. Love it. That's great. Who is the primary audience for this? Is it
teachers who are going to be planning or students? I mean, it could be either.
students? I mean, it could be either.
I'll just say teachers to use while planning. And again, I'm doing this
planning. And again, I'm doing this really fast. Normally, I would think
really fast. Normally, I would think this through a lot more thoroughly. I
probably would probably want to do a gym that actually is dualpurpose that students could use it to generate their own prompts, too. But just really quick, just to show you, I'll just say, "Hey, let's have it be for teachers." That's
great. So, when the teacher uses this gym, what should they be inputting? What
should they be giving them? I would say probably something like uh the target grade level, the subject or topic that's being studied and then optionally any learning objectives they're trying to
address and probably any interest the students have that they might want to weave in. So, you know, I might say
weave in. So, you know, I might say let's let's have that be the input. And
then is there anything else? Let's see.
This is it may ask me it may ask me about the output. That would I would would not be surprised. Yes, there we go. So, once it does that, what should
go. So, once it does that, what should it output? like a table uh with all of
it output? like a table uh with all of these different um writing prompts. And
I think that does make sense. Um I would say something like that. Let's go with that. I'm just going to actually copy
that. I'm just going to actually copy and paste this. Uh let's do this. I've
already re I've typed up a few of these things ahead of time just to save myself time hoping that that's what it would ask me. I'll say the gym should output a
ask me. I'll say the gym should output a table with four columns and it should provide four to five highly creative, engaging, and sometimes quirky combinations. based on the teacher's
combinations. based on the teacher's topic.
That might be it. Now, typically my gyms always finish with a question that says, "Is there anything else I should know?"
And yep, there it is. Before I do the draft, is there anything else I should know? Would you like me to do anything
know? Would you like me to do anything else? And I will just say maybe, you
else? And I will just say maybe, you know, hey, after it makes the table, it should ask the teacher if they want to generate more examples. And that's it.
So, there you go. Basically, at this point, I've told it everything I want in my perfect gym, and it's gonna make it.
It's gonna write the prompt. It's going
to generate the gym for me. So, we'll
we'll let it do its thing. Um, and once it's done, we'll copy it and paste it and show you how you could then uh implement that gym. So, here we go. Here
are your system instructions. And there
they are. Now, it's going to look a little funny when you look at it. Eric,
what are all of these asterisks and pound symbols? This is what's called
pound symbols? This is what's called markdown formatting. It is just the
markdown formatting. It is just the particular formatting that works well with gems. You don't have to use it. I
do use it though because it it's it kind of shows like bullet points and things that are bold and stuff like that. But
folks, that's it. That's the prompt. So,
what do I do? I click the little copy button here to copy the prompt. And then
I go over to Gemini.
And then I go to my gym manager. And
then I click on new gym. And then I paste in the prompt.
And I paste in the title.
And done. We have created a raft writing prompt generator. I can now save that.
prompt generator. I can now save that.
And it's ready to go. I can start testing it out. I can pop over here, say hi to it, and take it for a spin and test it out. Hey, I'm your raft writing
prompt generator. What grade level is
prompt generator. What grade level is this for? What's the subject or topic?
this for? What's the subject or topic?
You know, uh what learning standards are we trying to meet? You get the idea.
It's ready to rock and roll. Then, now
I'm going to tell you really quick, when I do create gyms, I do use this tool a lot. Now, this actually is a tool I
lot. Now, this actually is a tool I leverage to help me create gyms. But having said that, I do a lot of tweaking and editing and testing and things like
that, which is exactly what I would recommend you do. Whatever it gives you here, copy it, paste it, try it out, pretend you're a student, pretend you're
a teacher, try it on fast, try it on thinking, see how it works, and then go back to your gym that helped you create it. Come right back over here and say,
it. Come right back over here and say, "Hey, I tested it out. it worked great except could we change this or what about that and then it will rewrite the
prompt for you or sometimes it suggests things like hey would you like me to add some other things you know so you just keep going back and forth you test it you come back you talk some more you you
take the new version you paste the new version in you test it again you know you go back and forth back and forth back and forth and you keep having that conversation until you're thrilled
filled with the final product that you have created. All right. So anyway,
have created. All right. So anyway,
those would be some things I would suggest as far as some tips for creating gems. Uh feel free to use the sparkly pencil. Feel free to copy my gyms. Feel
pencil. Feel free to copy my gyms. Feel free to use my edguy generator. Okay, at
this point we need to talk about sharing gems because we've created hopefully some really amazing things that you're going to want to share with others. So
we want to talk really quickly about how that works. So here's the idea. Once you
that works. So here's the idea. Once you
have created a gym, you can give it to other people so they can use it. It's
super simple. It functions very much like sharing a document. It's very much the same idea. So what we're going to do is we're going to go back to our gym manager and we're going to find the gym
that we want to share and we're just going to click on the share button. When
we do that, we're going to be able to share it just like a document. You can
type in people's emails to share it.
Type in their groups to share it. Or you
can go down to general access and say I want to share it with everybody in my school or anybody on the internet who has the link. You can just copy that
link. Then give it to either your school
link. Then give it to either your school or give it to people on the internet and then anybody is able to use that. So, if
I came back over here and I clicked on my gym manager and I came back over to tell you what, I'm going to use my science experiment one from earlier. And
I'll show you why in a second. If I go back to my science experiment one here that I did earlier and I say I want to share this. Let's do that. Let's share
share this. Let's do that. Let's share
my science experiment generator real quick. There we go. So, again, I could
quick. There we go. So, again, I could put in people's email addresses. For
this one, I'm just going to come down here and say I want to share it with anybody on the internet. Now this option above that would be your school district. That would be for sharing
district. That would be for sharing within your domain. This would be sharing with anybody online. And that's
it. Once I do that, I can hit copy link.
And that that's the link. That's the
link I give to people. And anybody who clicks that link can use the gym. Real
quick though, do you remember I did something special about the science one?
When I created it, what did I do? I
attached a PDF to it. If you attach reference files, as soon as you hit done, it's going to yell at me and say, "Oh, hey, heads up, Eric. You attach the science standards, you got to share
those, too." So, if you've attached
those, too." So, if you've attached reference files, you also have to give view rights to those files when you share the gym or people can't use the
gym. Which means, folks, don't forget,
gym. Which means, folks, don't forget, anything you attach to a gym has to be shared also. So don't attach things that
shared also. So don't attach things that shouldn't be viewed by other people because they can view them. If they make a copy of the gym, they can see all the files you've attached. So only attach
things that are okay to be viewed by anybody if you're sharing that gym out more broadly. All right. So that's the
more broadly. All right. So that's the idea of sharing a gym, which folks, that's all these are. When you go to my eduge gyms website, when it says use the gym, that's all that is. That's the
link. That is the sharable link. That's
how we did that. Okay. Now, having said that, I do need to give you a couple of qualifications. Please do note if you're
qualifications. Please do note if you're in a school district, which I imagine you are, districts can control how gyms are shared. It is always possible that
are shared. It is always possible that your school has turned off the ability to share gyms. So, if something doesn't work, please talk to your tech people.
They can turn off gym sharing. They can
also limit it because it follows the sharing of Drive. If you can't share Drive files outside of your domain, then you can't share gyms outside of your domain. Your tech folks need to make
domain. Your tech folks need to make those adjustments. So, please talk to
those adjustments. So, please talk to them if that's the case. Another thing I want to make really clear real quick is that you can also share gyms directly with your students. If you use Google
Classroom by attaching them inside of Classroom, you can just use the link like we did. Perfectly fine. You can
come to your your your gyms here and you can hit the little share button. You can
copy the the share link and you can drop that anywhere. You can drop that into
that anywhere. You can drop that into classroom or schooly or canvas or desire to learn or mood or whatever. But if
you're in Google Classroom, you can also just click the gym button right there in classroom when you're doing assignments or materials and you can just pick any
gym you want. That's another way to share them easily with your students.
Now, having said that, if you share them with students, I want to be really clear about this because sometimes people use tools like School AI or Magic School or Brisk, which I love. I think they're
phenomenal tools. And what they're used
phenomenal tools. And what they're used to is I create an activity for my students, I share it with my students, and then I monitor my students. So, like
in school AI or Magic School or Brisk, you can go in and see the conversation.
I need you to know very clearly at the moment today Gemini does not have a feature that allows you to easily look at your students conversations. Google
has said uh back at the BET conference in in January that they are working on that. They are working on adding some
that. They are working on adding some features to be able to monitor student use more efficiently. So, as of as it is right now today, yes, everything this
the kids type in, it is being recorded, but you're not going to be able to get to it easily. It's going into something called Google Vault. And Google Vault is probably something that only a few people in your school can access. And
so, it's not something you can easily get to. So, here's what my current
get to. So, here's what my current recommendation is. If you are sharing
recommendation is. If you are sharing gyms with students, have them use the gym and have the final step of the activity be that they are required to
click on the share button at the top of their conversation and they are required to give you the link to their conversation. So, if I go back to any of
conversation. So, if I go back to any of my gyms we've been talking to, it's like here's this gym that I was talking to.
any gym you're talking to. Well, anytime
you're talking to Gemini, in the very top right hand corner, there's a share conversation button. The students should
conversation button. The students should click that and then they should copy the link and once the link is copied, they turn that link into you, you can click
the link and you can read the entire conversation. So, be aware at the moment
conversation. So, be aware at the moment that's the easiest way for you to be able to monitor what the students are doing. Yes, this is something that has
doing. Yes, this is something that has to be turned on as well. So, if you're like, "Oh, my kids don't have the share button." Well, go to the admin console,
button." Well, go to the admin console, or you don't, but have your tech folks go to the admin console and turn that on. Okay, last thing that I'm absolutely
on. Okay, last thing that I'm absolutely going to cover. I know we're getting really close to end of our time. I
apologize. We may go over by about five minutes, but this is really helpful. I
think this is really important. In
addition to sharing gyms, I really want to talk really quick about copying gyms as well. So, here's the thing. When you
as well. So, here's the thing. When you
share a gym, people are allowed to make copies of it. And there are two ways they can do this. Now, this is really helpful. Remember at the very start,
helpful. Remember at the very start, what did I say? I said, I want you guys to build your own collections. I want
you to make your own treasure chests full of gems, which means you should create gems, but also copy gems. Copy gems that others have made. Edit them,
modify them, because once you make a copy, you can make changes to your copy of it. So, for example, on my edgy site,
of it. So, for example, on my edgy site, below every single gym where it says use the gym, look what it says. Make your
own copy. Every single gym I have here, if you say, "Oh, Eric, I love this particular gym for accelerated learning." Well, I'm so glad you do.
learning." Well, I'm so glad you do.
Click right here, make a copy, and guess what? It copies the gym. It copies the
what? It copies the gym. It copies the entire gym. You just hit save. And guess
entire gym. You just hit save. And guess
what? You've got it. It's now inside of your my gyms list. It's your copy and you can modify it any way that you want.
So, how does that work? Well, there's
two ways to make copies of gyms. One is completely on the end of the end user.
It's up to them. So, here's one way to make a copy. If somebody uses a shared gym, anytime you use any shared gym
whatsoever, when you use a gym, it shows up automatically under the shared with me section. So, if I go back to Gemini
me section. So, if I go back to Gemini and I come to my gym manager here and I scroll Oh, here we go again, guys. I apologize. I
got to scroll so far down. I scroll so far. That's the problem. I made too many
far. That's the problem. I made too many gyms. I made way too There's probably a keyboard shortcut that would take me to the bottom of the page. There it is.
Okay. If you first of all, you go out and you use a shared gym. As soon as you do that, come back to your gym manager, scroll to the very bottom, and under
shared with me, it's going to show up there. Once you see it there, click the
there. Once you see it there, click the three dots button and hit make a copy.
That's it. So, use a gym and then you can copy it. Any gym you use, you're allowed to make a copy of. That's one
way to do it. As soon as you do that, it's going to show up now up here in your my gym section. There's a second way to do this though, and that's what I have done. So, on my website, you don't
have done. So, on my website, you don't have to do that. You don't have to use the gym, then scroll down, then make a copy. I added a link that literally says
copy. I added a link that literally says make a copy. How did I do that? Real
simple. What you do is you go into your edit screen for your gym. So, first of all, you create a gym and then you go into the edit screen. So, I come here and I pick any one of these gyms. Does
not matter what gym. I could pick any one of these. You know, here's my gym on lesson hooks. So, you go into the edit
lesson hooks. So, you go into the edit screen for your gym. So, you're
pretending that you're editing your gym and from the edit screen, copy that link at the top of the page. Copy the address
for your gym from the edit screen and then just change the word edit to the word copy. That's it. That's all it is.
word copy. That's it. That's all it is.
At that point, that new link, that's what I put here. That is what forces the copy. So, that's another way to do it.
copy. So, that's another way to do it.
Oh my gosh, we made it. Okay, that was only three minutes over. So, let's do this. We're getting obviously we've gone
this. We're getting obviously we've gone over by just a bit. I apologize. I
apologize. But with that said, let's do this. So, I'm going to pop back up on
this. So, I'm going to pop back up on the screen real quick. Hi, I'm still here. So, as we start to wrap up, what
here. So, as we start to wrap up, what I'm going to do is I'm going to look really quick to see if there's some questions. Now, if you need to go, I
questions. Now, if you need to go, I totally understand. No worries. I will
totally understand. No worries. I will
say real quick, I am going to give certificates of attendance for this session. I should have said that up
session. I should have said that up front, but you'll get an email anyway.
So, uh, everybody who registered, everybody who registered for the session, you will be getting a follow-up email that has a link where you can get a certificate of attendance. So, I
apologize. I should have said that at the very beginning uh because I know that's a common question. So, that will be coming to you. Um but in in the meantime, in the meantime, um let's see if there's any questions. So, if you if
you've got to go, hey, don't worry about it. Take off. I totally understand it.
it. Take off. I totally understand it.
But I want to take a quick look into our Q&A doc and see if there's some things I missed. I also want to look really quick
missed. I also want to look really quick into the um into the sharing or into the uh YouTube chat. And I also want to peek and see if people have been submitting any gems. Ah, we did get some already.
That's fantastic. Look at that. So,
remember I said you guys could um and let me pull our Q&A over here. Remember
from our Q&A doc, you were able to submit any gyms that you wanted. Looks
like we are getting a couple over here.
I will uh do that. Okay. So, looks like we've got somebody has submitted a lesson plan generator, a differentiation
wizard, a uh a CER gym, a goalie, uh smart goal one. Love it. Thank you guys.
So, hey, please feel free to continue to submit any gyms that you have created.
Uh you can use that form to drop them in there. And then don't forget on my
there. And then don't forget on my Edugee site right here at the top it says, "Please submit your own gyms." And this is a different form. This is my
official form. So if you want if you
official form. So if you want if you want a gym to actually go on the website to be considered for inclusion, you can come here to this form. It's a little bit more involved. It asks for
permission and stuff like that because I want to make sure I've got, you know, the the rights to be able to to use your gym. Uh this allows you to submit gyms
gym. Uh this allows you to submit gyms to the site. I will evaluate them and see about including them on the site. So
I would love for you to do that. So,
thank you to those who have already dropped a few things in here, though.
Questionwise, did I miss anything here?
If my school has blocked Gemini, will gyms be available? No, it would not be.
You have to have Gemini open for gyms to work. Again, I think Gemini is a a
work. Again, I think Gemini is a a fantastic tool for schools to have turned on. Even if you use other tools,
turned on. Even if you use other tools, even if you're using Magic School and Brisk and School AI and diffid and all these other things, there's no reason not to use Gemini. It's free and it has
built-in data privacy protection. I
think you should be using it. Okay. Uh
what are my thoughts on copyright protections when it comes to uploading files to gyms? Uh that is something that I include in the uh uh on the website.
When you go to submit a gym to me, you'll see right there on the website it says permission. You need to have
says permission. You need to have permission to share this gym and any content contained within the gym. Either
you have created it yourself or you're submitting it for somebody else who has given you permission to do so. So yes,
absolutely you do need to make sure that if you're attaching something to a gym that you have the right to attach it.
Now, is it possible that you could be attaching something that isn't yours but it's still okay? I would say that's going to fall under educational fair use. You're going to have to investigate
use. You're going to have to investigate that yourself and decide does this file like for example if I attached the Ohio science standards like I did earlier I
would say that is completely educational fair use because that is a publicly available PDF that anybody can use the Ohio science standards and I am in no
way uh gaining anything from it. I'm not
selling the gym. the gym is free and I'm in no way harming the uh the the Ohio's, you know, Department of Education by putting that in. If nothing else, I'm encouraging the use of of their
standards. All right. When you create
standards. All right. When you create gyms, are you generating uh the follow-up questions ideas for the follow-up questions in the prompt? Um,
so when you create the gym, I typically, as you notice when I was making the gym there, I was telling it suggestions of things that I wanted it to ask the user,
even like when it's all done to to do.
So, so yes, I do include often things I would like I I kind of spell out everything that's critical for it to ask. Having said that, the gym will also
ask. Having said that, the gym will also flesh that out. It will continue the conversation. I don't have to script it
conversation. I don't have to script it out for infinity, just far enough to get to the very end of the process I want it to complete. And then the user can
to complete. And then the user can continue that conversation afterwards.
I've seen where it's good to ask at the end of your prompt, ask me questions one at a time until you have all the information you need for me to complete the task. Something like that. Would
the task. Something like that. Would
that be great? Um, yes. That is
typically in all of my prompts. If you
look in the prompt, that's pretty much in there. Yes, I do include that phrase
in there. Yes, I do include that phrase or some v variation of that. concerns
about hallucinations. Um, certainly
that's always a possible a possible thing if you're not familiar with hallucinations. Hallucinations are when
hallucinations. Hallucinations are when you ask an AI a question that it doesn't know the answer to and it wants to make you happy. So, it creates an answer when
you happy. So, it creates an answer when it doesn't really have one. Um, that is always a possibility. So, yes, that's just a reality of of AI tools. We always
have to verify and think critically about the responses we get. Speaking of
hallucinations though, um, heads up guys, um, a tool that helps address that is a tool called Notebook LM. And guess
what? In two weeks from now, I'm doing another webinar, another free webinar, uh, Tuesday, March 17th on Notebook LM, which is all about how do you get around problems like hallucinations and things
like that. This is a grounded AI tool
like that. This is a grounded AI tool from Google. So, you can go to uh, here
from Google. So, you can go to uh, here I'll give you the link. I'll drop it in the chat. Uh this is the uh post and of
the chat. Uh this is the uh post and of course you can get the uh the uh the registration there uh to sign up for that free webinar on notebook LM that
would assist with concerns related to um hallucinations. All right. Well, I think
hallucinations. All right. Well, I think we did it, guys. I think we got through all of that. I'm looking in the chat to see if there's anything else. I don't
see anything else, but tell you what, I may have missed something. It's very
possible. I'll do my best to go back through these things afterwards and see if I missed something. And if so, I'll do my best to fill in those responses.
But what I want to say right now is just thanks so much. Thanks for being here.
Uh remember that everything we looked at, you can get to all of this at bit.ly/kurtz-geems.
bit.ly/kurtz-geems. Remember at the very top of that document is all of my contact info. I
would encourage you to uh sign up for my newsletter, connect with me on socials, here's my PD catalog if you're looking for training for your school. Uh, lots
of ways to stay in touch there at the top of that document. And of course, Eduge gyms, spread the good word. Let
people know about it. Uh, use it. Uh,
feel free to train on it. That's what
it's there for. And submit your suggestions for gyms as well. Um, if
you've created a gym or if you just need a gym created, say, Eric, this would be a great one. Can we add something like this? So, with all of that said, one
this? So, with all of that said, one more time, guys, I just want to say thanks so much. I really appreciate whether you watched live or if you joined uh or if you watched the recording afterwards for taking the time
out of your day to be a part of this.
Looking forward to learning with you at the notebook LM webinar coming up in a couple of weeks and many many times to come in the future. Take care everybody.
Thank you so much for being here.
